It hurt when he left, especially where he went, so I don't root for him because I just can't root for State. But he's a good guy. And he's been here before since he left, in the stands during a spring alumni game, supporting his former players. And he may be the only coach who's ever been on this message board, when he sent farewells and best wishes when he was leaving. We lost 3-1. Decent crowd considering it was barely mentioned. Both teams played their regulars throughout. We played well in set 1, up until it was 24-19, then preceded to lose the next 7 points and set 1. Still in shock from that I suppose, they came out and lost the 1st 8 points of set 2 (that’s 15 straight points). They did come back but were too far behind. They then outplayed State to win set 3 but lost the next one. It seemed the outside hitting was way ahead of the rest of the play.- digging, setting, blocking. It’s early and recruits not here yet. Carlston looked good, relaxed, but still animated even in this exhibition game. I hope this becomes an annual match with them, unless we get to play in the regular season which would be even better. p.s. Still remember a sign at St Johns Arena when we swept them to advance to the Sweet Sixteen: One side said “ We’re OHIO. You’re State”. The other side: “We’re Cats. You’re Nuts”.
