Due to concerns over the White House and the OHIO AG’s orders to disband DEI events and programming at the threat of loss of funds.

Bobcat Love had a comment on this cancellation on both the football and basketball pages earlier today.

Evidently, the mods deleted these posts as BL predicted. He was a little more verbose and a lot more critical about this decision made by President Gonzalez and the university. While I haven't agreed with everything Bobcat Love has posted recently on the athletic side of Ohio University, he was 100% accurate on this issue.

I, for one, was hoping the mods would refrain from censoring his remarks.

Well, that’s why I put it over here. And like it or not it is OHIO University related. And it really sucks! Sucks for those alumni and for the business community. If you’ve never been, this is a BIG event.

Love's post was more than verbose; it was way over the top. This wasn't President Gonzalez's call, I'm sure. All state universities in Ohio have agreed to keep their heads low during this anti-DEI phase. Hopefully, this insane period will pass...

Dividing us by skin color is not something to be celebrated or protected. That's the opposite of Diversity and Inclusion.

Out of curiosity, who did BAR hurt? Who is the victim of this "division" exactly?

I'm also curious: how does one define which groups of alumni or students are allowed to have reunions and organizations? What else is off limits besides race? And how do we determine and explain what is off limits and why? Is the goal really to have the federal government and state legislators dictate what alumni groups can do on our campus?

Well the Civil Rights Act, the law of the land, says you should not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.

If no groups are off limits, would you be OK with a White Alumni Weekend? If no, why not?

The Civil Rights Act prohibits discrimination in businesses and covers voting and educational rights. It does not in any way prohibit the formation or gathering of alumni groups based on race. Who is being discriminated against in this case? Whose access to education/voting rights/businesses is limited? Not really seeing the connection between the Civil Rights Act and the decision to cancel the BAR.

And, sure, if some folks want to put together a White Alumni Weekend they can knock themselves out. It won't be popular and they'll look pretty dumb in doing so, but I don't think they shouldn't have the right to do it if they really want to.

As I mentioned, it's not at all clear to me how one determines what's allowed and what isn't. There are several Christian, Jewish, and Muslim groups on campus. Are they no longer allowed? What about the Ecuadorian student group? The Italian American one? Are Frats and Sororities now gonna have to be co-ed?

You seem to think BAR was a bad thing and it was discriminatory. I'm curious to know more about why you think so, and how you envision federal/state legislation that dictates what events and groups can gather in Athens working.

This issue is pretty clearly a matter of a public institution creating these groups/events. The public institution exists for and should support all it's students and alumni. You say "if some folks want to" but that isn't what is happening, it is the University putting on the event. So would you be OK if the University chose to put on a White Alumni Weekend?

On that same point, all the other groups you mentioned are not in the same discussion as they are not things born out of and administered by the University itself. And sidebar, it makes A LOT more sense to me to congregate on the basis of their religion or birth country as that binds them by a set of values and culture far greater than the color of their skin would.

I find the concept completely ridiculous and divisive. That said, I don't think I would say they should be eliminated by force of law or funding, and would much prefer they go away by way of the culture stopping their obsession with race.

Oh, I didn't realize that. So the University created the black alumni group? Can you share some insight into how you know that? Curious to read about it more.

I can see how this is a distinction. Can you share with me how you know that the Latino Student Union or Korean Culture Club or Chabad at OU are not administered by the University and what the distinction is with the BAR? What about Frats and Sororities?

Andrew Ruck wrote:

Any reason you can think of why black Americans may not know their country of origin? Also, do you not think that there are shared values and culture amongst African Americans? How do you measure what level of value/cutural alignment warrants a group that can gather? Who gets to decide that?

Andrew Ruck wrote:

I'm still curious who you think is being discriminated against when a group like this gathers on campus? You feel it's divisive -- who is that impacting and harming?

It feels like a step in the wrong direction to have the federal government and state legislators dictating this.

Sorry about the quote mistake.

You clearly have no understanding of culture in America and your comments such as "their" might as well say "those people." Greek Life is clearly born out of, regulated by and administered by the university. My advice based on the beating you're taking here, get out while you're ahead.

I don't think he's taking a beating here, and I don't think there's any reason why the conversation needs to be drawn on the lines you're drawing them.

Frankly, it's ridiculous to act like using an accurate pronoun of "their" to describe the general concept of a racial group is even remotely akin to saying "those people." There's nothing helpful about that, and it's more than a little bit disingenuous. Get a grip.

Nobody has said anything remotely racist here, and we can have this conversation civilly. Stop trying to argue with some caricature of the other side that you have in your head, and engage with the actual person in front of you.

Go back and read the posts. Both DCF and Turdhats were pretty clear in their comments. As for civility, what hasn't been civil? People are expressing opinions some of which are deeply held based on personal experiences. I'm guessing that what we have here is a bunch of white folks discussing issues that are currently being successfully used to divide this country.

How are your first two sentences consistent with the second. DCF immediately responding by calling his post "f****ing ignorant" and didn't attempt to engage in a conversation beyond that. You then made a truly ridiculous attempt to distort what Andrew said in a way that attempts to cast it as racist. Civil, indeed.

Both are stupid things to do, and there is a civil conversation taking place. But it's between Andrew and I, and your attempt to contribute's been completely useless, disingenuous, and intellectually dishonest. You just came here to pile on. Pretty lame, honestly.

And I know you're completely aware of that because you didn't even make a half-hearted attempt to make your case again.

There have been "all white" groups in this country forever.

Besides the restricted country clubs and the like, in 2023, there were 165 active white nationalist groups across the United States.

Those poor white gentiles... they are soooooooooooooo discriminated against. How many other groups could attack our nation's capitol and get pardoned?

I guess our respective skins are a little thicker and thinner than the other. By the way, there were seven posters who commented on this topic prior to your usual authoritarian pronouncements. As for piling on, I actually posted very early in the thread that was deleted and added additional perspective by linking the action on the women's program at OU-L. As for civility, using words and phrases like "truly ridiculous" and "stupid" and "disingenuous" and "intellectually dishonest" certainly shoots a hole in that argument.

Anyway, it doesn't matter what any of us say, you'll always have one more comment to make so I'm going grocery shopping.

I'm having a civil conversation with Andrew, not you. Your contributions here are too stupid to warrant that. Seriously man, you came here to try and make the argument that because Andrew used the word "their" he was saying "those people."

You've yet to try and defend that as a reasonable thing to say. We all know why.

But good contribution here. Well done.
