JONESBORO, Ark. – Ohio simply could not get stops against Arkansas State, which shot 63.8% and topped the Bobcats 100-87 in the second round of the MAC-Sun Belt Conference Challenge on Saturday at First National Bank Arena.

Arkansas State (11-4) went on a 15-0 first-half run to erase a nine-point deficit and controlled the game from there. Taryn Todd scored 20 points and added seven rebounds, with Derrian Ford adding 19 points for the Red Wolves.

Jaylin Hunter paced the Bobcats (13-11) with 20 points and eight assists. Ajay Sheldon knocked down five 3-pointers and scored 17 points.

Sheldon hit back-to-back 3-pointers, followed by one by Ike Cornish that gave Ohio a 27-18 lead midway through the first half, but Arkansas State followed with the next 15 in a row to go ahead 33-27. The Red Wolves also scored the final eight points of the half to extend their advantage to 51-39.

With 9:17 left in the game, the Red Wolves held an 82-59 lead before the Bobcats worked their way back in it but never really threatened. A Hunter 3-pointer made it 94-85 with 2:03 to go, but Ohio got no closer.

AJ Clayton scored 13 points with five rebounds, while Miles Brown scored 11 points and Aidan Hadaway 10 points for Ohio.

Seeing extended minutes because Shareef Mitchell sat out, Cornish scored eight points. Elmore James was forced into the most action he has seen since his injury, playing 33 minutes, but scored just three points on one shot attempt with one rebound and one turnover.

Izaiyah Nelson had 17 points, Dyon Dominquez scored 16 points, and Julian Lual had 11 points for Arkansas State.

Ohio shot the ball well at 51.6%, including 46.4% from long range, and made 10 of 11 free throws, but there was no stopping Arkansas State, which in addition to shooting well over 60% in both halves went 15 of 18 at the foul line.

The Bobcats had their season-best four-game winning streak snapped. They have extra time to prepare for the next game at 9 p.m. Friday at Toledo on ESPNU.
