TOLEDO – Dante Maddox Jr. hit a step-back go-ahead 3-pointer with 59 seconds left, and Toledo held off Ohio 85-83 to extend its regular season winning streak against the Bobcats to 11 straight Friday night at Savage Arena.
Once ahead by three, the Rockets (16-9, 10-2 Mid-American Conference) did not allow the Bobcats (13-12, 7-5 MAC) a chance at a game-tying 3-pointer. Aidan Hadaway made two free throws with 35 seconds left to make it a one-point game, and after two foul shots by Sonny Wilson with 28 seconds to go, Toledo fouled on purpose.
Jaylin Hunter made two from the line with 10 seconds left to return it to a one-point game. Andre Lorentsson put the margin back at three with eight seconds to play, and the Rockets then fouled AJ Clayton, who split at the line. Javan Simmons also made one of two a couple of seconds later, and it was 84-81.
Ajay Sheldon made a foul shot with over two seconds left and missed the second, but Toledo rebounded, and Ra’Heim was fouled. He made just the second of two foul shots to possibly give Ohio a shot. Again, the Rockets fouled. Shareef Mitchell connected at the line and then missed on purpose. Toledo rebounded and time ran out.
Clayton paced Ohio with 22 points and five rebounds, while Hunter scored 16 points with six assists and five rebounds. Miles Brown scored 12 points.
Maddox had 21 points for Toledo, which also got 16 points from Moss.
The Rockets quickly erased a 44-39 halftime deficit and led most of the second half, taking their biggest lead of 66-60 on a Tyler Cochran 3-pointer with nine minutes left.
With Ohio trailing 72-67, Clayton completed a four-point play, connecting from long range while fouled and then hitting the free throw, to make it a one-point game with 5:04 left. After a Maddox layup, Clayton connected from long range again to tie the score at 74 with three minutes to go.
Brown put the Bobcats on top 76-74 with two free throws at the 2:13 mark, but Maddox tied it with a jumper and then put the Rockets on top for good followed a missed 3-pointer by Brown.
Ohio roared out to a great start in the game with an early 15-4 lead on a Hadaway 3-pointer. Later in the first half, an 8-0 Bobcats run, capped by a Clayton trey, put them up 30-17.
The lead was still 12 points at 44-32 with 2:03 left in the half, but Toledo closed on a 7-0 run to get within five at halftime and had another 7-0 run early in the second half to go in front.
Hadaway and Elmore James scored nine points each for Ohio, with Hadaway leading the team by grabbing eight rebounds.
Javon Simmons had a double-double of 13 points and 16 rebounds for Toledo. Cochran had 13 points and eight rebounds. The Rockets had 12 offensive rebounds and an overall 40-29 rebounding advantage.
Ohio hosts Kent State at 7 p.m. Tuesday at The Convo.
