Saw an obit. Didn't realize that it was his silhouette on the NBA logo. He was one of the all-time basketball greats. RIP.

My family drives down I-77 thru WV usually once a year and I remember there being a sign for West's hometown. I would point this out with varied interest (wife none, daughter some, son a bit more). Don't believe I've seen this sign (maybe I've missed it) the last few years, including yesterday.
Was it Cabin Creek?

I'm truly saddened by the passing of NBA legend Jerry West, whose silhouette is on the NBA logo. It goes way back, starting with his Los Angeles Lakers' intense battles against my Willis Reed/Walt Frazier-led NY Knicks during my high school and college years. Later, when I was a sports writer for Newsday/NY Daily News, West always returned my phone calls and provided pertinent info/his keen insight as the Lakers' general manager. R.I.P., Jerry. You truly were one of the all-time greats!!!

A nice story in the Pittsburgh paper. I met him a few times. He broke his nose 9 times! Great career but had the unfortunate timing to play in the great Celtics era.

I grew up watching him play for the Lakers. Fantastic player and front office leader. Amazing interviews with him on YouTube. Truly one of the all time greats. Very sad and surprising news. RIP.

Listened to an interview yesterday that discussed his darkness. Never felt he was fully accomplished, suffered from life-long depression after a brutal childhood. Celebrated, but very isolated. Even the greats can be troubled.

I read that too and it really surprised me, as he accomplished so much. He was considered one of the greats, but his timing was off playing in the same era as the Celtics with Bill Russell and John Havlicek, et al. The same could be said of Wilt the Stilt.

If Jerry played in today's era he would be crushed daily on TV and social media for not having enough rings. Just goes to show how ridiculous media coverage has gotten.

Actually it was mentioned quite a bit in those days. Something he had to deal with then. He was not “crushed” in terms of 2020s levels due to electronic media but “crushed” in terms of the 70s, I think he was to some extent. A lot of “yeah, but…” responses when he was mentioned in conversation.

Sorry, what?
