Interesting article and here's the link.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/college/columnist/d... /

I never bought the idea of one of the benefit is extra practices. At this point in the season, no one was working on fundamentals it was pure preparation for a specific opponent and making sure those injured began to heal and that those healthy, didn't get injured. With the number of players coming and going from the programs, there really wasn't much carryover to next year.

The revenue sharing component is interesting. Any idea what OU athletes will each get from this new mandate?

I'm guessing that Parker Navarro and Ricky Hunt and maybe a few others benefited from the extra practices before last year's Myrtle Beach Bowl, which in turn helped Navarro feel more secure going into spring practice this year. Even if the extra practices help only a few players, they might be worth it.

The article has a lot of off hand comments about sustainability of the bowl system. In the middle of it is says how ESPN owns 17 bowls and they are propping it up. There was talk of having a NIT type playoff discussed by the G5 commissioners but ultimately they steered toward matching conference champs up in bowl games instead of having them play in a mini playoff.

The new idea seems to be modifying the conference championships into a play-in for the CFP. There is an idea about having the Top 6 Big Ten playoff for 3 automatic qualifiers in a field of 14.

The G6 could end up trying something similar with a play-in to the CFP instead of conference championship games. None of this addresses the bowl system though and those not winning the play-in would be eligible to participate in a bowl later.
