Any tips on Jackie O's type places in Charlottsville?

Looking for casual dining and good beer.

Thanks

The place to be in Charlottesville is the Downtown Mall. In the 70's Charlottesville was like any other Appalachian region town then they made the decision to close the main street and make it a pedestrian walkway. With it pedestrian there is outdoor dining into the middle of the former street. Last time I was there in the summer I had dinner at Himalayan Fusion with cuisine from Nepal. Downtown mall is more of a foodie scene than anything else and is geared toward a mature crowd. Close to campus there are a few college pubs and sandwich shops. There is a winery scene down in Charlottesville but I am not aware of any Breweries.

About a year ago we were there. I agree with Uncle Wes about the downtown "street mall." My wife and I walked down there and found a good place to eat, but I'm sorry that I can't remember the name of the place. My wife keeps a trip diary. I'll try to remember to ask her to look up the name of the place tomorrow.

With so many local breweries in the area, you almost can't go wrong finding good local beer. Beer run has a good selection and good food, but isn't really that close to the downtown mall. South Street Brewery is close to the mall and has one of my favorite local beers, Satan's Pony. The Whisky Jar on the mall is a must try. Good beer and large whisky selection. The serve local Virginia cuisine. I would also recommend Jack Browns Beer and Burger Joint, also on the mall.

So, this is where we ended up. All on the downtown mall.

Fitzroys: Great bar to sit at for drinks and appetizers or even dinner. Ordered a lot of seafood here and it was all good. Fun place.

Citizen Burger: If you can put up with the huge wait, they have really good burgers.

Whiskey Jar: Had a few drinks but we were the old farts in there.

Millers Bar: The 3rd floor of Millers is a classic dive bar. Pitchers of PBR, pool, and a very eclectic and welcoming crowd. And, for some reason, you could smoke on the third floor. (Which was not so good.)

Marie Bette: Bakery/breakfast. Huge wait. We didn't make the wait. But, the locals sent us there. Actually, this was not on the downtown mall.

Commonweath Restaurant and Sky Bar: Sky bar is a nice place to grab a drink and sit outside. Has outside heaters. Sunday brunch downstairs had a nice eclectic menu.

There were several other fine dining restaurants to choose from. But, we stayed more casual.

By campus we stopped at Trinity pub for a few cold ones. Definitely a college bar. Passable pub food.

Too bad you're not a wine drinker. There are several very good places in the area and one owned by the President-elect and one named after our third President.

Not the right trip/company for wine stops. I have no doubt there are some good options in that region.
