Per Pete Thamel.

Sources: Ohio University and coach Tim Albin have agreed to two-year contract extension through the 2026 season. His salary jumps to $700,000 from $535,000 and there’s a new clause that gives him an automatic year extension for winning eight games or the MAC championship.

What a day at the Convo.....Wow!

Some heads on here are going to explode. Seems the AD didn’t listen to our pontifications on BA. This is quite shocking.

Good for him.

He wins 10 games next season and he'll be taking route 50 all the way to Morgantown.

This is what I found on MAC coaches pay, compiles from a variety of sources, so it may not be accurate:

1. Candle, Toledo $1.1
2. Taylor, WMU $850k
3. McElwain, CMU $840k
4. Linguist, Buffalo $675k
5. Hammock, NIU $631k
6. Creighton, EMU $540k
7. Burns, Kent $540k
8. Martin, Miami $533k
9. Albin, Ohio $531k
10. Loeffler, BG $525k
11. Moorhead, Akron $500k
12. Neu, Ball State $453k

Tim Albin now at #4 seems fair.

Good for Coach Albin and the football program! I'm laughing at the above remark about some heads on here are going to explode. The university administration could care less what people on this website think about extending a contract for coaches and athletic department staff.

116 Bradley Missouri Valley Brian Wardle $681,886
117 Akron MAC John Groce $650,000
118 Western Kentucky Hilltoppers CUSA Rick Stansbury(Fired) $650,000

125 Illinois State Missouri Valley Dan Muller $564,000
126 Old Dominion CUSA Jeff Jones $550,000
127 Wright State Raiders Horizon League Scott Nagy $500,000
128 Southern Illinois Missouri Valley Bryan Mullins $475,000

132 Marshall CUSA Dan D’Antoni $420,000
133 Bowling Green MAC Michael Huger $415,000
134 Toledo MAC Tod Kowalczyk $415,000
135 Northern Kentucky Horizon League Darrin Horn $400,000
136 Florida Atlantic CUSA Dusty May $390,000
137 Manhattan MAAC Steve Masiello $389,383
138 Kent State MAC Rob Senderoff $385,000

See above for College basketball coaches salaries. Not certain how up to date these salaries are for MAC coaches. However it appears that Senderhoff at Kent and Kowalczyk should be a little higher on this list. Toledo has won the last three regular season championships in the conference. If CMU is paying a coach more than Toledo and Kent, something is wrong. The Michigan schools were terrible in basketball and at the bottom of the MAC. This information should probably be on the basketball side, but I noticed the post above said Coach Albin is now about the fourth highest paid MAC coach.

With the automatic extension provision I wonder if there is a healthy buyout provision.

I’m glad that Albin is our coach. We have no business paying him 700k. Lots of people must have fallen asleep in Econ 101.

This is what we should be doing :

Kent State extends basketball coach Rob Senderoff’s contract; team getting a lift from transfers – Terry Pluto

The 700K doesn't bother me as much as the 8 win automatic extension does. Is that for the life of the contract? So he keeps getting extended each year he wins 8? That's basically what Mark Stoops at Kentucky is getting - an extension every year they make a bowl. Schedule cupcake OOC and win half your league games. I realize Ohio's OOC isn't necessarily cupcake because of money games, but Albin should be thanking his agent for that clause. He should get that extension almost every year the way Ohio has played.

I was actually gonna ask that as well... It's an EXTENSION... NOT a restructure? Or it's both?

My view was; ($2.4M / 4yr)
2023: $531K
2024: $531K
2025: $700K + contract accelerators
2026: $700K + contract accelerators

HOWEVER - I saw a kid from the Post say Albin has a great chance to get a TWO-YEAR extension next season. (Meaning win MACC + 8 games)

8 games is a low bar for someone to make $700K + 1/yr extra.

I would've maybe even been okay with an auto extension for a bowl WIN or something. Like you said, 8 games is a near lock for good teams. I'm not sure I'm looking to extend my coach that goes 8-4 and gets blasted in a bowl game. 8-5 isn't giving me the warm and fuzzies.

To me this seems very generous, especially since its only based on the results of last season.
Plus, even with last season's results, it doesn't seem like many, if any, other schools were knocking down his door with offers.

I don't know the "mechanics" of how this type of deal is put in place.
That is, does the University President get involved, or have to sign off
on the arrangement, or is done exclusively through the A.D. ?

If the University President is involved, perhaps the timing is related to a new President coming in soon.

The President has to sign off and many of our recent hirings and contracts have had the President heavily involved. The Board also has to signoff.

"Coach Albin and his staff have done an outstanding job resetting the momentum of our football program," Cromer said. "Without a doubt, Tim earned this commitment from our University. He's a leader not only for our football program, but also for our campus and the Athens community."

The Bobcats finished the 2022 season as the No. 1 passing offense in the MAC, establishing themselves a threat early in the season with a single-game program-best 692 offensive yards. The same game, redshirt junior quarterback Kurtis Rourke broke the program record for passing yards in a single game (527). The Bobcats wrapped up their record-setting performance with a 30-27 overtime victory against Wyoming in the Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl (Dec. 30).

"As head coach, Tim Albin has been instrumental in turning around our football program. In just one year's time, we recovered from a losing season to being named MAC East Champions in 2022," President Sherman said. "He is extremely deserving of this recognition, which is competitive with his MAC peers.

As BTC mentioned above the President has to sign off and see the President and AD's remarks above.

What you're describing above is Solich's entire tenure at OU. Not only did he basically have a lifetime contract, but we named the field after him.

My take is that the length of this extension is just right for recruiting. It tells recruits that Albin should be here through their whole career. And if he keeps winning "well enough" (8+ wins each year), that means each ensuing year's recruits are also safe in the knowledge he'll be the guy through their careers as well.

Let's focus on the positive. My read is that the culture in the program is good. And if recruits like him, this is a reassuring thing for them as they consider Ohio.

All good vibes these days for Bobcat football.

(And as for this needing to be approved by the president and the Board... does anyone think this extension would have been announced this loudly if there was any chance it would get vetoed? This is like making sure your girlfriend is going to say yes before you propose. It's a done deal.)

Doesn't matter, its 8 wins. Higher bar than Frank had for his automatic rollover.

So are you saying an 8 and 6 record with two season ending losses gets an automatic rollover?

Appears so:

Also, a new clause has been added to the deal that gives him an automatic one-year extension for winning either eight games, or the MAC championship.

I thought the 8-win bar was low, too. Then I looked at the MAC standings for the past eight seasons. The MAC hasn't had more than three teams with eight wins in a season since 2015. So in most recent seasons eight wins puts a team in the top 25% of the league. That's upper tier in the MAC. Maybe a benefit of being in a lower tier conference.

We will get by.

In 2017 there were 4 and in 2015 there were 6.

I think this contract extension was fair. Rewards Albin for the accomplishments of 2022 and gives an incentive for winning games.

If he's winning 8 games, we're in the mix for a MAC title and there is stability. We can't afford to have any 2021 seasons again. Luckily, I think that season was an anomaly.

Worst case, 7-5 regular season and a bowl win. Is that really so bad? Maybe I'm setting the bar low.

Frank got a rollover and never had to produce to get it.
