Top in HS participaton was in 2008 and the MAC defeated 7 P5 opponents with 4 teams representing in the Top 25 during the 2012 season. I'm convinced demographics were at play in the surge of the MAC in the 90's early 2000's and again in 2012.
With all the FCS teams moving up the MAC might become like it is in basketball where its top heavy and a huge gap between the top 4 programs and everyone else with a limited amount of top end talent.

I suspect this is more of an anomaly from covid than a reversal of the long-term trend.
I've seen crazier things happen.
