Marietta as a regular season game? Fuss did a great job with the schedule last year, and I'm sure this year's will be good - but games like this as regular season games are a fruitless joke. I can list 15 other D-1 schools that could accomplish the same objectives.

And yes, I have no problem being the elitist, big conference, stuffy snob in this case.

I think the difference between those D-I schools and Marietta is that Marietta won't hurt the RPI. It also can draw some regional interest. A lot of D-I schools play D-II and D-III schools in regular season games for those same reasons.

I personally don't mind one of these a year, would rather not, but it is what it is. However I am not seeing this "regional interest".

Now we know how BCS conference schools feel about scheduling us.  They are too good for us, and appearently, we are too good for smaller schools.

I have no problem with ONE regional D-III team coming to the Convo for a regular season game.  There may be 15 other horrible D-1 teams to come into the Convo and take a beating, but you know what, they all count against the RPI.  This one does not.  Why not accomplish the same objectives with a game that shouldn't cost us a whole lot of money that doesn't hurt us in the long run?

Yeah, I'd rather play a non-D-I than, say, Chicago State. It's only getting harder for teams in our position to fill out a schedule, and we're seeing games like this more and more.

This is where I'd love to see the NCAA mandate some form to OOC scheduling.  We should be afforded the opportunity to play some of the big boys, and we should be forced to play some of the lower tier teams.  Break the D1 teams into 3 tiers based on prior year RPI or something, require 1 home and 1 away within each tier or something.

I know it will never happen, it just drives me crazy that the NCAA can't do anything like this.

That was under a previous coach and a former AD.  Maybe HuggyBear would like to return to the Convo after all of these years.  Any other old fart remember seeing him play for the Green & White his freshman year?

Yeah, Huggins was so willing to bring his Bearcats to Athens, I am still mad that we kept turning him down on that 1-1 deal he begged for all those years!

Schaus grew up in Morgantown + Huggins attended OHIO.  Gotta be good for something.  Maybe a baseball game (think we already do that though)?

We have, but Carbone seems to prefer playing their D2 counterpart West Virginia State! Even in baseball, we love those lower division opponents.

I thought when Huggins was hired he said playing in Athens was a no win situation and not something he was looking to do.

A friend of mine was on the 1988 Ohio Wesleyan national championship team that took down the Cats in the Convo many years ago.  That's why they play the games, folks.

Was that the famous "no defense" game, with a final score something like 110 to 106 of the legendary Billy Hahn era?  I was out of town for that game, and I remember hearing the final score on the radio as I was coming back to Athens. I almost drove my car into the ditch.  I just couldn't believe it.  But, it was Billy Hahn, so I knew anything was possible.

122-115, Scott Tedder scored a visiting team record 50 points in the win. OWU won the DIII National Championship and Tedder was the DIII player of the year.

I remember we tried to press full court the whole game and OWU kept breaking the press and Tedder kept scoring from all angles possible.  I also remember the silliness of George Reid screeching at the OWU players trying to inbound the basketball.

I also remember I brought a good friend that day who was a big WVU fan and alumnus.  He had taken me to some games at the WVU Coliseum and I was returning the favor, wanting to impress him with how "good" and "bigtime" OU basketball was.

I've heard some rumblings about teams we'll be hosting in the Convo: Arkansas State, Tennessee-Martin, and Kennesaw State are the ones I can remember.

What's sad is that those "powerhouses" are the ones I can remember, there were others of equal or lesser notoriety.

The same scheduling philosophy applied to football is now dictating the basketball schedules. Play the weakest competition whenever possible. How are the fans going to support the program with low major action in the house every night? If you go back 6 or 7 years on the schedule the team was playing multiple games against BCS opponents and only a couple of low majors. Boeh when he was AD frequently utilized the 2 for 1 series structure to occassionally bring BCS schools to the Convo with a couple of nice money games on neutral sites. Schaus is signing for the cats 1 BCS school on the road with 6-7 home contests against low majors. Ohio has no business signing 1 for 1's with schools from the OVC, Atlantic Sun and the Northeast conference. I don't care if those teams won their leagues the prior year those schools have no name recognition among college basketball fans. The kind of teams we schedule 1 for 1 should come from non-BCS leagues and the A10, CAA, MVC, WCC, Horizon, Big West. They don't necessarily have to be great RPI teams just so long as they are recognized by the fans as legit D1. From the basketball board, the Temple game for instance had about twice the attendance as most of the other games in December. If I can remember correctly, it was the same way when Tulsa visited the Convo a few years ago. There is no way a school can build a fanbase on a steady diet of OVC, A Sun and MAC West schools. Attendance is low for a good reason.

Most Memorable Bobcat Events Attended
2010 97-83 win over Georgetown in NCAA 1st round
2012 45-13 victory over ULM in the Independence Bowl
2015 34-3 drubbing of Miami @ Peden front of 25,086

No, it's not spot on. The philosophy is not to schedule the softest teams possible but to secure as many home games as possible. Right now, yes, that means getting crappy teams in here because nobody who is any good wants to come to Athens. But Groce has clearly been willing to schedule tough opponents on the road or at neutral sites, too.

I have to agree with Uncie Wes as well.  I think the current philosophy is that until we dominate who we currently have on our schedule, there's no argument to upgrade it.   We also try to get as many home games as possible against teams that have some credentials on paper, but are not recongnizable to the average fan.   And considering our results during the past two regular seasons I feel their argument is that until we dominate our current schedule how can you argue that we need to upgrade it.

As a season ticket holder, if it takes a 2-for-1 to get a few brand name schools in the Convo, I'm up for.  And as you pointed out so accurately, our fans do show up when a name brand school comes to the Convo.  Last year all it took was Temple.    I'm not an AD, so I'm sure it's easier said than done, but I'd love for us to beat the bushes to get at least one big name/fun/give non-die hard OHIO fans a reason to come to the Convo type of game each season.

Another scheduling issue I'd like to see us change is when we do schedule to play a brand name school on the road, avoid Top 10 schools. May sound like we're being too picky, but pick your beatings wisely.  For example, Kansas is a terrible choice.  @Pittisburgh wasn't great either.  I'd avoid Duke, UK and all other almost assured 30-50 point beat-downs.  I'm not even sure @Louisville this year is a great choice.   I'd instead be selective and choose the 2nd tier schools from BCS Conferences.    Big name schools, from big name conferences, who we have a punchers chance to upset.

That would be nice in theory, but five teams from the Atlantic Sun ranked higher than Ohio in the RPI and three from the OVC (in somewhat of a down year for the conference as a whole). The A-Sun ranked as a conference pretty on par with the MAC. This is why we get home-and-homes with some of these teams. Right now, we're far from on par with the other conferences named. That's because we tend to lose a fair share of the games we play against these schools from the conferences you think we should never play. It's unfortunate, but we're not too good for anyone.

I think playing Kansas and Pittsburgh have benefits, even when Ohio gets killed. I think it ultimately helped make the team better. I wouldn't want more than one of those per year, though.

I disagree. If we want to upgrade our schedule we will have to play more road games. Playing 3 or 4 games above our head on the road will help us in the long term. It probably won't help us in the short term, but you know what? You just might win some of those games. I think it helps recruiting, as well. Do youwant to tell your family and friends you're playing Kansas and Pittsburgh or Wofford? I'm not saying it's easy, but we used to do it and we still can.
