Does anyone know if Juanita Robinson in fact signed and is coming to play on the women's team.  Hoopgurlz  on ESPN lists her as having signed, and they rate her as a  four star with a rating of 92.  I have seen no announcement of this on the official website or mention here. there was an announcement of five signees.  This sixth signee makes the women's recruiting class very substantial.  Anyone knowledgable about Juanita and her status with respect to Ohio?

Don't know, but if true, that would be sweet. I do know Coach Randall recently added a 6'4" freshman from Maryland.

From last year's 10 players, she returns her young base including 5 players who played in their first season, plus 2 sophs. And to that she adds her best recruiting class by far:

Porsha Harris-6';  led Juco team to NJCAA national championship (32-1). Listed as 9th best jr. college player in nation (Collegiate Girls Basketball Report)

Mariah Byard- 5'10"; WV POY as a junior; Gatorade POY as a jr; 3 star recruit led team to 2 state championships; 54th best pt guard in nation (ESPN)

Kat Yelle-5'7"; 1st team all state Illinois

Jenna Curry- 6'2"; 1st  team AA all state WV

Ellen Smith- 6'3"; led conference in blocks and fg%; led Dayton Lady Hoopsters to AAU state championship

The future for women's (and men's) hoops looks very bright!

By my count , 7 coming back on scholarship, five new recruits previously announced LOI's, and the new freshman from Maryland gives us the max of 13 schollies.  Not sure where, or if Juanita fits in.  It is possible that ESPN Hoopgurlz has  it wrong.  Pretty big mistake for them to say a 4 star has signed a letter of intent with Ohio, if that is not the case.  Do you have a name or high school for the 6'4" Marylander?  I must agree whether ESPN has it right or not, the women Bobcat team are getting a huge infusion of talent!!  Way to recruit!!

How did we  go from recruiting nobodies to pulling in what looks to be good talent?

A couple things pertaining to the two previous posts by Bobcat Debate 73 and JSF:

I don't know anything about the recent Maryland recruit, other than she's 6'4".

Upon re-checking the roster, OHIO ended up with 10 players, with only two seniors. So with 8 supposedly returning, plus 5 early recruits and 1 late recruit, we're one over the scholly limit, and that's without 4 star Juanita Robinson who ESPN said is committed to us. So the only possible scenarios I see are 1. someone (or ones) is not returning; 2; some recruit(s) is not coming; 3. someone is coming w/o a scholly. Strictly a guess, but given the turnover in the past, I'll guess someone is not returning and also that ESPN has it wrong.

Regarding the question "How did we  go from recruiting nobodies to pulling in what looks to be good talent?". Well, it's true the team had a dismal year, but I wouldn't call last year's class 'nobodies', and they did start to put it together at the end of the year with a 30 point win against Miami to end the season, followed by a solid road win at NIU in the MAC tourney, and a tough loss to perenniel power BG in Cleveland.  Last year's recruits include Benson who averaged 8 pts at UC as a true freshman before transferring here (also 1st team all-state OHIO); Howard, a transfer from UMass who was 1st team all district at Col. Africentric;  Robinson, district POY last year and 1st team all-state at Canton South. These were the 3 major contributers last year although Bailes, a 1st team W.V. select, showed up in the huge road kill against NIU by scoring 23 pts. in 24 minutes.

If the new recruits live up to expectations and blend with the returning young players, OHIO will be the surprise of the MAC next season

Sorry for my lack of knowledge on the woman's game .  I assumed the women had the same number of schollies as the men.  Not so according to a friend that follows the game far more closely than I.  According to him and, confirmed by that impeccable source Wikipedia, the women get 15 scholarships.  So, theoretically, Juanita and the late recruit could both be coming.  My friend also has some doubt about the ESPN report on Juanita, and believes they might have somehow confused her with Yelle.  It is odd that if, as reported by ESPN, she signed a letter of intent with OHIO, that it would not have been reported, indeed, touted on the official Bobcat athletice site with a broadly circulated press release.

I believe the Maryland recruit being discussed is 6'3" Samantha Buls from Linganore H.S. near Frederick MD.  Some on this board will remember her dad, Dick Buls, played for Ohio in the early 80s...Samantha averaged 13 and 13 her senior year.

This sounds right, brucecuth.   A March 31, 2011, story in the Maryland Gazette, about her selection to the All-Gazette girls BB, reflects her committment to Ohio.  She is listed in some articles as 6' 3"in Dec., one 6'"4 in Jan and one as 6'5"in March, so she either grew or someone needs to calibrate their tape measures.  Either way, Coach Randle is doing an excellent recruiing job.   What follows is an extract from the hyperlinked Gazette.

"Samantha Buls

Linganore, Sr., C

One of area's premier post players, averaged just over 13 points, 13 rebounds per night. Committed to Ohio University."

For what it is worth, if Juanita Robinson was ever coming to OHIO, she now has signed with Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas.  Maybe she will be recruited to OHIO down the road.
