A major project underway across from the Ping Center and no it isn't the IPF. New dorms are being built along with a closure of the street that runs in front of Nelson Dinning Hall. The parking lots across from Ping will be the first round but future rounds include building a dorm in the Morton Hall parking lot to glue East Green and South Green together.

I think this is going to be really huge for the school and the campus.

Right now, College Green is our major area where you see students of all different walks together. I think this dorm really will tie South and East Green together with the athletics along the river AND the beautiful stretch of green space that wraps around from Morton towards New Baker. That area of campus was my favorite, but it felt a little unconnected and empty at times. If South/East tie into that area connecting to the academic buildings on West next to Richland along with Baker I think that area could potentially become an area like College Green that students will always remember as a "green" on campus.

I am very excited to see how the campus looks after this round of projects is done.

edit:

After looking at the picture in that article, its clear they are trying to create a greenery walkway along that stretch. Awesome.
Are they planning on rebuilding the "deep south" dorms they are demolishing, or will they just make that green space and push students into these new dorms being discussed here? I think that would be great. It makes the campus a bit more compact while still keeping it full of green space and "greens."

From an athletics standpoint, I think this could have a huge impact on getting kids to go to football and basketball games. These dorms aren't just closer to the stadiums, but they make the stadiums feel closer. This REALLY ties the campus together.

The new dorms are going to look very impressive from the highway as a front entrance to campus and will be done in 2015 with dirt moving already. It has long been a goal to build the campus together and move away from the smaller dorms on new South. The deep south dorms are going to be replaced with larger dorms of a smiliar style to what is built across from Ping with Nelson Commons more the middle of that area than the edge. The total number of dorm rooms is going to stay the same but its more about having suite housing. It makes the campus appeal more to an urban living space when its built together. Parking though is going to be pushed to the perimeter of campus.

Thats a crying shame. I lived on New South, and it was glorious! The majority of my close OHIO friends to this day remain Mod-Mates.

I'm actually very excited about this and think this is great news!

One, I think this needs to be done as New South is in DIRE need of a MAJOR upgrade.  New South may have been nice in the day (former Crawford Hall resident myself) but it's old and tired.  I've stayed in New South when they opened up one of the vacant dorms for a Dad's Weekend two years ago and I was shocked at how bad the dorm and outdoor sidewalks had gotten.  It was not in great shape.

Secondly, Ohio needs to do this if it is to remain competitive with other universities in the battle to attract new students.  I've just finished touring other universities with my youngest daughter on the proverbial college tour and I can tell you, other universities have really upgraded the dorm experience for their students and really have made living in a dorm much nicer than just living in a 4-sided cinder block.

So Ohio's doing the right thing and like the Optimist, I can't wait to see the final product!!

Same here. Great memories & friends made in the New South dorms. Bummer they've turned to crap, but I assume it's all in the name of progress. I can't help but think the fact that in some of those rooms you could touch three walls at the same time, is part of the reason, not just that they're falling apart.

Anyone know if there will be a way to snag a couple bricks? Would be kind of neat to get one from Smith & Atkinson from my first couple dorm years.

Poor planning, I guess, in terms of the original design of those dorms.

It is just that society has changed. Before social media, before computers, before anything more than a bed and desk were all you needed, this was a great idea, perfect layout. The common areas of New South were perfect for bonding with people. These rooms were created before every room had to have cable, and internet. Times have changed, but I think those bonding moments and ideas are what South Green is about. In reality, I'd like to think it is part of Ohio University.

The construction was just not what it needed to be maintenance costs are excessive.

Bert the design of the new dorms is going to incorporate areas and concepts that will encourage students to get out of their rooms and interact with each other. There may even be opportunities for faculty in residence. A great deal of thought and planning is going into making sure the bonding you talk about is strongly encouraged.

My point is there are many older dorms that do not have the quality ties of the New South Dorms

So after all new south dorms are gone, is the Mod layout going to be extinct?  I always thought that was the best setup - Privacy of mostly individual rooms but camraderie of the small shared lounge/bathroom.

+1000, but yes the "powers that be" are out to kill the Mod format.

The mod experience is entirely defined by the people living in it. My year in True House was fairly miserable, but I had a great time in Perkins Hall with a traditional setup.

My understanding is that the new buildings will be more like Bromley -- shared bathroom between two rooms. I heard this on a recent campus visit, but could be mistaken. We visited UC and Xavier this summer, and, both are using a similar approach for rehabbed/new buildings.

I liked the idea of relatively small dorms, but think these have to be much more costly to operate -- infrastructure/upkeep, utilities and staffing. With everyone being individually wired and even wireless, I wonder how much our students today want shared social space like the mod.

Based on my ancient experience, I agree with JSF's assessment. It's the people with whom you share the space that make the experience. Back in my day, each building had a personality. Some were known be more raucous and others quieter. Most folks self-selected and it worked out pretty well.

The new dorms will be anything but traditional. They will incorporate shared living space (doubles) with semi private baths and communal space that will encourage students to mix with each other. As I said before there may even be an apartment to accommodate facility in residence.

There has been significant student input, including student visits to other universities.

That shared bathroom thing has been overrated IMHO.  When I step in something while half asleep I prefer to have some idea about its origin.

I do agree with that, but the size of the rooms forced social interaction.

That was my 1st thought as well. They will have office space as well, but man that math seems funky!
