Brenden Roder has given up 17 runs in 4 innings. He did really well as a reliver so they moved him to starter where he struggled a bit last year. Starting to think he may be a reliver. Mason Minzey already with 3 homers on the season, impressive. Patino & Rausch also ripping the ball, 5 doubles each. I will say that metal bats are often the great equalizer early in the season so its obviously tough to predict where this staff will be come MAC play. A couple stats stick out to me thus far. Our pitching staff has only racked up 37 strike outs in 57 innings while our opponents have struck us out 62 times in 61 innings. That's not good. Need to get more swings and misses. The defense also needs to drastically improve. 12 errors in 57 innings. Free bases + lack of strike outs is a tough formula to win with. Pitching always seems to be the missing link in Ohio baseball history. We're always near the top in offensive categories but the pitching doesn't seem to balance out. Not hitting the panic button yet but would like to see some improvement during the weekend series', conference play comes fast in baseball. Hey at least it was only 7 runs this time... The walks aren't awful but man are these guys just getting absolutely shelled on the mound, like it is batting practice. I fear this will be a real struggle all season. That tells me that we are throwing the ball over the plate, which would suggest we are mechanically sound but lack velo/movement/command. The '23 Cats have a huge advantage over the Cats of the 90's. Walter Fieldhouse provides ample room to create game like situations including live at bats when the weather is less than ideal. I'm sure they were also able to get outside and scrimmage multiple times in Feb. Generally I'd agree that Southern teams are at an advantage early in the year, however, its not as big of a gap as you'd think. Maybe if you are talking the Michigan schools but Athens is pretty mild. In my experience, it is semi-loose and if someone really wanted to pocket one you could probably get away with it.
