Per Matt Brown at The Athletic, if the 12-team playoff format would have existed in 1998 when the BCS began, 66 teams would have made at least one playoff appearance. Gotta admit that's pretty awesome, and this is a long time coming.

At least they are leaving one (1) spot for a potential G5 school!

My ideal playoff system would comprise of a P5 playoff and a G5 playoff, two separate tournaments.

Would like to see a 14-team or 16-team playoff.

10 Conference Champions. Automatic Bids.

4-6 At-Large.

A much smaller version of the NCAA bball tournament. Seeding based on rankings. Really give the MAC, Sun Belt, and that ilk a chance to make a run.

This playoff sounds like a war of attrition because you'll have to grind through 3 or 4 top teams to get a title. I can see where the very best team in the country runs out of gas and a team ranked 8th or 10th grinds out a title.

Virginia Tech earned a title shot in 1999 without Top 40 recruiting classes on the basis of an undefeated season. Lost the game but how do you get to the championship game now unless the program produces 5 star classes every year? Making it is overrated if the capacity is not there to win it. Winning it is questionable for the 5 star programs because they have to go through 3-4 games.

BCS era with the human and computer polls was a less subjective ranking system than what the CFP uses today with a committee. They should have set it up though where all the Top 25 teams go to a NYD bowl. Then if a program wins that it sets them up in the rankings the next year and boosts the recruiting classes.

Excitement in college football is based around dominance instead of access. Big Ten champs start coming in with 3 losses because of increased parity in Top 25 recruiting viewership goes down.

Most Memorable Bobcat Events Attended
2010 97-83 win over Georgetown in NCAA 1st round
2012 45-13 victory over ULM in the Independence Bowl
2015 34-3 drubbing of Miami @ Peden front of 25,086

Having all conference champs is the ideal scenario, but this is a start.

It'll potentially have a Cinderella feel to it like the basketball tournament if a G5 team can pull out a win or two.

At moment the G5 places 1 team in the Fiesta, Cotton or Peach Bowl every year. With the new format they'll be losing in the first round 9 times out of 10. That one year out of 10 making the quarterfinal where they can play in one of the 6 NYD games.

If the G5 team won its bowl and had its QB returning that positions it to make a run at the 4 team playoff as Cincinnati did last year. Losing in the playoff shows the programs ceiling.

So is it set that the top G5 team gets in every year? Do the 5 P5 conference champs make it automatically now?

I wish it was just a 10 team tourney of conference champions. Top P5 champ gets a bye, the other 4 play a play-in round. No rankings or judgment of any sort for admittance, only seeding. I loathe the rankings and all the bickering, it's like figure skating.

Top 6 conference champions so it could be 2 G5 champs in some cases.

I'm skeptical it will ever be more than one G5 conference, considering how disrespected two 10-2 Sun Belt teams were this year. They also said the phrase "Group of Five" is going away, but they'll just replace it with some other moniker.

Has anyone in the NFL said if they like this change considering the extra games and potential injuries to draft able players?

There's just no world where every conference gets an auto bid.

The P5 isn't realigning into super conferences to give a 10-3 MAC team a guaranteed playoff spot regardless of their SOS. It's a pipe dream to think that 28% of the playoff field is going to be comprised of champions from the MAC, Sun Belt, Mountain West, and AAC.

Take this year as an example. Here's what the auto bid field would look like (taking a wild ass guess at conference champions):

AAC - Tulane
ACC - Clemson
B12 - TCU
B10 - Michigan
CUSA - UTSA
MAC - Ohio
MW - Boise
P12 - USC
SEC - Goergia
SunBelt - Troy

That means for four at large spots, you've got:

Ohio State
Penn State
Washington
Oregon
Alabama
LSU
Tennessee
Utah
Kansas State
Etc.

You're going to have a bunch of 2 and 3 loss teams in the playoffs via autobids and leave out a bunch of those who are flat better than the autobid teams.

If the goal's to have the best teams play for a championship, that's not the way to do it. And if the goal's to put the best product on the field to make as much money as possible, that's also not the way to do it.

unfortunately the goal is to preserve as many spots as possible for the “brands” of college football (brands attract eyeballs and clicks), then throw in a cinderella to feign “inclusion” and have that storyline available. $$$$ rule

When those "brands" are the better teams, why would you not want them playing? Sorry, but Bama, OSU, and most others on the above list would roll those G5 champions on most any year.

Toledo, at 8-5, whose only non conference wins were against LIU and UMass and gave up 77 points to Ohio State doesn't belong in a playoff.

If we had won, at 10-3, with two blowout losses to P5 teams (including a 4-8 Iowa State) we wouldn't belong either.

my point is let’s not pretend that crowning the best team is the objective. it’s creating theater and eyeballs. just as it is in march madness. rarely does april come around and we all go boy they sure are the best team. with a 12 team playoff we will certainly see 3 loss and even a 4 loss team make the playoffs in the future. hardly a formula for “the best team”

Which is why the only option that checks all the boxes is a P5 and G5 playoff.

If you are using a single elimination tournament of any sort you have already surrendered the argument that your objective was to find the best team.
