HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall jumped all over Ohio early and coasted to an 83-69 victory Saturday evening at the Cam Henderson Center.
The Thundering Herd never trailed, built a 21-point halftime lead and led by as many as 27 points.
Andrew Taylor led five Marshall players in double figures with 19 points. Taevion Kinsey added 18 points with nine rebounds and five assists, and Obinna Anochili-Killen had 16 points and six rebounds.
Ohio’s success came inside, with Dwight Wilson tallying 16 points and six rebounds and Gabe Wiznitzer scoring a career-high 15 points in just 16 minutes.
Kinney hit a jumper on Marshall’s first possession, and it led the rest of the way. Ohio (4-4) trailed just 6-5 following an AJ Brown 3-pointer, but the Thundering Herd took (7-1) over with a 9-0 run to take the lead to double digits. A short time later, another 9-0 run pushed the advantage to 29-9 with 5:37 left in the first half, and Marshall led 43-22 at halftime.
The lead grew to as big as 55-28 on a Kamdyn Curfman 3-pointer early in the second half. A Wyatt Fricks 3-pointer made it 81-55 with 4:02 before Ohio closed on a 14-2 run to make the final score look closer than it really was.
Ohio shot just 30% in the first half but improved to 43.3% for the game. Marshall finished at 46.1%, but a big difference was the extra opportunities by the Herd through a 19-14 advantage in offensive rebounds and a 13-6 turnover differential.
Starting guards Jaylin Hunter, DeVon Baker and Miles Brown combined for just eight points on 3-of-19 shooting. In addition to Wiznitzer’s solid game, a bright spot for Ohio was AJ Brown’s 11 points in 23 minutes as his playing time continue to increase while coming back from an injury.
The Bobcats have more than a week off before facing Youngstown State on the road at 2 p.m. Dec. 11.
