I don't know if it was just because of homecoming, but the amount of trash on Court Street Saturday night was a disgrace.

#1 can everyone quit being such incredibly lazy inconsiderate slobs?  Pick up your shit.  And has the courthouse always been the default "eat your chipotle and leave the remnants all over the steps" location?

#2 can the city or the storeowners try a little harder to get the trash emptied, especially on a big weekend like homecoming? every damn can looked like it hadn't been emptied in weeks.  It was an embarrassing scene.  This is your school, it's your campus.  Treat it like someplace where you'd WANT to live.

I have noticed this, too. The campus hasn't been looking too great lately. I haven't noticed careless litter as much as I have noticed overflowing trashcans outside. It's embarrassing to see large campus tour groups go by .

Classrooms are dirty due to budget cuts.  I would imagine the greens outside are dirty for the same reasons.  Court Street? That is because the City of Athens is a joke.

Of course, the students are there every weekend. If Court St. is exhibiting extra litter on HOMECOMING weekend compared to other weekends, isn't it indicative of ALUMNI misbehavior?

For the record, I graduated in 2005 and was there this weekend (uptown Friday night only.)

For a number of years, I've said that some of our students have the following slogan:

"Think Globally, Trash Locally."

I read this thinking it was going to be about the topic of this thread, instead it was the strongest piece of "get off my lawn" I've ever read.

http://www.athensnews.com/ohio/article-38181-good-thing-obama-didnrst-see-our-trashy-post-homecoming-city.html

On the topic of this thread and going along with her point...  Uptown was still trashed when Obama came.  I am not sure that the city has actually emptied the trash cans on Court Street.  Thank god Mayor Wiehl was re-elected.

I think the message of Keep America Beautiful was lost on this generation. I remember my dad taking me to task over throwing a candy wrapper out the window. Never did it again. MY kids have felt that wrath and understand it is wrong.

Though the next gen might automatically recycle and care in a way there is a large segment of the gen that just trashes the place. Many times on my way back and forth to OHIO I am passing a car that opens a window and throws out the garbage. Pulling alongside I note that it is invariably young folks.

The other day I was waiting in the drive up line on the way to work when the care behind me empties their trash on the green patch of grass that makes up the pull around to the order speaker. After I ordered I put the truck in Nuetral, Got out, walked back and picked up the trash and looked at the young lady who watched me pick up her bag of fast food trash and several cups she had tossed and walked away placing it in my truck bed to throw away later. It really is endemic and has been steadily increasing this last decade. I am with DFC as I have often walked down Court to see kids too lazy to walk 8 feet to the nearest trash receptacle and just toss whatever is in their hand on the ground.....I usually yell up to them and pick it up and throw it away while saying " Hey, that's ok I'll get it".

Good for you, Doc Freeman!!!  I really admire that spirit.  More of us old farts should follow your example.  I'll try to.

I don't know if this is better or worse, but I remember getting back to tailgate park after the homecoming game... there are now many trash receptacles throughout the park, and they all have recycling containers right next to them.  Then what do I see... plastic bottles in the freaking trash.  It's not like the recycling bin was 8-feet away; IT WAS RIGHT THERE.  Why are people so dim?

At least there's a recycling option. They don't do it here. Drives me mad.

You'd love CT. Many places (everywhere at work for me) have bins for paper, plastic/aluminum, compost, and waste.

I'm sorry, but at least the bottles were in the trash AND NOT ON THE GROUND/IN THE BUSHES/IN THE RIVER. Try to keep some perspective.
