TOLEDO – Ohio could not slow down hot-shooting Toledo and dropped a 90-75 decision Tuesday night at Savage Arena.
The Rockets (12-6, 3-2 Mid-American Conference) shot 55.6% overall, including 67.9% in the first half when they built a 52-31 lead. RayJ Dennis scored 25 points with nine rebounds, while JT Shumate added 21 points and six rebounds.
Freshman Elmore James had the best game of his career with 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting to lead the Bobcats (9-9, 1-4 MAC). Dwight Wilson posted another double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Toledo jumped out to a 13-0 lead to start the game without missing a field goal attempt. A short time later, a 7-0 run put the Rockets up 26-7, and the Bobcats did not closer than 13 the rest of the way.
A Shumate 3-pointer had Toledo doubled up 44-22, and a jumper by Dennis put the lead at 19 points at halftime. Toledo’s biggest lead was 63-37 on a pair of Ra’heim Moss free throws with 15:22 left to play.
Jaylin Hunter and Ben Roderick had 10 points each for Ohio.
While Elmore had a big game, fellow freshman AJ Brown continued his struggles in league play with just two points on 1-of-8 shooting. After scoring in double figures in the final seven nonconference games, he has done that just once against the MAC while shooting 10 of 44.
It also was a rough night for Miles Brown, who fouled out with just three points in 14 minutes.
Dante Maddox Jr. scored 14 points, with EJ Farmer adding 11 for the Rockets.
Ohio hosts Central Michigan at 2 p.m. Saturday at The Convo.
