He definitely had a happy demeanor during the scrimmage. And took a ton of photos afterward. Kinda got the feeling it was his swan song. His throws, though. Yikes.

This is also an indictment on not getting an incoming freshman quarterback. Normally I'd say having three scholarship QBs in their second year or greater plus a true freshman ought to be enough in the QB room. One starts and you trust your freshman recruitng that the others can be prepped for emergency backups. But with how easy it is to transfer, Harris bolts and you're left with Wither and Winters with probably fewer spring reps than you'd ideally want them to have

Interesting portal name today. Brendan Sullivan, QB, Northwestern. Grad w2. Same story as Tyus. Seemingly fell out of favor once Fitzgerald was fired. 140 rating last year.

Bradley Weaver, John Motton and Toby Adensaya all hop in today. Again I have no idea how you plan and coach in this environment? Ohio's punishment for being talented I assume?

It’s pure insanity. Nationally, there seems to be a rush of portal kids who transferred in for Spring ball re-entering the portal to find somewhere else for fall. Just crazy.

I stopped trying to understand this stuff a while ago, but he didn't play more than a snap or two until 2022. Maybe they're considering all of that multiple redshirt years?

2020 - COVID
2021 - Official Redshirt?
2022 - Freshman
2023 - Medical Redshirt?
2024 - GRADUATE SOPHOMORE????
2025 -
2026 -

https://247sports.com/player/cj-harris-46078909 /

I think this is it. They seem to have changed the way they label athletes, and the label is now related to Academic class, not the traditional athletic class. Under the old labeling system, he would be listed as a "Redshirt Sophomore", i.e. a player who has used his Redshirt year, and who has three years to play. That would have been true regardless of his academic progress in school. Now, since he has already earned his diploma, he's called a "Graduate", but that doesn't affect the fact that he has 3 years of eligibility left. I don't care how they label people, but the problem is that it makes it confusing for fans as there is no longer a way to know how much eligibility each player has left without researching each player.

Harris is obviously a bright, hard working young man, as well as a good quarterback. I'm sad to see him leave, but it's such a common thing anymore that you become desensitized to it after awhile. I wish him luck wherever he ends up, and I hope that whatever health issue he had is behind him now. That said, Ohio needs to move on and find a replacement.

It's clear that being a successful coach in this era is going to take different skills than being a successful coach took 10 years ago. What skills will be the most important? People skills, to keep players happy and motivated? Recruiting skills to be able to identify and recruit replacements for those who leave? Fund raising skills to be able to raise a stack of NIL money? Organizational skills, in being good at juggling the ever changing group of players and assistant coaches that you work with? An indefatigable attitude, so that no amount of personnel changes wears him out?

Where will this end? That's easier to answer, I think. It will end when too many players who leave end up with no chair in this modern version of musical chairs. Right now is a special case, though. Because of changes, there are probably 35% more players in the system now competing for each spot than a few years ago, and not all of them will get to play as much as they would like. How do I compute that? Under the old system, each player had 4 years of eligibility, and some of them got a redshirt year, while others had their careers end early due to injury, probably netting out to about 4 years in the system per player.
1. Due to Covid, all players got an extra year of eligibility. Thus, until 2026, each player can be in the system for up to 6 years (4 playing, 1 redshirt, 1 covid). This adds a full year to the number of players in the system per spot.
2. Previously, playing even 1 down cost a year of eligibility. Now a player can play in some number of games without losing eligibility. This means that virtually every player gets to count some season as a redshirt.
3. The ability of medicine and rehab to restore a player to playing condition is always improving. This means more players returning from injury. At the same time, the NCAA seems to have liberalized the frequency with which they award extra years due to injury. Those used to be rare, but now seem to be pretty automatic.

All told, now, instead of having 4 years of recruits in the system, I'm going to guess that there are 5.4 years of recruits in the system, an increase of 35%. That means that a lot of players are going to be stuck in the system, and not see a path to get them the playing time they hope to get, and that's going to mean a lot of transfers out. On the bright side, it's also going to mean that there are a lot of players out there in the available transfer pool that you can recruit to transfer in.

It's a new system, and it's going to be with us, so we just as well get used to it. That said, once we get by 2026, there won't be players in the system anymore who had a covid year, so things may get somewhat better.

The windows they have are terrible for the game.

Teams need a GM just to manage the fall-out and potential fall-out from the chaos.

And what does this do to the attitude in the locker-room? When it's one or two guys, you rally around it. Most people are excited to see Sieh and Kurtis in the Big18. When it's 20 you start looking around and questioning. Why am I still here? Am I not looking around hard enough? Should I stay? What's happening? Does this guy right next to me have one foot out the door? Am I working my tail off for this guy who doesn't even want to be here?

I hate the portal.

I'll say it in every thread, any kid should have the opportunity to change their situation, but DURING THE SPRING GAME?? After the spring game just because you fell down the depth chart??!

Looks like once Weaver’s name hit the portal, an offer quickly went out to Jay’Viar Suggs, DL, Grand Valley St., who looks like he’s racking up offers at the moment. Safe to say, we definitely appear to be recruiting nonstop.

I'm tracking we've lost 24 to the portal. I can't imagine many other teams have been hit harder then the Bobbies as far as starters/impact players. My god we've lost the entire offense LOL. Oh and not to mention those we lost to graduation (Wiglusz, Bryce, etc.) and the random situations like Kobi Gorman. Going to be a very interesting year.

Kurtis Rourke QB
CJ Harris QB
Sieh Bangura RB
O'Shan Allison RB
Quintell Quinn RB
Bryce Kitrell RB
Miles Cross WR
Jacoby Jones WR
Tyler Walton WR
Keegan Wilburn WR
Aramoni Rhone WR
KJ Howard WR
Will Kacmarek TE
Tyler Foster TE
Alec Burton TE
Kurt Danneker OL
Justin Holloway LS
Bradley Weaver DE
Rayyan Buell DL
Keye Thompson LB
Tristan Cox DL

Prob should add Gundy too.

As for number of scholarship players, we aren’t anywhere near Top 30 nationally.

I keep coming back to this but can't seem to get an answer. Why should coaches be free to jump from job to job improving their financial & professional situation but the players shouldn't be able to?

But Buell is getting his $$, which is THE priority for so many of these college athletes these days. And anyone can put up with crap if the $$ is high enough.

I wouldn't doubt if this is a money grab move. It's become a huge factor in college athletics these days and is behind a lot of the player movement. So there's that, and you also have the novelty of getting to play for and be coached by Deion Sanders. It certainly carries a lot more pizazz than doing that for Tim Albin (that's not a dig on TA as I love the guy, but come on now). But down the road when he looks back at it, it'll certainly resonate with him. Still, all that said, getting a chance to go to Boulder is a fantastic opportunity. I've been there a number of times and simply love that place. I'd love to live in Boulder. I like Athens a lot, but I love Boulder. If I'm in Buell's shoes and I have the chance to get more money to go to Boulder and play for Prime, over staying in Athens for less money under Albin - come on man, that's a no-brainer. I wish him the best of luck there and fully expect him to enjoy it.

Cmon man, you don't deserve that username, please change it so somebody worthy can use it. Unless you're trolling, then good job.

If a player goes into this portal thing and then has second thoughts, is it totally up to the coach whether he can be taken back? From what I can tell it's usually a "don't let your the door hit you on the ass on your way out" situation most of the time.

Most of the time but not always, Torrie Cox entered the portal and came back.

It's the unfortunate truth of the transfer portal. Any player who has a good to great year will probably look for bigger and better things aka $$$. Now that being said, it doesn't always work out and playing time is certainly not a guarantee.

It's sad that we are a stepping stone or a "minor league" for P5 schools to poach from. The old days of loyalty to a school are certainly long gone.

Do you know what might have been different in his case? I'm very puzzled about the dynamics of the portal. Does the player have any claim on his previous scholarship, or does he have to renegotiate his way back?

Once you enter the portal the team no longer has to honor your scholarship.

Athletes better hope the employee tag doesn't fit because then the employer may require a non-compete clause.
