ATHENS – Ohio snapped its two-game losing streak in a big way, blowing out Division III Defiance 108-28 on Monday night at The Convo, matching the largest margin of victory in school history.
The Bobcats also won by 80 points when they beat Marietta 105-25 in 1946.
All of the Bobcats’ starters played less than 20 minutes, and four of six players in double figures were off the bench. AJ Clayton did not miss a shot while scoring 17 points. Ike Cornish had 13 points. Returning from injury, Miles Brown had 12 points, which was matched by walk-ons Ben Estis and Quinn Corna. Aidan Hadaway finished with 11 points.
Ohio forced 28 turnovers while committing only nine and had a 50-20 rebounding advantage.
The Bobcats (6-4) scored the first 10 points of the game and had many similar runs. Up 16-5, Ohio scored 14 straight points for a 29-6 lead. Ten straight points later in the first half made it 45-11, and the Bobcats put up 11 in a row just before halftime when Defiance scored the final basket to make it 60-19.
As bad as the first half was for Defiance, the second half was perhaps worse. The Yellow Jackets (1-9) scored only nine points after the break. Ohio had its biggest run of 16 straight points to go up 84-23, and after giving up a 3-pointer, it scored 10 straight. The Bobcats scored the final 14 points, part of a larger 24-2 run to end the game.
Ohio shot 55.3%, which included 44.4% (16 of 36) on 3-pointers, while Defiance was just 11 of 44 (25%) on the game and shot 19.0% in the second half.
Defiance’s 28 points were the fewest scored in a game at The Convo. The previous record was 31 by Marietta in 1973. The Bobcats scored their most points since beating Akron 112-104 in four overtimes in 2003.
The Bobcats hit the road to face Austin Peay at 7 p.m. Friday.
