Great update on Joe Rock. The Rockies chose to send him to high-A to start the season, meaning he is bypassing low-A altogether. They also seem to view him as a starter as he started the 2nd game of the season for the Spokane Indians. He went 6 innings, giving up an unearned run, walking 2 and striking out 6.

He is positioned well to get a look at AA late summer if he can have success at high-A.

Thanks, Ted. Those are great stats. If he can keep that up over a greater number of games and innings, I would think a higher minor league would be calling before too long.

4 starts. Made it into 5th-6th inning each start. 22IP, 29K and only 7BB. If he keeps that up folks will notice.

Had his first bad outing 5/28, rocked for 8 earned runs in 5 1/3. Still struck out 7.

Came back out last night and threw 7 scoreless, just 1 hit, 2 walks and 9 strikeouts. The organization will be glad to see that kind of bounce back ability.

Yes, bouncing back from a bad outing is very important. The alternative is to go into a slump, which is often more mental than physical.

Rock was recently named the Hottest Pitcher in the Rockies organization for July by MLB.com

Rock hits this list for the second time this season after posting a 2.79 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP in five starts this period. He spanned 29 innings and allowed just 17 hits, while striking out 32. It was a nice turnaround after a rough May, which puts Rock's season ERA at 3.73 for the year with 78 K’s and a .198 BAA in 72 1/3 IP. He’s in the top four in the High-A Northwest League in strikeouts, BAA and WHIP (1.07), and top seven in ERA.

Unfortunately, Joe got lit up on Wednesday night. 5 innings, 8 earned runs, 10 Hits, 3 BB, 4 K. A lot of the damage was in the 6th inning which he started but did not record an out.

He has gotten a little wild in the last month or 2. 15 walks in his last 25 innings. Previously 25 walks in 78 innings. BB/SO data is huge in the evaluation of young pitching.

Well, the best of pitchers have slumps just like hitters. I think he’ll snap out of it and return to form.

Not sure what is going on but Joe has not pitched in 2 weeks. I don't see any reports of an injury and he is still active on the roster.

He pitched last night, he took the loss in one game of the DH. He went 4.2 innings allowed all 6 runs, all earned. Walked 4, struck out 5 and give up one dong. He's got a 4.43 ERA on the season.

More control problems. Needs to get to the offseason and reset. I thought he was heading for AA opening day 2023 but starting to think they keep him at High A to start.

First AA start...not great. 4 innings, 5 runs, 3 BB, 6 K. 4th inning got 2 quick outs then it went 1B, 2B, BB, HR. Turn that single into a ground out and it's a strong outing.

Well, at least he's moved up. It may take him a few games to adjust to the new surroundings and the tougher competition, but I'm encouraged that he's now at the AA level.

Another rough outing to finish out the season. 4 IP, 4 R, 4 H, 2 BB, 5 K. Unfortunately his AA stats are now etched on his player card for eternity - 2 starts, 10.13 ERA & 1.75 WHIP.

This will hurt him getting much respect from pundits out there but hopefully the Rockies see past that and still believe in his stuff. He ended up with more than 1 strikeout per inning which is encouraging for his stuff in general. Hone in the control a bit and he could still take off in AA in 2023.
