Is it just me, and I admit I haven't researched this thoroughly, but it just seems to appear that everyone we offer has either very few other offer; no other offers anyone can find; can't find them on recruiting websites; or offers from no-names teams from much lower conferences/teams. On the other hand, last I closely followed JC and JG continually seemed to offer guys that had offers from either equal caliber or high caliber conferences/teams. We are either incredibly smart diamond hunters, or going after guys totally off the radar. I'm not smart enough to know....

I don't think you're correct about this, Chicken. Ryan Taylor didn't appear to have any offers but late he got serious interest from some bigtime programs. Some of the guys we have signed for next year had some nice offers from good programs. Some of the guys we have offered for 2016 have some other good offers.

Not saying all of the players we've offered have other strong offers, but many of them do.

To be sure, he learned ball playing under Bo Ryan. That wisky unit is not made up of top 100 recruits being courted by the acc, sec, big east and everyone else. I would expect nothing less.

To be sure Groce is in on most of those kids long before they are names. I remember sitting in Dayton looking at Nunn, tate and Hill playing for simeon as sophs and Groce saying he already had a relationship with the fams.

Guys like offutt and bassett he had been after since they were 8th graders. By the time most guys get to them Groce has already identified and been on them for a long time. It's not like he goes after a kid because 20 other schools had offered and he felt compelled to throw his hat in the ring.

I'm not sure waht sites you are using. Lots of info out there but you got to know where to go.

You guys are right--I jumped the gun. Saw a new post on Carson Willams with North Florida, Northwestern St and Samford. Another with Jacksonville State, and one where nothing could be found. Dug a little more on other guys and I start to see some names I respect and recognize. By bad. Scratch that. Guess I'm just bummed about this season and overly anxious about re-stocking and doing it again right.

Doug Taylor and Jordan Dartis had offers from some good MAC programs. Block had an offer from Northern Illinois among others. Gollon had an offer from West Point and a couple others--while West Point isn't known for good basketball, it's always good to have a kid on your roster who could have attended there and played in the Patriot League. Ellis Dozier had an offer from LaSalle, a good A10 program, among others.

2016 offers seem to be mostly to kids who have interest from other good programs.

I think there probably are a few guys that the coaching staff identifies that maybe don't initially have a lot of big-time offers. Certainly this class of freshmen was that way because there was no other option, but I think it is part of how Phillips recruits to some extent. I think he does offer some guys who are way under the radar. In some cases, other schools eventually key in those some players, too. But he certainly also goes after some more highly recruited players also.

To add to this, Taylor was getting looks from Iowa and VCU at some point. Also, ESPN is giving Taylor a 3-star grade at the time he committed:

Not to mention the offers to guys who didn't commit to Ohio and committed to big-time programs (Omari Spellman, Ryan Mikesell, James Bolden) or haven't committed anywhere yet, but are getting big-time looks (Seth Towns).

Truth be told, most of the guys who haven't committed yet that are on Ohio's radar have offers mostly MAC programs and the like. I think Saul needs to establish himself a little bit before he can truly swing for the fences.

I think people often underestimate how lucky Ohio got when Groce signed DJ in his first class. That was a huge get.

Saul got a couple of good ones in Simmons and Kaminski, I think. We just haven't been exposed to them yet.

JG's whole first class was full of good gets. Granted, only three stuck around, but they all would have been good players. I think Saul's first class will be somewhat similar. I still feel he needs another PG behind Simmons unless Dartis proves to fit into that mold.

With his only other major offer from Northwestern. Otherwise, it was mid-major programs in his area (Bradley, DePaul, Northern Illinois, Southern Illinois).

Because he went to Wisconsin. I'd bet a good amount of money he'd have been two had he committed to Bradley.

Point is, comparing a player's other offers is virtually useless. Look at some of the best players we've had and see what their other offers were. A lot had really unimpressive comparisons and we were their best offer.

"Virtually useless"?? In many cases, it gives some insight. But it's not failproof, as your examples show.

The signal to noise ratio is too unfavorable. The offers a player does or does not have doesn't really tell you if he's going to be good. There's just not enough useable information.

Sam Dekker, their number two scorer and 5 star recruit had offers from Milwaukee, NIU, Bradley, Northern Iowa, and Valpo (according to Verbal commits). No other big notables at least that VC shows.

Wondering if he was a 5 star before he signed with Wisconsin. If I recall Sonny Troutman was ranked as a top 75 recruit before he signed with us and then all of a sudden his ranking dropped like a rock.

HE was pretty good clear through jr high on. These are later in the recruiting process after the commits but you can see relative ranking vs his peers.

http://hoopniks.com/player-rankings/past-rankings/class-o.../

http://prospect-central.blogspot.com/2011/08/class-of-201...

http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/recruiting/rankin... number 13 in the top 150. He did not ascend to 13 above Perry Ellis, Cauley Stein, Niang and others based on his accepting a Wisky scholly

This is rather funny, If I get on the FB blog and start talking about 3-star recruits I am told we don't need them. In B-ball, everyone seems to want them...strange dynamic.

thaats because in bball there are only around 25 5 stars. 4 stars go down to the top 100 and 3 stars start there. There are 341 or so D1 schools needing 3-4 frosh a year. Do the numbers in hoops. How many 4 and 5 stars is OHIO or the MAC gonna recruit? For that matter take the lower half of ANY power conference school how many 4 and 5 star recruits are headed for a second tier team? Not sure now you get stars in FB but the number of schools playing top level FB is no where near 350ish

You can see the real impact of multiple coaching changes when you look at the list of players graduating in the next few years that played all 4 years in Athens.

2015- 1 (S. Taylor)
2016- 0
2017- 2 (T. Campbell, W. Mompremier)

just 3 four-year recruits in 3 years has its consequences.

MY STATE. MY TEAM.
