When we have a game like this that we dictate the starting time of, why do we pick the least fan friendly time? With the hot weather this time of year, a late afternoon start would be most ideal. Don’t tell me that ESPN+ dictates the kickoff time, because I’ll call your bluff on.that one.

The only explanation I can think of is not wanting to conflict whatsoever with Ohio State at 3:30.

If that’s the case, make it a night game. Early season night games are very nice, and usually cool and comfortable for the fans. And, on a personal note, I don’t have to put on that horrible, sticking crap called sunscreen. We installed lights a few decades ago, why not use them? I agree let’s not conflict with O$U, but there are other options than a noon start, which is probably the worst possible time. I understand with the ISU game we do what ESPN wants, but with LIU we call the shots and we come up firing blanks. This AD’s office has shown very little in the way of smarts, and I won’t get into the way they’ve handled the wrestling issue. I’ll let the much more informed and capable rpbobcat handle bashing the AD and administration on that score.

3:30 Homecoming

Three horrible start times to start the home season. Oh well, I'm sure there's a good reason.

We've got FOUR Saturday home games. Focus on the positive. I'm sure there's some reason beyond our control regarding kickoff times. I'm sure Julie Cromer would prefer to have 2 p.m. or 3:30 p.m. starts all season long.

You watched OHIO sports for how long? You really believe that?

That's part of it.

I love a noon game in Athens. Get there early. Have a few beers. Enjoy the game. Walk around campus. Go uptown for dinner. Sober up. Drive home. I love it even more now that Athens has instituted a two-night stay at surrounding hotels.

It's a big year, a lot of opportunities to maximize and strategic start times is just a small piece.

Yeah. Try to book a room. Might just be weekends, but I was looking for a room for the Iowa State game a couple months ago and there wasn't anything. So I tried some other weekends. Nothing. I contacted the Hampton Inn and the Holiday Inn directly and they both told me they had a minimum 2-night stay. Thought it was a joke until I heard it from multiple other people.

This will be great for the city's coffers because students will be headed uptown or to the liquor store by 2 those first two games instead of 4 or 6.

True. HI Express, Fairfield, and Hampton have all instituted 2 night minimum policies for Saturday games, ala homecoming (in addition to their inflated rates for game weekends). That crosses the pain threshold for me - I was OK with one night at those prices a few weekends a year. Double that hit and I'll pass.

The only thing that will turn that around is if rooms go empty.

And factor in the fall foliage season when the Logan hotels charge $$$$$

Speaking of...any prediction when the peak color show will be this time?

Nothing stops me from booking one night at HI Express September 2 on hotels.com. I haven't clicked SUBMIT so maybe it happens then?

The small college I work with in North Carolina often has noon kick offs for the football games so the opposing teams, which often travel a fair amount of distance, can get back by Saturday night (saves them money). It’s not always about us. sometimes there actually may be a reason for an early start.

Are they still working on that hotel that used to be Follet's bookstore? I hope that turns out as good as it should be, and deserves to be. Was always an amazing location that just sat empty for so long. So happy not to see it just get flipped into classrooms. Inject some new life into court street.

I heard it was dependent on about 10,000 laws and regulations, historic codes, asbestos, etc etc etc

I have a few friends in real estate development, and I wrote letters to everyone but Santa Claus trying to get developers to turn it into a campus hotel/restaurant.

A GRADUATE hotel would be sick. I love the one in Columbus.

Imagine they didn't bulldoze the Berry hotel. How cool that would be today.

Side note; I also tried that new lodge in hocking hills and it was similar, two day minimum.

I was just looking around on Athens Central's site and it looks like September is good for the 1-night stays, then October-November start going 2-night minimums.

Would be nice, for sure. Looking at where they have other locations, it's mostly much bigger towns/cities. Storrs is comparably sized.

It seems like their formula is that you're either in a city (Cincy, Columbus, Minneapolis, New York, Seattle, etc) or a college town with a P5 school (Eugene, State College, Charlottesville, Storrs, Lincoln, East Lansing, etc.)

We'd be the first smalltown outside of the P5 (I guess technically UConn isnt, but they win national championships so kind of a weird case).

Seattle's is very, very nice. Awesome drinks in their rooftop bar too. Almost a little too boujee for what I'd think Athens would need/want though.

For early in the season I'm a big fan of the 3:30 kickoff, most of the tower side getting in the shade around kickoff and game ending as sun sets. Later in the year when temps decline I like Noon and trying to capture that sunshine.

People will always find something to complain about. The Bobcats play in Athens on five fall Saturdays, but that isn't good enough. Two games begin at Noon and that isn't acceptable. Ohio has a home game in November in the middle of the week at 7 pm. Some will complain that the cold weather will keep them away from that game. Pleasing everyone is impossible!
