As we wait to find out the status of the 4 previously signed players, I was curious about any success Ohio has had with the late signing period in recent history.  I ignored transfers, just because they seem to come and go at any time, but I tried to grab all the JUCO and HS guys.  Maybe this is skewed because Ohio was successful in the early signing period, but it doesn't make me feel comfortable if we have 2-6 scholarships on our hands.

2014-TBD
2013-Harley
2012- Wilkins (JC)  <------------Christian's first year
2011- None
2010-None
2009-Baltic
2008- Waters, Dobbs  <-----------Groce's first year
2007- Hester (JC), BW IV (JC), Allen (JC)
2006-KVK
2005-Tillman, Ottrix (JC)
2004- Green (JC)
2003- Gladney (JC), Harbut (JC)
2002- Barrett (JC)
2001- Kiekow, Bridgewater  <----------O'Shea's first year

The signees in Groce's first year were not his, but the 2012 and 2001 guys belonged to Chrisitan and O'Shea respectively.  In fact, using the news feed on Ohio Bobcats, the spring of 2008 was interesting.
4-7-2008 Schaus named Athletic Director
4-18-2008 O'Shea signs Frankie Dobbs
5-23-2008 O'Shea signs Stacey Waters
6-23-2008 O'Shea resigns to take Bryant position
6-27-2008 John Groce named head coach.

Wouldn't Khari Harley be included in this group?

I think Waters and Dobbs came in before the 08 season but were part of the TOS regime that got held over wit Bacari and Townsend doing the recruiting on Waters and Rhodes/Ku taking a back seat to TOS on Dobbs. .I see you noted that in the write up

www.ohiobobcats.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/052308aaa.html

I had always heard Leon was a late season find by Kuwick but I see he signed his LOI in November with Fears.

This kind of confirms my fears that there is not really much out there at this point in the process. Most of the talent is likely either signed early or locked in with other schools already.  I understand we have to field a roster, but unless he can find a gem out there, I'd almost rather see Saul eat a couple scholarships next year and take our chances with what we got.  Then use the scholarships on more quality players after a full year of recruiting.

I don't know what list you're looking at, but I'd love to snag another Tillman/KVK/Baltic. If there are guys like this still out there, then let's get them.

I guess you can always get lucky, but there's probably a reason why most guys aren't signed at this point. If you can get another Tillman sure go for it, but most likely you end up with a juco.  With the number of scholarships we might have left once the dust settles, I'd still prefer to hold a couple scholarships back for next year instead of signing 4-5 guys in the late signing period.

I think this screams that there isn't a ton of HS low hanging fruit. Have to get creative. Tillman didn't play AAU ball as I remember it. KVK was international. some really good Juco finds in that group (green, harbut, delvar, Wilkins) but Juco doesn't seem to be the way Saul leans based on what I have heard from him.

This is why I am excited about the prep school kid getting interest from Michigan. Go after some kids that have a bit of a weird story. Would love a random international kid.

Borna, as I remember the Leon story he was a late summer find and we didn't offer until very late, but before the fall signing day. Testing my memory but I seem to remember that his AAU team never ever passed it to the post and he just was getting overlooked.

I'm still baffled by the Harley signing. Why rush to fill the scholarship left open by a shooting guard with another undersized, underdeveloped forward that had no other D1 offers, wasn't even on Ohio's radar and wasn't capable of playing right away? According to Harley his first contact from Ohio was just a few days before he signed and it sounds like it was all done over the phone. If he's going to sit out a year anyways why not recruit him like normal and keep your options open? With only 13 scholarships to give it seemed rather careless. I'm not saying don't give him one, I'm just saying why rush to give him one when he can't play right away and nobody else is recruiting him.

That is what I think happened for sure. Leon was at the Orlando tourney the last day of the open eval period when Ku spotted him

There are some kids out there. One of the Muncie Central kids... a 4 that can guard and stretch  the perimeter sat out his jr year as a transfer from Marion then sprained an ankle before the open eval period and sprained the other 6 games into his senior season 4 nites after putting up 8 treys in a game. He made it back for the last game before the sectional while the team dropped 11 of 14  games without him. Once he was back rthey went on a tear winning the sectional andmaking the regional final. I suspect he is going to grab a D2 ride at Findlay and be a bargain for them.

There are a few of them out there still....just flipping rocks and finding those who have gone through stuff is truly an art form of it's own.

I am not sure I would not bank a few and get started early on the next class. Would not be bad to find a 5th year senior to shore things up. ,,,,AND there are always guys who screwed around their freshman and soph years then realized they needed to buckle down and study and get their SAT scores and grades and took till now to know if they will qualify. A few of those pop up every year about this time.

This list doesn't seem to include D-1 transfers like Walt Offutt and Jon Smith who were both added in the late period. The transfer list is growing bigger and bigger every year. I would be surprised if we didn't take advantage of that with so much playing time available.

Yeah I left them off, but we have had significant transfers in during the late periods.  Most (except of course for the hardship/graduated) will sit out though, and not contribute on the floor next year.

The list doesn't look that bad when you consider most of our scholarships are not open to this point.  I'd say the hit/miss ratio is pretty comparable to if you did the same exercise for the early commits.

Of that list, I'd say at least half to two-thirds of the players on it ended up being solid contributors here.   I'm in agreement with those that say hold back a couple for next year when coaches will 1)  have lots of playing time up for grabs, and,  2)  have time to prepare to go after higher caliber players searching for a "fit" for what they want to do.

At this point, I think keeping Wiggington is key because it doesn't create desperate needs at any specific position.   Otherwise, if he leaves, finding a wing is going to be very important.

I'd agree on the hit/miss ratio.  My concern is the "hits" are more dramatic on the early guys in my opinion, and the volume of late guys we may need.  I'm interested to see SP's strategy, which may be just a one time thing to stablize a roster (perhaps more JUCO's than he'd like).   Here's the early signees that I could pin down:

2014-Crute, Morillo-Lajara, Owens, Wiggington
2013-Campbell, Mompremier, Ndour, Wingfield
2012-Levert
2011-Taylor, Mitchell, Goard
2010-Hall, Jacobs, Keely, Kellogg
2009-Cooper, Horne, Keely, Kinney
2008-Coleman
2007-Freeman, Nagtzaam, Pearson, Washington
2006-Sayles
2005-Chatman
2004- Fears, Williams
2003-Annen, Troutman, Davis, Clemons
2002- Guzman, Halbert, King, Kregers
2001- Shorter (I think, I couldn't find much...not sure if Frank Richards and/or Serge Babo were in this class).

It's true that most players who could have signed by now have done so, but not all have. There are still three ESPN top 100 guys not signed. Some guys just take longer to make up their minds or maybe want more information before they make their decisions. Also there will guys like Owens who get out of their LOIs and could be recruited.

I think you meant to put "Hall, Jacobs, Kellogg, Johnson" for 2010.

I hear you.  But, if the program takes a flyer on a kid every few years that seems fine.  Here we are a year later with many open scholarships.   It doesn't seem to be hurting us.  If we did this too often though that would likely be trouble.

Man, look at all the attrition on the above lists....
