Part of the OU Master Plan:

http://www.thepostathens.com/article/2016/11/ohio-bird-ho...

Interesting to see how long this might take and how they are gonna get the funding for it.

In possibly related news, the full master plan makes references to eliminating the golf course. If these buildings go where they are talking about putting them, it would certainly eat into one or more of the current holes. I know the golf fanatics on here would be horrified at the thought of losing the course (I like it a lot myself), but in terms of cost/benefit and space that students actually use, I can see why it might be on the chopping block in coming years.

Is there still a chance that they'll build that course at University Estates?

That course died a long time ago - lack of money and opposition from those concerned about the water supply. Most courses that I've seen build have the course built first followed by the homes.

Is Ping center still sufficient to meet our needs? It was pretty full when I was in school years ago, so I assume it is still the case or worse now. I always figured at some point they may need to use some of the adjacent land for additions.

My recollection of Grover Center:

One "Universal Gym"

A couple of multi-purpose courts, with not the best floors

A sauna that was broken, more then it worked

The first time I saw Ping,I almost fell over.

I worked out at Ping on a recent visit to Athens. They are utilizing the space a lot better now, with more gym equipment spread out over a larger area. But it could still use an expansion.

Just a curious question/thought here. How much is the existing Aquatic Center being utilized? If we were to replace Women's Swimming and Diving with another sport, could we scale down the size and scope of what is required?

That pool is active every hour it's open. And no, scaling the facility down is equivalent to having a college golf team with no golf course. Oh, wait we have that, how has that worked out?

First of all, the golf course is going nowhere. If we build a new aquatic center and hockey rink which in itself is interesting considering it's a club sport and how many towns south of a line from Cincinnati to Stubenville have a rink, it will go east of Ping and encompass parking, the existing golf/tennis club house and maybe, and I say maybe, part of the first hole on the golf course. The university has way more important needs than these two facilities. And don't forget folks, the new prez will dictate what happens. I sure hope he and Dustin Johnson are friends.

Using that reasoning, we ought to get rid of Peden stadium since it's used only six days out the year for football.

What makes you so sure? This is directly pulled from the Master Plan:

Within the timeframe of this plan there is no need identified that would require significant alteration of the golf course. Changes in program and
proposed projects, however, could contribute to the removal of the
golf course due to the current high utilization of land. In the short-term, the Master Plan recommends retaining the golf course. In the long-term, a
strategic decision could be made to replace the golf course with another
use such as athletic fields, or green space.

Those last two words are almost funny. A golf course is green space which this extended fall is being used by large numbers of students. Secondly, the fate of the golf course and so many other things will be dependent on the next president. Here's hoping that we get a golfer. And finally I base my comments on recent conversations with the powers that be and those in the know in the administration.

I'm actually glad to hear all of that, and I agree that the course adds to the aesthetics of the campus, but I was struck by the negative tone about the course in that whole document. Elsewhere in the plan, it's called a "barrier" and essentially an impediment to progress.

For those of us who went to O.U.,"back in the day",before 24 hour coed visitation,I believe it was Bob Hope who said something to the effect that O.U.'s golf course had 18 holes during the day,and several hundred out night.

I was at the Bob Hope event, and this is an example of how quotes get mangled and more sensational with the passage of time. What Hope actually said was that while playing the golf course here if you kicked a bush it was likely that it would kick back. Everyone knew from the context in which he said it that he was referring to couples "making out" (as the term was used in those days) in the bushes. I don't remember the build up to that punch line, but it was clear what he meant when he delivered it, and everyone in the audience responded with a knowing laugh. Hope had the greatest timing with his jokes and this whole event had a good deal of "local color." As I recall, he had found out information about dorm dinning and made several jokes about that as well as some OHIO football related humor. He was a real showman.

My brother lived on the West Green at the time.
He said Bob Hope had an "advance team" on campus talking to people so that he could include "site specific" jokes.

Wonder if OU has ever considered buying another local golf course and renovating it into a legit Div. 1 golf course? There is the Elm between Athens and Albany which is in horrible shape, but with the University's money, they may be able to make it look decent. Still only 9 holes though. Not sure if there is enough land around it to buy and make it an 18 hole course? The Athens Country Club is about the 18 hole course within a 30 mile radius, I think.

The country club is only 9 holes too. Athens County is pretty much a golf ghetto. Closest 18 hole course in just south of Logan.

There was at one time talk of building an 18 hole course as part of the University Estates development. But when that project went under, those grand plans never came to fruition.

It was actually originally promoted as a golf course community. The course was laid out and some preliminary dirt movement had started. The developer just didn't have the money to build it plus the local environmental activists campaigned hard against it. Most golf course communities build the course first and then put up the houses. We actually had an option/deposit on the purchase of a lot but when it was clear the course wasn't happening we and some others got our money back.

You realize there are no local golf courses.
