Our win over St. Bonaventure returned land to Ohio on the r/collegebasketball imperialism map!

For the uninitiated, the way this works is at the beginning of the season, every county in the country is part of a territory that belongs to the D1 school closest to that county's geographical center. As games are played, territories are conquered when one team defeats another team that has land. Wash, rinse, repeat every day. The idea is that hopefully at the end of the season, the national champion controls the entire map, though there is a possibility other teams hold some land at the end of the year.

The only way to gain land is to defeat a team that has land. Then you take all of their land. Michigan State is top 10 in the country but lost all their land when they lost to Duke, so you don't see them on the map. Our original territory is currently controlled by UC-Irvine. We lost that territory by losing to Arkansas State, and there is a string of losses from Arkansas State leading to UC-Irvine now controlling that land. We briefly gained land in Illinois by defeating ISU, who had not yet played at the time, but lost it to St. Mary's.

Miami is the only MAC other team currently holding land. They have their starting territory and gained a small area in Virginia by beating Old Dominion in game 1. Looking ahead, I think the only way the MAC loses land before conference play is if Miami loses to Wright State, but then if that happens EMU could take it right back from Wright. Losses to non-D1s don't count. The MAC can gain land if Purdue beats Auburn (thereby keeping their land) and then loses to Kent State.

It doesn't mean anything and it's all for fun.

I don't understand why UMass does not have any territory.

Because ever since their last loss (which loses any land they have), the teams they beat didn't have land to give. If you have land and lose a game, the team that beat you takes all your land, which may include your starting territory if you still have it. The only way to regain land is to beat a team with land.

This is why Miami's territory is so small despite their record. They have their starting territory and they took Old Dominion's land during both teams' first game. Since then their schedule has been so weak that it is unlikely they play anyone holding land at the time of the game.

Michigan State is #9 in the country and has no land because they lost it all when they suffered their first loss of the season against Duke. They played Penn State and won since then but Penn State didn't have any land to give.

Most, possibly all, of the land we currently have once belonged to Buffalo. UB was undefeated and then Bonaventure beat them, taking all of UB's land. I don't know if Bonnies gained land by beating Colgate.

OK. Thanks for explaining it. I now understand how it works.
