I know the art museum is a must see thing. Is the natural history museum in that area really cool? It's not free like the art museum. There is also a botanical garden in that area. The video of Great Lakes Science Center make it look like COSI in C'bus... like it's more for kids than adults. Other places we will probably go (besides the obvious Rock Hall visit): Cool downtown places (4th street comedy club, Playhouse area, etc) Little Italy (+ maybe the Conventry shops incl. City Buddha, the Peru thing, the Candle making place which is not a huge big deal because I made my own double-boiler to pour my own candles here at the house when I get motivated to) but if their candles are as good as the ones from Amish country in Ohio, then I might buy some. Westside Market and nearby brew houses. That monument in the middle of downtown to the WINNING side of the civil war since I get tired of seeing all the tribute crappola to the butt-hurt loser side in the area where I live. As far as visiting the quint little towns like Chagrin Falls, that might have to wait for another Cleveland trip. Currently showing special exhibit titled Notorious RBG. Museum is on Richmond Rd. near Shaker Blvd. Very fond of Little Italy. My favorite restaurant is Tratoria On The Hill. Both of my parents were Jewish immigrants from Europe, thus I already know the heritage stuff cold since I grew up around it. As far as stopping in at the Hungarian bakery in Ohio City for some authentic dobosh torte? That's an absolute must. There will probably end up being a second Cleveland trip eventually. Huzzah, huzzah! That is one great Civil War monument -- one of the best in the nation. It was designed by Levi Schofield, who also, among many other memorable projects, was the architect for what was then known as the Athens Lunatic Asylum. The folks who work in museum that is in the base of the monument are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Don't hesitate to ask them questions. One interesting bit of trivia is that Schofield designed the monument so that he would have a good view of it from his office in nearby office building. Enjoy! The NFL draft may have motivated places to open back up. Is it safe to walk back to the Westin from Hilarities on a weekend night? I tried to ask on Reddit if Great Lakes and Market Garden were still doing .10 beers if you show your proof of vaccinations and their system immediately blocked the post. What a bunch of wimps. I haven't been but I heard good things. It is walking distance from Little Italy... The neighborhood that the Westside Market is in (Ohio City) and bordering neighborhood (Tremont) have a number of trendy bars and restaurants. They did a very nice job on remodeling the park immediately next to the Rock Hall. It's right on the lake (Voinovich Bicentennial Park) and I believe George Voinovich was a Bobcat? Edgewater Park which is just a little west of Downtown is also very nice. Covid has really gutted the West Side Market, making it a bit of a sad shell of its former self. Even before Covid, it was struggling as fewer people were shopping there and more were treating it as a tourist destination and the city mismanaged it to hell. Some of the best vendors are gone, and there's a lot of vacancy. Still a lovely space and well worth the trip, but not what it once was. And there are no less than seven breweries within a mile, including Great Lakes (know commodity), Hansa (decent and with a great European market attached), Nano (same owner as Market Garden), Market Garden (solid lineup), Bookhouse (great space, hit-and-miss beer), Forest City (great space, crap beer), Brick and Barrel (cool spot near the river but for hopheads only). If you're really into beer, I recommend Noble Beast on Lakeside and Masthead, which is nearby and also downtown. Two underappreciated good spots. Speaking of downtown, it's been crushed by Covid. Michael Symon's Lola is closed permanently among other fixtures on E. 4th. Downtown in general is pretty dead, as it relies heavily on events and office workers. So calibrate your expectations accordingly. When I saw the picture of the dobosh torte at Farkas, I instantly proclaimed "bazdmeg"** because I certainly won't get one like that in Nashville. **this word is not safe for the workplace especially in Budapest or some parts of Cleveland. I do remember hearing it used by my mother if she dropped an egg in the kitchen while making a cake when I was a kid growing up. Interesting tidbit on Hansa. They were going to be the U.S. brewer of Laško (the biggest beer in Slovenia) because the owner is Slovenian and wanted to add a brewery to his Central European store. After they bought all the equipment to do the brewing (including all controls in Slovenian), Heineken bought Laško and ended the deal. So the American brewers had to figure out how to make all their beer on a Slovenian system with Slovenian controls. In the end they figured it out but it was quite a curveball. Hansa has pretty good beer and serves a few great Slovenian dishes alongside solid Hungarian and German dishes. Tremont has gentrified a lot in the last 30 years, but it's not crime-free by any means. I'd personally feel fine strolling around in daylight - in fact, it is a great way to enjoy spots like Lincoln Park and discover little bars, shops and restaurants that you would miss in a car. That said, there is an element that preys on the moneyed suburbanites and tourists who go to enjoy those very things, particularly after dark. I wouldn't call it an unsafe area per se and I still go down there at night plenty of times. Just be aware of your surroundings. It is far from some urban hellscape, but there have been a number of disturbing incidents like carjackings in recent years. The "mind your surroundings" advice for Tremont stands for Ohio City and Gordon Square as well. As for pizza, Crust is good, but if you want classic Neapolitan, try Citizen Pie (W. 25) and for what I think it a perfect marriage of NY and Italian style, go to Il Rione in Gordon Square (W. 65). I'm usually in this area with a group, but I've never felt unsafe-even after dark. Crust is located right in the middle of a number of restaurants and bars that are going to be pretty heavily frequented on your typical weekends. Just be mindful of where you park and be aware of your surroundings. It's good to know they seem to have addressed the carjackings... That was a stain on an otherwise nice area. I've seen crazier things happen. It's nice that it's full of tourists on a Saturday, but it's losing vendors at an alarming clip - particularly those selling actual groceries. I'm glad that people enjoy the space and get their smokies or brat sandwiches for a stroll, but the very thing that makes the place cool is fading away. In just the last year, at least five vendors have left, including Old Country Sausage (authentic German meats), Dohar (Hungarian) and assorted produce vendors. At some point, it'll just be a beautifully made building offering nothing but a few things featured on the Food Network for tourists who only visit on Saturdays. Don't just take my word for it. I will confirm that the Cleveland Museum of Art is amazing and world class. As a person who spent many years in the music business, I can also confirm that the (cough-cough) "Rock & Roll" (cough-cough) "Hall of Fame" is not in the same universe as the CMA. Not to mention the CMA admission is $0.00 and not $28/per. I would not mind paying the $28 or even double that if the RRHOF was all that it was cracked up to be. But it's not. Luckily for them, there are enough housewives and grandmothers from Dubuque and Peoria who are easily amused by a video footage loop of Elvis, showing scenes everybody in the world already saw a hundred times on every Elvis documentary on every cable channel in history... and footage/displays of non-rockers like Whitney Houston, rap, etc. (While having nothing about Queen, almost no Lez Zep and lots of other legends of rock left mostly or totally out). I emailed them a note saying that the place was borderline appalling and the note I got back from somebody claiming to be a museum curator misidentified bass player John Paul Jones as the person who wrote "Stairway to Heaven." Luckily the CMA didn't confuse Georgia O'Keeffe for Salvador Dali.
