Here in New York, the state of Ohio's very aggressively advertising to try and convince New Yorkers to move to Ohio.

I don't think it's working though. From what I understand more people move out of Ohio each year than move to Ohio.

I think maybe “grandma” should be a little more cognizant that perhaps her granddaughter has school work to do.

Also, not sure as it's been a while, but pretty sure she's facing the wrong way down a one way street?

Grandma picks up and drops off at class gate on E Union across from front of old Baker Center, now Schoonover, not facing wrong way and not a one way street. Thanks for posting, good to hear Athens/OU's Caamp providing the soundtrack.

Actually there has been rather large influx of New Yorkers to Ohio lately. While Florida gets all of the headlines with the large number of New Yorkers as well as their businesses that have relocated to the Sunshine State, Ohio has done quite well. I noticed lots of Illinois plates lately and was told by folks in the Higher Ed world that Illinois' state pension system is a mess, which is why many folks from the Land of Lincoln are trying to find other states to moved to for pension purposes.

A little known fact is that there has been an under the radar surge of Orthodox Jews to Ohio, much of it having to do with fears of violence directed at them in NYC. Ohio Voucher program for private schools in areas near failing public schools schools is quite popular, especially in th Cleveland area. While in Cleveland for work, an Orthodox Rabbi explained to me that many in his synagogue came to Ohio from New York and northern New Jersey because they were sick of the violence, the high taxes, and feel the quality of life in Ohio was more in keeping with their conservative values and traditions.

Yes I know, Ohio is barely keeping pace with those leaving the state and there are only about 5-10 counties out of 88 that are growing. However, we are in a much better position than New York and Illinois. Intel's arrival, along with their various subsidiairies and suppliers can only help our situation.

I've lived in Ohio for almost 50 years, but the way things have gone and are going in Ohio, I wouldn't be moving here if I was young, nor would I be sending my child to college here, as the laws being enacted are extreme and do not represent the people of Ohio.

I encourage you to listen to the first story today on the New Yorker Radio Hour on NPR, about how extreme Ohio laws have become. Will be on demand.

Interesting narrative. I know it's a popular one. Can you support this narrative with data?

I live two neighborhoods away from the second largest Orthodox neighborhood in New York. I'm not aware of an increase in crime there, nor is my wife who works there. I know there's been a national surge in anti-semitic crimes -- something like a 160% increase year over year. In New York, my understanding is that the increase was well below the national average. Something more like 25%. Statewide, there were 51 incidents in New York. The increase in Ohio year over year was 100%, with a total of 50 incidents. Meanwhile, New York's population is nearly double Ohio's, so on a per-capita basis there are far more anti-semitic crimes in Ohio than in New York.

Previously, OCF and rp told me based on second and third hand info, that Midtown Manhattan is dangerous and you need to be armed. I work there and haven't noticed. Crime's increased, but below the national average, and from a baseline so low that New York's still the safest big city in the country by a wide margin. It's something like 59th in crime rate.

Perhaps what you're noticing is more off the geographic sorting that's been plaguing American Democracy for a while now. Conservatives moving to conservative places (or in Ohio's case, a moderate place that's governed in a gerrymandered, extreme way). I doubt that's a long term winning strategy for Ohio. I guess it's cool to be proud that some people moved from New York and Illinois to Ohio, but the state has a net loss every year. I also get the value of an Intel for Columbus, but states like New York don't have to celebrate such wins because their economic output's measured on a global scale. When Amazon went campaigning for an HQ2 and New York wouldn't give them tax breaks, they "went elsewhere". Except that they already had 60k employees and a 335,000 square foot office in New York that they paid a billion dollars for. Likewise, Intel has a big office in New York.

In other words, were I a betting man I'd still bet on the horse that lapped Ohio 39 times, even if it's pace has slowed.

I don’t believe I told you that. I think it was rpbobcat. I know all of us conservatives look alike! ;-) I told you that my daughter lives in Harlem and that while still relatively safe, it has gotten more dangerous recently. I very seldom venture into Midtown these days when in NYC. Last time I visited NYC I stayed in Harlem practically the whole time. She lives a few blocks from the Hamilton House on St. Nicholas.

You told me that I "lived in a different world than you and many others do" and said "In this case I trusted rpbobcat's observation." His observation was a second hand account that a cop he knows said you need to be armed to walk around in Midtown.

So it's not that all conservatives look alike. It's that your words whole heartedly endorsed what he said.

Glad you got the quote correct. Just trying for accuracy in reporting. So rpbobcat’s was second-hand, making mine third-hand. But, my observations about Harlem are first-hand accounts.

Nope. I don’t own any firearms.

Well, according to rpbobcat, that's the only way it's safe to be in Midtown Manhattan. So, I'm confused. Because that's the viewpoint you supported previously, and I was living in a different world.

Jews are being attacked at a level seen since 1979 the New York Times tells us. They aren't being attacked by white males who voted for Donald Trump, since outside of Staten Island few did. Do you really live in NYC? I mean I haven't been to the Big Apple since the Pandemic, but friends of mine in NYC who are Jewish and those who are not, tell me crime in general, and violent attacks against Jews in particular haven't been this bad in their memory.

Stub - your words are very true. Every morning when I open the Dispatch, I wonder what rights the folks in Columbus have voted to curtail or take away today.

I have friends in Illinois who are retiring from teaching and their pension program pales in comparison with what folks in Ohio have. If you're one of the lucky ones who retired on or before June 30, 2015, with 35 years of experience, you're receiving 88% of your highest three years gross.

As for the violence in the city, a dear good friend of mine is the president of his Temple. I'll ask him about that when we talk later this week.

That's the exact article that I pulled by data from. I then compared it to Ohio data. I thought the comparison was interesting.

You're only interested in your narrative. To each their own.

I've already discussed crime in New York with others here. It's up. But from a baseline that means even with the rise, crime is well below Cleveland or Cincinnati. And in line with Columbus. I'm constantly being told by people who aren't here how scary it is, and it's simply not.

A lot of people in America go out of their way to be scared of their neighbors. I don't get it.

Nope. I don’t own any firearms.

Well, according to rpbobcat, that's the only way it's safe to be in Midtown Manhattan. So, I'm confused. Because that's the viewpoint you supported previously, and I was living in a different world.

We’ll, I wasn’t in Midtown, I was in Harlem, which I described as relatively safe. Haven’t been in Midtown for several years.

I don't think it's working though. From what I understand more people move out of Ohio each year than move to Ohio.

I am not sure how we got here from Ohio Tourism, but I find your thesis and others who share your views as illuminating as it is troubling. Orthodox Jews, conservative Catholics, and Evangelical Christians tend not to be as influential, not as wealthy, and certainly not as woke as those on the secular left. When they get attacked as has happened to Orthodox Jews, or buildings burned as has happened to Catholic and Evangelical pro-life pregnancy clinics, we have BLSS and his "New Math" tell us that it is not what it appears, even though the article I linked comes from the New York Times, hardly a bastion of conservative thought.

I seem to recall BLSS tell us in some bygone post that he employs hundreds if not thousands of employees. I am sure where he lives in Manhatten, security for the well-heeled is not a problem. Ever so I often, when I am a glutton for punishment, I turn on NPR. Lo and behold, they were stunned to find that Hispanics are making a big shift to the GOP, with crime being a big reason, along with the feeling that their social and religious views are being mocked by those who seem to go out of their way to legitimize age old Biblical admonitions.

I realize the well-heeled secular woke crowd is feeling their oats. However, don't be surprised when the unwashed (as G K Chesterton put it) make their feelings known at the ballot box. I mean when the Never Trumper David French says that the Democrats are wealthier and whiter than they have been in decades, and the GOP more diverse, you know something is happening.

I made a simple, logical point: your friend moved from New York to Ohio because of anti-Semitism, but the data shows anti-Semitism is as big a problem in Ohio. The math is cited. 51 incidents in New York. 50 in Ohio in the same period. 20 million New York residents. 11 million Ohioans.

What's new about that math? As I said, I get the narrative. I am more interested in data, so I asked about data. You answered with more narrative. To each their own, but it's not a conversation I'm particularly interested in.

Well, in the Navy on one ship my battle station was in a 8-inch naval gun turret.

In 2020, Ohio experienced the highest number of antisemitic incidents recorded in the State since ADL tracking began in 1979, according to new data from ADL (the Anti-Defamation League). And in nearby Pittsburgh, a mass shooting, which took place at the Tree of Life – Or L'Simcha Congregation synagogue in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh... the congregation, along with New Light Congregation and Congregation Dor Hadash, which also worshipped in the building, was attacked during Shabbat (Saturday) morning services on October 27, 2018. The perpetrator killed eleven people and wounded six, including several Holocaust survivors. It was the deadliest attack ever on the Jewish community in the United States.

Yes, a white nationalist stepped into a Pittsburgh synagogue and killed 11 Jewish worshippers. Before his shooting, Robert Bowers made clear in a social media post that he believed killing Jews would help block non-white immigrants from entering the United States and ensure the survival of "his white race."

Not New York. Pennsylvania. Seems like leaving NYC is a case of "moving the goalposts" because the conservative orthodox Jewish people in NY are a classic case of "politics makes strange bedfellows" as they are just as distraught about trump losing in 2020 as a guy in lower Mississippi named Bubba Joe with a rebel flag on his truck and a swastika tattoo. They need to get their heads out of their rear ends and stop siding with right wing nutjobs who want them all dead. Obviously they learned nothing from Aug. 11th/12th 2017 in Charlottesville, VA either.
