To an extent, I agree. My hesitation is that this is the "transfer age" and it feels like Boals is trying to build a program from youth in an era when the youth doesn't often stay where they started. I know we've done well the past couple of years of retaining talent, but in any given season, we can be gutted. Akron may have to reboot their roster every couple of years, but the guys they are bringing in seem more likely to contribute immediately rather than develop in the program and play in a year or two. If we develop guys and keep them here, I'm all for it. I just can't depend on that happening in the current era.

This is why I don't love the idea of banking schollies. Who knows what this roster looks like at the conclusion of next season. We're in win now mode with so many returnees and upperclassmen. Find another piece to the puzzle that can help now, worry about 25/26 at the end of 24/25.

My philosophy as well. Will be disappointing if we bank the schollie and don't add another portal big for 2024-2025.

I agree. I don't necessarily need Dwight Wilson but I also don't want to settle on Vic Searls. I would absolutely love a Jon Smith.

I know it's asking a lot because I think he was very good here (and underappreciated), but I'd love a Sylvester Ogbanda clone.

I think Boals has shown he wants a mixture of players. He's gone after upperclassmen transfers as well as high school seniors. The hope is that you can retain the youngsters for a few seasons and limit the roster turnover on a yearly basis.

It's not guaranteed to work but it should help with roster retention since you'll commit less NIL money to unproven players while they're developing with more experienced players in front of them. When the older players leave, it provides the opportunity for the young players to step up. If they haven't shown enough in practice, you can advise them to move on and target more experienced transfers. It's honestly not a bad strategy if Boals can continue to cultivate a successful culture with the "right type of guys"

The Akron method is hit-or-miss. You can hit a home run and be very successful or you can bomb. Either scenario, it'll likely lead to high turnover on a yearly basis.

So far, the Zips have had more success so it's hard to argue with their approach but it's certainly more of a grind and leaves less margin of error. If you miss out on your intended targets or they don't live up to your expectations, it can make things really difficult.

I see both the logic and the downside to how the Zips work the portal. But here is another look at how another MAC foe has worked the portal. Kent State has a bunch of rather non-descript portal transfers from mostly mid-level programs. But a closer look reveals all but one of these transfers were multi-year starters and double-figure scorers where they came from and the one that wasn't (a freshman) actually started the last 10-12 games at PG for St. Louis.

I see the star power Akron's transfers offer, but there is also something to be said for proven players/starters. Which is better, only time will tell. Just saying there is more than one way to recruit from the portal.

Not a transfer, but we offered 2024 Huntington Prep big Kiir Kuany. 6’9. Holds offers from Youngstown State, Utah State, and Eastern Michigan.

https://x.com/kuanykiir7/status/1794431523652841482?s=46&...

I noticed Boals following him (and also his brothers, older one played at VCU) awhile back. Interesting timing on the offer. Wonder if we exhausted all transfer options of interest.

This vid does showcase a lot. I like him. Curious why he hasn’t signed with anyone yet?

I don't know if we can offer as much playing time as his other offers but since he hasn't signed maybe he doesn't feel great about those offers at all.

This is my thought. He’s let the best (Utah State) sit for over a month and Idk that we’d bother offering this late otherwise.

If we got him, is it possible we redshirt him? I just don’t see Searls, Ayden and Kuany all getting 10 minutes per game. And then if he redshirts, it doesn’t address building depth to a position of need for the upcoming season.

In this scenario. Are you redshirting because a player is not ready? Or because the position is logjammed? In 2021, BVP, Wilson, Foster, Granger, and Miguel each got run. Of course the first two were good, but having three other wide bodies on the roster gave Boals options and competition to see who would emerge (Granger).

Also, as long as our new bigs are collectively better than the Wiz, we will have upgraded the front court from last season. I have a feeling Searls will be an upgrade on his own. Evans and/or Kuany (maybe) is your upgrade over the 0 Ezuma gave us.

Even in this landscape, planning for a year, two, three down the line has value. You want the next AJ Clayton? A four year player who is a pillar of the program as an upperclassmen? You need some options to pick from. I sometimes think back to when we brought in Devaughn Washington, Mo Pearson, and Zach Nagtzaam as freshmen to a team that had Leon, Jerome, and KVK. Only Devaughn panned out from that group and Mo and Zach didn't last for non-ability reasons. That year, we used four bigs in the rotation with Devaughn being the fourth. What if we had only brought in Zach? IIRC he took a medical redshirt that season. We'd be left with only a three big rotation.

Agree with this. I think you just see how it unfolds. Especially after having no depth last year.

That's the deal. If Boals wants to build this into an every year mid-major powerhouse (and with an arena the size of the Convo, why not?) which might in turn change the MAC into a two-bid league - time to go for it. Let the p5's overpay for guys like Arkansas did and didn't even make the NIT.

Seriously, there could be crowds like the one at the Fiami game last season anytime school is in session and the weather cooperates. Good recruiting plus home court advantage.....

It’s June 1st and still no additional big add from portal or HS ranks. If we don’t get Kuany, it sure looks like we are rolling with Vic and Ayden down low for next season. It’s getting late.

You may not like it. I may not like it. But that's an unfair statement when AJ Clayton is going to be our starting center.

We're rolling with Clayton, Evans, Searls and maybe Kuany/other.

Yup…well aware that Clayton is our starting center, even though he’s not a true center. I’m talking about the “bigs” depth coming off the bench.

I’m curious how a normal discussion in this thread about our bigs and current “bigs” depth on the roster would generate this response from you?

But since you asked. I really don’t ask for much. I ask for our guys on full scholarship to attend classes and not cost us a much needed 6’8+ scholarship for two years because they can’t qualify academically with a program full of tutors and resources to help. My other requirement for a guy on a full scholarship is to be able to catch the ball and set a screen without moving their feet. I really don’t ask for much.

Could Ryan Greenwood set a screen without moving his feet? How about Shaun McVicker?

I have no problem with a starting lineup of:
PG: Shereef Mitchell
SG: Jackson Pavezeltke
C: AJ Clayton
PF: Aidan Hadaway
SF: AJ Brown

With a bench of:
PG: Elijah Elliot
SG: Ajay Sheldon
C: Vic Searls
PF: Ben Nichol
SF: Elmore James

With Burris, Evans and Evans getting some time here and there. Last year we had way less behind Clayton so having Searls and Evans will be an upgrade and the guys off the bench around those two are going to be much better.

I think most of us expect that to be the starting lineup. Ayden Evans and Jessie Burris are going to play or need to agree be redshirted. Those guys are probably both in the top 5 recruits of the past 15 years. If we can't find playing time for them then we have a really, really deep team. My guess is that Evans will be in the big rotation and Nicol will see minimal time. Brown and James almost have to be the small forwards if they are both actually healthy for a change. How Burris is going to fit into the guard rotation is hard to figure. We seem to have a lot of good players. What we don't have is that DJ Cooper, Jason Preston, Mark Sears type of star. Those type of guys are going to be impossible to keep in the future.

I don't think Burris is in the top 5 recruits of the past 15 years category...but I hear ya on the possible redshirt.
