Looks like Buffalo just got themselves a pretty good recruit in Jalen Harris. He's rated a 3 star PG and had offers from Providence, DePaul, Virginia Tech, and a handful of non-power 5 schools. He was also receiving interest from Kansas, NC State, Clemson, Wake Forest and Arkansas.

That's an interesting array of offers and interest.

Who really cares about stars outside of Duke, UK, KU, etc? How many stars was Nick Kellogg (avg. of 2.5). How about Big Reg Keely? (2), D.J. Cooper, probably one of the top 10 MAC players of all time was a 3 star. The MAC always comes down to which coaches find the under the radar guys. Something that Dambrot, Kent State coaches, Steve Hawkins and Keno Davis have excelled at. Hopefully Saul catches up.

I like the idea of Saul getting more 3-star guys than 2's, if for no other reason than it building a reputation for the program. That said, I agree that the number of stars doesn't really have any bearing on what they'll become in the long run.

I agree the stars don't mean much, but it's hard to argue that's not an impressive get for Buffalo, especially with Hurley now gone. I was thinking the offers he had on hand and the interest he was getting was important than the stars.

According to Verbal Commits Ohio has 5 offers made to the class of 2016 and 5 for 2017. All 10 offers are to 2 star recruits. Here's a list of all the other teams these 10 recruits have offers from, according to VC-

Bryant
Campbell
Coastal Carolina
Delaware
Duquesne(x2)
Eastern Kentucky
Fairmont State
George Mason
Green bay
High Point(x2)
Hofstra
Illinois State
IPFW
IUPUI
Longwood
Loyola(IL)
Marshall
Milwaukee
Northwood(x2)
Northern Iowa
Northern Kentucky
Robert Morris
Richmond
Rider
Urbana
UNC Asheville
UTEP
Winthrop
Youngstown State

Akron(x2)
Buffalo
Eastern Michigan
Kent State(x5)
Miami(x2)
Toledo(x3)
Western Michigan

Not having any high majors beyond a couple of A10 teams is one thing, but look at all the low majors we're competing with. We're going after multiple targets of schools like Northwood and High Point? Campbell, Fairmont State, Urbana, Rider??

This is an uninspiring list of schools we are competing against for recruits.

Yeah I've noticed this too perimeter. I have a feeling Saul is just looking for certain types of players, not necessarily the most recruited ones. I just hope he realizes that Ohio can probably attract better talent than when he was at NDSU. Then again, maybe he just wants to start from the bottom before he swings for the fences. It's tough to tell.

When Coach Phillips took the Ohio job, he said that after he drove around the campus he knew he'd be able to recruit higher caliber players than when he was at NDSU and he used Ryan Taylor as an example. Of course we know how that turned out.

On its face Saul's first recruiting class appears to be good and there aren't many spots available for the 2016 class. Maybe recruiting against other MAC schools was harder than Saul thought? I have faith and I think Saul will get Ohio were it needs to go.

I think Saul's first class is sensational. Gollon and Block are more athletic versions of the Kretzer/MacAdams combo at Akron and those two have been fantastic for what they do for Dambrot. After a year of seasoning and strengthening the knee Doug is going to be a beast. Dozier has some muscle to be added but has a nice frame and Dartis is a kid who just competes and plays the right way. Add in Carter for next year who is smooth and tough and Saul is bringing in "PLAYERS" not stars.

O'Shea had the same problem when he first started as he under estimated the talent level required to compete in the MAC and brought in marginal talent first couple class and set the program back a couple years. He then recovered nicely and added several outstanding players and returned the program into a contender. Groce came in and had an eye of Big Ten caliber talent and build a team that had players that had power conference skills, but mid major size. That being said Ohio recruits good people not just good players. They don't mess with the question marks off the court that say a certain school with a kangaroo for mascot may look at.

I'd say combine Groce's eye for bringing in guards with TOS' eye for bigs, and you're looking at a pretty nice collection of recruits.

I like Saul's current class a lot. I don't know a lot about future recruits, but if it's anything like this year's bunch, he'll do very well for Ohio.

I believe this lists the offers of recruits still on the table. I think that's how verbalcommits works. Therefore, you won't see Seth Towns' impressive offer list because he's already committed elsewhere even though we did extend him an offer.

Just curious, is the first SP group of recruits guys JC had in line? Or, are they guys SP identified?

Just like in football, I believe stars matter. It would be nice to get maybe one 3-star guy in b-ball each year.

I hope I am wrong but much like Groce, SP could really be loading up with this first class, have a ton of success by their senior year, and then he'll be gone and we are on to the next one...

Oh well, that's life in the MAC!

I talked personally with Saul not too long after he took the job here and asked him point blank if he meant what he said about staying here for the long haul, at least until his young daughter graduated from high school. I basically asked him if it was true, or just a bunch of B.S. He looked me right in the eye and said, "just watch me stay! I'm not the moving type." He then joked, well, I won't leave unless they fire me. I think you are misjudging Saul. He's a different animal from your average coach that looks on OHIO as a stepping stone. I really believe that was one of the reason Saul hired him. He wanted to stop the carousel coaching situation we had going. Color me naive if you want, but I believe Saul.

Casper, these are all Saul recruits. All of JCs recruits have bailed.

We can't forget transfers re getting high major guys. We already have two of them in Kaminski and Simmons.

I'm sure he believes everything he said to you but I find it hard to believe that he wouldn't seriously consider a Big Ten or ACC job if they came calling. Unfortunately, that's just the nature of the business and our lot in it.

JC was telling the truth when we said he wanted to be at Ohio for a while, then an opportunity he never thought would present itself did. Same goes for Saul, he truly believes with 100% of his heart that he will be here long term, BUT, if that too good to refuse offer comes along he'll do whats best for him and his family. Doesn't mean he isn't sincere today, just means things change.

VC shows all offers, when a player has committed or signed the others are listed as "other offers".

I agree with BC 98 here. The MAC is far more of a player development league, and I believe that's what Saul and staff will be good at. At the same time, I just don't buy a lot of the star ratings for kids, particularly outside of the top 75 or so. Also, it's gonna take some time for Saul to build up relationships in Ohio/midwest. I asked him at the coaching caravan in Cbus if he'd made inroads with former Bcats who are now coaching like Sonny Johnson and Kirk Lehman--both state championship coaches. He said yes, they were off to a good start, but there's a lot more relationship-building that has to be done before it gets to the point where they think "Ohio" first when recommending schools to kids...

By the way, look at one of Saul's mentors, Bo Ryan. Look how successful he's been with kids who are generally ignored by other top Big 10 schools. Marched through the tourney last year with a bunch of kids hardly anybody heard of in HS...

Frank Kaminsky- 3 stars. Interest from Ohio, no offer.
Caris LeVert- 3 stars. Offer from Ohio.
Trey Burke- 3 starts. Offer from Ohio.
Kendrick Nunn- 4 stars. Offer from Ohio.

We missed out on these recruits but was it a waste of time to go after them? Would that have contributed positively to our team if they had signed? I understand that rating don't mean everything and the MAC is a developmental league and blah, blah blah.. but that doesn't mean you don't even try to get a higher rated recruit once in a while. Make the effort.

Walter Luckett was the #1 rated recruit in the country and his first visit was to Ohio and he signed. You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

I guess it's a matter of defining "waste of time." As I recall, we were on Burke early, before he really developed into a top player. I wonder how much time we put into recruiting him once we knew he was interested in bigger/better things.

Certainly not a waste of time on LaVert, but can anyone on this board tell me that based on what they saw of this kid before March of his senior year that he would be this good? When I saw him play in Feb that yr, the only thing I could see was a very skinny, OK shooter who'd have to redshirt in order to put weight on.

An offer for Kendrick Young, a top #25 kid? Hell, why not. You wouldn't wish it on anyone, but maybe he injures a knee and a lot of schools back off--then, who knows. But all other things being equal, after offering him, and seeing the offers he was getting from the biggies, I certainly hope we didn't waste much time pursuing him.

Three or four years from now, after his first recruiting class graduates, I'd love to spend some time with Saul talking about how it all worked out in recruitment of the class. Kids he thought he'd get, but didn't (and vice versa)...the surprise at the end in Gollom, etc...

A 3-star recruiting choosing OHIO over offers from Baylor and Cal is hardly under the radar.

Maurice NDour choosing OHIO over offers from Cincinnati, Providence and St Johns. Again, that isn't what I call under the radar.

Kenny Kaminski was a 3-star with an offer from Michigan State among many, many other power programs. Had we offered and had he chosen OHIO over those programs, he wouldn't have been "under the radar" despite his 3 stars. If a coach in the MAC Was able to sign 4 and 5 star guys, he wouldn't avoid doing it because they aren't "under the radar."

VC shows all offers, when a player has committed or signed the others are listed as "other offers".

Yes, but if you go to our team page, you won't see Seth Towns listed.
