When the tournament expanded to 64 teams, about 21% of all teams got a bid. If there are 76 bids for 361 teams (including those teams currently in transition years), it's also about 21% of all teams.

EDIT: actually, scratch that thought. Quoting someone on Twitter: "Most new D1 joiners over the past couple decades have been to one-bid leagues only so they haven’t been taking anybody’s spot away other than the teams in their own conference. If the NEC adds 10 teams the % of D1 teams making the tourney goes down but there’s no real impact."

To really make things fair, every year a P5 should have to play a mid major home and home. For example the MAC plays the Big 10. We play Illinois at home and Wisconsin on the road, then flip it the next year and so on. The schedule control the P5 has gives them an unfair advantage.

I mean, this would be a good idea if they expanded the tournament to one-bid conferences or low/mid majors with strong records. I could get on board with that all day.

Alas... all they're doing is looking for another way to include a 10-20 BIG 10 team.

I think shrinking the tournament down to around 8 or 12 so you have actually shown yourself to be one of the best teams in the country instead of a sometimes a decent teams that catches a lot of breaks and has several hot shooting nights in a row makes sense.

I think allowing EVERYONE in to take politics out of it would make some sense and wouldn't add a lot of rounds. I mean we are already letting in teams that we already know aren't the best team in the country so who really cares if there are more.

In some way only allowing conference champions like it was a long time ago would make sense but with the disparity in the strength of conferences this really isn't fair.

Anything else is a consideration on how to run a tournament as a fan spectacle and not meant to be a efficient way of actually crowning a national champion. So whatever. Add bids or don't. I don't care or see how it really matters at all. Make your spectacle. Make money.

This. Yea, I think this needs to include regular season champion mid-majors with strong records who fall short in conference tourneys and not just an expansion to more P5. Especially, when those overall records are like 17-13 and sub .500 in conference as you said. That dilutes the product imo.

Three things I think would make things fair for all concerned.

1) No team with a record below .500 in the league they play in is eligible for at-large consideration.

2) No league gets more than 10 teams total in the field, and no more than two leagues can have up to 10 teams in any given season.

3) Every mid-major champion in a Top 15 league or better gets into the field.

Explanation:
No. 1 - This is self explanatory. If you choose to play in a power conference, you should not be rewarded for mediocre play in that conference.

No. 2 - Just because power conferences load up with multiple teams does not automatically mean they get more teams in the field. If No. 1 does not bite into that list, No. 2 certainly should.

No. 3 - What we're really talking about here is five or six teams, as 90-percent of the Top 10 conferences in any season gets at least 2 teams. The next 5 top mid-majors leagues are wearing a scarlet 1-bid letter when in reality the body of work for those league champs should be rewarded. Granted, MAC has not been a Top 15 league for a few year. But it was not that long ago when the MAC was a consistent Top 15. And I believe a little incentive like this could get the MAC and other mid-majors leagues making a serious push to be in this number, annually.
