Definitely a head scratcher as to why this took so long, especially with recruiting signing day this week:

Looks like they want to lay their hands on a coach who can heal a broken program.

ROTFL! You certainly have a good feel for the ORU environment and corporate culture.

Over past few years the president demanded that he could only recruit players that had professed their faith and players/recruits had to achieve a specific score level on a "faith" test to be eligible. recruits were also not allowed to have any tattoos.

Hmmm. . . . sort of like the voters in Alabama who twice elected a governor who preached moral piety. A governor who touted himself as a paragon of probity.

Not sure I see the connection between the Alabama ex-Governor's hypocrisy and the ORU faith test.

If you say so, borna

OCF, too many times people in the public eye preach one thing but live life another way. I find it hypocritical how the Alabama governor wants to be seen in the public eye and I see a little bit of that in what cc-cat posted about ORU. Hope that clears up my earlier post.

I still don't see the connection, unless one of the students who took the faith pledge somehow didn't live up to it. That certainly could happen, but you seem to be a little preemptive in your criticism.

Faith? How could anyone prove that anybody "lived up to" a pledge of "Faith"? Buncha hocus pocus jabberwocky....'Bama Gov, ORU "pledges" whatever....

It clears up your post but muddies the thread. We could devolve every basketball related thread to a finger pointing at hypocrisy and a judgement of the actions of others. The time honored tradition of BA thread drift is well upheld by many , including myself at times....but somehow most try to define how it ties together.

I think it is pretty evident that the Prez at ORU is a problem. I am not sure how adding the Alabama gov out of left field adds to the discussion except to open the door for others to inject their morals and judgements. NOthing to do with the actual situation or basketball in general....just came off as your need to get that in there rather than discussion about BYU, ORU and their requirements of athletes or basketball as it relates to Uni Leaders and Boards or similar. If your intent was to tie the Gov in with basketball and a specific program I apologize for missing the connection.

ORU does not have a "faith test" in recruiting players, what it does have is a system whereby the coach recruiting a prospective athlete looks at four areas of that athlete's life. Those four are academic, social, spiritual and athletic. The coach evaluates the kid and then the coaching staff are the people who choose who to recruit and who gets an offer/scholarship. The local media in Tulsa made it sound a lot worse as most are die hard Sutton fans and were ticked that ORU canned Scott Sutton and his brother Sean. For the record, you do not have to be a Christian to play for ORU, but there is an "honor code" you pledge to live by while there.

I think the connection between Oral Roberts and the gov is that U OF ORAL demands that the athletes pledge to their faith and as noted above must pledge their behavior. Yet oral se was basically a snakes salesman (open for debate). Jr was a scum who ripped off money from donations and whose wife slept around with underage boys. The school has been caught in other very unchristian like behavior scandals. So like the governor of Alabama. Preach to yourself and home before evaluating others as to their worthiness.

Thanks for the clarification.

As for the allegation of no tattoos, look no farther than photos from this year's team. Tattoos are not an issue.

Let's add Bill O'Reilly to this long list. Preaches and writes books about living an old-school life of virtue and millions of ignorant followers eat it up. All the while, off camera, . . .

So those folks who liked O'Reilly's show and/or his books are a mass of ignorant yokels? And, do you know what O'Reilly actually did off-camera? The information that is in the public domain, at this point, is somewhat vague. Now, I'm not saying that when all the facts come out that O'Reilly might not end up looking like a hypocrite, but once again you seem to be jumping to premature conclusions and, on top of that, you are casting aspersions on his viewers and readers.

[Edited as a result of Jeff's sharp eye. Thanks, Jeff.]

Jeff, honest question: Looking through this thread, at what point would you say the "politics" started?

If you decide to send this thread to Siberia, Trump wants to know if you can drop him off in Moscow.

Yes, OCF, we all know. You never start a political discussion but you always defend your side of the story. . . yada, yada, yada. . .let's make sure you point that out once again.
