This one still stings. Akron was there for the taking, but they have Freeman and we don’t have down low even half the player Freeman is. Crazy to think if we finished 4th or 5th there is a good chance we are 40 minutes away from the NCAA tourney .

Freeman, their Hunter, and Ali Ali killed us. We just didn't have enough of that sort of talent on our team; not enough guys capable of making big plays consistently.

There was a pretty serious talent gap between them and us. AJ Brown would have helped, obviously. But it's concerning that we were so reliant on 3 5th year guys in the end. Next year's roster feels like there are real gaps.

Two pretty equal teams. Great energy and competitiveness by both teams. One team unexpectedly made more 3s than the other. If you would have told me Hunter, Ali, and Freeman were going to bang in 6-7 three pointers, I would have said our chances were not good. We really couldn’t defense these very well though Hadaway was jumping out of his shoes trying. Different night we could have won. But on this night, Akron made more shots than we did.

I praise Boals and the team because I think they over achieved vs the talent level and adversity faced. No doubt we could have won this game but Akron bigs hit the 3s and Freeman was All World. I would like to have a few of those blocked shots back. Just seems like we could have done better getting the ball in the hole from 2-3 feet. I don’t know how many shots we had blocked or were misguided from 2-3 feet.

No doubt, Wiz should have been in more in the 2nd half. That's on Boals.

Borna, I have preached guarding the three point line all year. Boals would rather have the weak side defenders and others in the lane. The game has changed so much. Guys hit threes now. I would rather guard 1v1 one in the lane and give up 2 rather than leave 3-point shooters wide open.

I disagree. Its called sample size. Boals was forced to play Wiz early and often because we literally have no other option when one of our starters gets 2 very early fouls. With Wiz on the floor, its 4 on 5 at the offensive end and the odds of giving up points on the defensive end dramatically goes up.

As much improvement as he may have made from last year, he realistically could've been called for 7-8 fouls in that game. The refs were horrible both ways.

Who cares? Let him foul out. He banged and defended Freeman better than Clayton. He got more rebounds in less minutes. He got more field goals at the rim than Clayton. And look at Freeman's stats in 1st vs 2nd half.

I'm not claiming Wiz is a better player than Clayton. I'm saying in that game, on that day, with those matchup, he was performing much better and needed to be on the floor more.

Would it have ultimately mattered? We'll never know.

Yeah, but if he fouled out, he couldn't play!

I'd say that is the right approach during a regular season game but when its do or die, I can't place my trust on Wiz to hold his own against the MAC POY

I was gutted Friday, just got around to posting. I was very confident. You have to give them credit for the 2nd half they put together. They hit 6 three pointers (most contested) in a row down the stretch...that was huge. Add in Freeman who was just a complete mismatch for us (and the whole conference) and we did our best to hang tough but didn't hit enough shots.

Clayton had one of his worst games for sure, but he is still one of my favorites that I think is a top tier player in the conference for sure. He needs to stop with the awkward quickly flick from the top of his head shot. NOT to be confused with a catch and shoot in a more normal sense where he makes a sound mechanical shot. Add in some more confidence and aggression int he paint and I think he could be a contended for MAC POTY, a prediction Jason Carter once made.

Jaylin shot OK for the game but never really got his scoring going the last 3 weeks of the season. Reef struggled to find the net too, and Hadaway fired 4 three pointers...

The Freeman missed FT and own rebound and putback was a backbreaker. The turnover when Hunter/Clayton got mixed up with about 90 seconds to go was gutting too. Yuck.

Sat behind a lot of family members, always tough to see the heartbreak. Michael Brown was there with their Mom. Also saw Jacy Sheldon made the trip up with some OSU teammates as well.

A long 7+ month wait until we are back on the court, already can't wait.

+1. I also was hoping to see Wiz and Clayton on the floor at the same time down the stretch of the game. Wiz earned more PT in the second half. It may have not been the difference, but we won the first half and lost the second --- and ultimately the game.

Admittedly a bit of a pet peeve, but for some reason people always say that big men have "fouls to give."

Fouls are bad. If a single player is wracking up 5 fouls in limited minutes it's basically a certainty that your opponent is in the bonus (if not the double bonus) and you're giving away easy points where you shouldn't.

Akron was in the bonus with 6 minutes to play. If Wiz is in there with the intention of committing two more fouls, they'd have gotten free throws on every touch foul for the final 10 minutes.

Fouls are bad defense. I don't understand why so many people suggest bigs have 5 fouls to give. They should be giving as few of them as possible.

Not exactly what I meant. If our 6'11'' big man is not in the game when we are getting ripped apart in the paint why is he on the roster?

I knew what you were getting at but the fact remains Wiz was performing much better on that day, against Freeman, than Clayton was.

Boals didn't magically lose all confidence in Wiz as he played 10-14 minutes a game all year, even in games against more athletic guys where he didn't match up well and showed a lack of coordination and control.

Against Akron though, he was banging and providing size that was disrupting or at minimum distracting Freeman and getting rebounds and scoring. It was one of his better halves all year.

I don't know why Boals didn't play him more in the 2nd half. Maybe he wanted to roll with the main guys who got us there rather than play the matchup for the day/opponent.

That's why I said, that's on Boals.

Good points and I understand the rolling with the main guys but if we didn't do something to slow Freeman down during that stretch it didn't matter what we did offensively. I wouldn't have cared if Gabe fouled him 5 times. At least it would have been 5 possessions where he didn't rome free in the paint doing whatever he wanted.
