Observations from the 8th annual WI vs. MN Border Battle
01/28/2014, 4:00pm CST
By Mark Miller

James Gollon, 6-5, G, Jr., Pacelli
In his second game of the season after sitting out following hip surgery, Gollon came off the bench to score seven points for the Cardinals. His feel for the game, size and skill are going to be definite assets for Pacelli the rest of the way.

Interesting that we would target another wing player...

I've seen crazier things happen.

This kid looks like several of Saul's NDSU guys. Big guard who can shoot and attack the rim. He is very much like Gavin Block. I love this kid. I hope he signs. He reminds me of T-Wilk a bit as well. If we could get him then he already is an upgrade over Khari and Laster offensively. Didn't see his defense but Akron is solid with McAdams and Kreitzer. But with the attacking style of Block and Gollon we could put both out and have them sandwich Simmons, Kaminski and Tony and be just fine. Man are we gonna be exciting next year.

Those state are ridiculous. The kid is averaging 30 points a game and has multiple 45+ point efforts this season. At a glance very impressive.

So what are we missing this year? We are missing spot up shooters who can keep defenses honest with a drive on occasion. Welcome to Ohio University "missing pieces for next year" Mr. Gollon and Mr. Block. How are teams going to stop us with Block/ Gollon outside with Kaminski and then Tony inside and Jaaron driving to the hoop? Good luck.

Already an upgrade over Khari and Mike? How the heck are you so sure? He does show some nice things in his mixtape, but everyone's mixtape looks good. Unguided message board optimism like this is setting yourself up for disappointment.

Mike has zero outside shot and it was evident in his high school film. Khari the same..and let's not forget that while Ryan Taylor is mixed in with this statement, Mike, Ryan and Khari were all late addition guys who were not committed until they came to OU. There's a reason for this. I just stated that as a skill set, Gollon at least can shoot. When Mike comes in it's strictly defense. When Khari comes in it's as a 5th option on a kickout, nothing more.

I love Laster's game if he's our ninth man. I truly think he's a great 5 minute burst kind of player. And Khari probably would be a better D-2 player than someone starting in Saul's program. Watch next year when both have less minutes because Saul is getting "his" players. I know Mike is "his" player and as an energy guy was a great late pickup.

I just think too many people on this message board get too optimistic about high school seniors and forget that there is a HUGE learning curve. When NBA All-Star weekend still featured the rookie-sophomore game, it seemed the sophomores absolutely dominated the rookies every year. Same reason. Gollon could be a good player for us eventually, but he is pretty unheralded, so I'm not counting on him or any of our freshmen being any sort of missing link. And think about it - how many under the radar Ohio players have had a big impact in their freshmen year in recent years? In my 11 or so years of following Ohio basketball, I would say Leon Williams and Nick Kellogg... maaaaaaaybe Jerome Tillman.

And why are you so quick to dismiss Khari and be so high on James? When we watched Khari's high school tape, many on this board saw 6'8'' with some handles and range. Why is this guy's only offer New Jersey Tech? I was at the Miami game and yes, Will Sullivan burned him a few times, but you're crazy if you don't see some promise from Khari.

Definitely agree with 98 that this is a missing piece. I'm the guy that constantly obsesses about shooting ability, so I am excited when we add shooters, even if he is a bit under the radar and not heavily recruited.

Looks like his brother Jake just gradated from Mercer and was the leading scorer (20) in their NCAA tourney win over Duke last March. Struggled against us last season in Athens, just 1 shot in 26 minutes. Any one remember him?

Also, his sister is currently a Volleyball player at Mercer. Wonder if Mercer offered, and if not why not?

Welcome to Athens, James. Milk that Wisconsin-Ohio pipeline!

I thought Tillman was a 20+ scorer against what seems to be better competition than this guy is facing.

Two things about Tillman:

1) He had crazy high school numbers in a good high school conference but didn't get many offers I think largely because he did not play AAU ball, iirc. I think he still garnered an offer from USC.

2) He was not nearly as productive in his freshman year as Leon or Nick, though he was decent.

Reminds me of Jake Kretzer.

He's putting up some big #'s but 61-181 from 3. His stroke looks good so I imagine he's taking a lot of high degree of difficulty looks from deep (step backs & long range). He's an excellent free throw shooter which is generally a good indicator of someone who can be a good or great shooter.

This must mean the staff is content at PG with Simmons, R Taylor, & Dartis handling the ball handling duties.

Interesting pick up. Got to search out some game tapes.

Intersting adage regarding the late additions.

"last ones added are the first ones recruited over" No, it is not one of Tom Crean's mantras but it is a reality. If you are a late signee and someone better comes in next year you better find a way to get on the floor.

never argue with idiots, they bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Winter comes and asks how you spent your summer.....

The game loves and rewards those who love and reward the game

Yes, this is fourth year in college (He got his bachelor's degree in three years), but only third he's played, so he still has one to play one after this year. Many seem to think he won't be a scholarship player next year.

Most of our guys that didn't play a lot as Freshmen still put up good per minute stats. Tillman, Devaughn, Tommy, Ivo and Reggie, and Tony last year.

The problem is Laster and Harley should be role players this year not starters, but I agree that it is too early to write either of them off.
