I have always found it a bit fascinating how few football playing JUCO schools there are in Ohio. I believe Hocking College is the only team active currently?

Here's a list I found: https://www.ncsasports.org/football/junior-colleges

Looks like there are a lot in Mississippi, the Great Plains (Kansas, Iowa etc.) or out in Texas and California. CA and TX make sense given the high populations and number of potential players available. Looks like a few pockets in the Northeast, too with PA and NY having a decent number of programs

Just curious as to why JUCO football is not really a thing in Ohio. Likely a Board of Regents and funding call?

We have a large amount of D1 schools, could that play into it also?

It probably has more to do with the large number of D-3 schools in the state. Compare that to California, which has few D-3 schools and a large number of junior colleges. I'm not sure D-3 programs have produced the same results in terms of transfers, but they do provide playing time for players who are not FBS/FCS ready. Bo Hardy was an example of a player who made that move. The portal may provide even more opportunities for these kids.

That was my next guess. We have a lot of football teams in Ohio.

Who?

Saw this on an Ohio Bobcats Facebook page earlier today-likely the same player:

"Welcome QB Delaney Crawford to Ohio Football!
Delaney comes to us from the University of Virginia. Delaney's father, Keith, was a Bobcat gridder in the 1980s. Delaney is wearing his father's number in the photos."

I like his potential at QB.

He certainly fits OUr offense.

That gives us 5 QBs.

Should be some decent competition.

That high school film of him in Pistol was scary🔥. Definitely putting pressure on existing QBs. It will be an interesting summer and I love it.

This film makes me think OUr offense can get super creative:

Tommy Frazier immediately came to my mind.

If he is used at QB, wouldn't that be six QBs? I count five already, with Navarro, Wither, Winter, Poulas (JUCO xfer from El Camino), and Pappas (True Freshman from Grove City). Or, did one of those change their mind?

Yeah forgot about the Grove City QB.

He was recruited by OUr WR Coach so who knows.

I don’t think 6 QBs would be unheard of….especially if one is considering transfer.

The WR room seems crowded.

With 3 years eligibility it might be best to work him into the QB position. I’m ok with Parker at QB but what if he gets hurt and what about next year? Maybe we feel ok about next year but who knows. The move to WR wasn’t because he wasn’t that decent of a QB but probably because he wanted some PT and he wasn’t the right fit for the Virginia offense at QB.

Given the merry go round that is the portal, I won't be shocked if not all of these players are still in Athens come the opening of preseason camp.

I’m assuming that is the number his dad wore at Ohio.

But yeah, 20 is usually for RBs and CBs.

I believe that was his dads #.

Sidenote, I know someone said HE said it was a move to WR, but he didn't move to WR until last season. (no stats) Wonder if it was a QB opportunity here?

Same. He only played WR because of QB depth. Which makes this interesting. I'm going to go out on a limb and say he starts with WRs but also has QB reps in practice as well. He will have a package or two if he isn't labeled a QB.

If he’s not getting PT at QBin. JUC, he’s not going DI as a QB. He is a talent though, one we need some of. Our QB1 (prospective) is already a run first guy, we don’t need a “package” QB.

I guess you never know with some of these JUCO lineman but the staff is addressing a definite need. Tackle depth especially looked to be a real issue based on the roster makeup. Hopefully some of the recent additions shine at this level.

I still see a gaping hole at nose guard. Playing interior lineman that are sub-280 makes me nervous, especially when they don't have Thompson and Houston behind them.

With all these transfers, this Fall is going to be very interesting. At first, with all the transfers and graduations, I was thinking that this would be a team that struggles, and that's reflected in projections based on returning experience. Yet, there seems to be a tremendous amount of potential transferring in as well.

There are so many unanswered questions, however. Have they filled in all the weak areas? Can the coaches integrate them into a cohesive, focused team? Will these new players enjoy Athens and stick around awhile, or will they turn out to be a bunch of carpetbaggers, using Ohio as a temporary stop on their way to some different destination the following year? In the short time available before games start, can Ohio coaches learn the strengths and weaknesses of all the newcomers, and develop offensive and defensive plans that take advantage of those strengths?

Even if the coaches do a great job, the initial product we see on the field the first game or two is likely to be rough around the edges. If things go well, the team could improve dramatically through the season. In most seasons, we know up front who are the likely starters, who are the likely backups, and who might move up the charts, but this season, not so much. I think we can expect unusual mobility in the depth chart. Some players may be down the depth chart at the start of the season, and end up starters at the end, while others may top the chart early, and then fall lower as the season progresses.

All things considered, this season will be a true test for the coaches. If they have done a good job in assessing the needs, and the abilities of those they offered, and if they can build a team from what they have, they will win 7+ games and compete for the top of the MAC. If they have done poorly, they might win only a few games. Myself, I prefer stability, and being able to watch players develop from inexperienced Freshmen into veteran Seniors, but hey, this will be new, different, and definitely not boring.

Add that to the fact that the Cats have had two backup QBs--Bates and Rogers-- play in the NFL at other positions and they were never able to work them into the offense as package guys while they were here. I don't think is's in Albin's bag of tricks.
