Tell me your All-time favorite Bobcat play on offense, defense and special teams.

Lots of great folks on here and I can learn a thing or two from the past.

Offense - Terrance McCrae's Hail Mary at Marshall. The crowd went dead silent. You could hear OU's bench!

Defense - Pick 6 Dion Byrum.

Special Teams - Stafford Owens breaks punt return record on last punt return of his career. (Lost starting job and was less than 50 yards away with 7 or 8 games left. He wanted it so bad all-season and the last game there was an injury. He got one chance and broke a long-one to break it. I literally watched a monkey jumped off a man's back.) Probably better special teams plays out there but watching him go through that and perservering gave me hope in my young career at the time.

Can't wait to hear yours!

Good topic!

Special teams (Tie)

"Onside kick" against Kent. Line drive kick is drilled right into Kent players helmet, bounces up and caught by Ohio.

"Onside kick" Fly pattern kickoff against East Carolina in B O'B bowl game. Sky kick is perfectly timed to hit Ohio player in stride down the sideline. Unfortunately we failed to come up with points after that miracle kick and left ECU in the game, which they came back and won.

Defense: Hard to argue against Dion in OT against Pitt.

Offense: The entire 93 yard 4th quarter drive against Penn State in 2012. No margin for error. up 3 points. made play after play after play and finished it off Tett to Foster. Jubilation.

I'll play this:

Offense:
1. Tom Dubbs to Richard Hill vs. Kent State for 99yds (CFB record) on a Z-Corner Post route vs. Kent State.
2. Keeland Logan vs Minnesota on a 4th and 1 and the big man rumbled 60 yards up the gut to seal the win and beat the Gophers.

Defense:
1. Any lick that Tom Carder put on guys!
2. Andre Jackson lighting WR's up!
3. Dion "Say my Name Bitch" Byrum
4. Mario Daniel and Bobby Holloway up the middle in 1996

Special Teams:
1. Watching Stafford Owens shake a bake for TD's on punts (got shafted his senior season).
2. Watching Ray Ray return kicks
3. Larry Hargrove returning kicks.

Joe Donatelli also wrote a story about it but I'm having issues with the link. I'm sure there are 110 alums who are on this board who were there. I know it's been discussed before here.

Offense: Theo Scott's 4Q TD run against Temple in 2009 that sealed the MAC East crown.

Defense: Hard not to pick Dion here. Other memorable one for me would be the hit Javon Hagan laid on the guy from WMU in the MAC title game in 2016. Big oooooof moment.

Special Teams: Vividly remember this one in Frank's first season where we weren't very good. But Scott Mayle's kickoff return TD against Ball State in 2005. He got flagged for a celebration penalty because he put up a number 1 hand signal as he was crossing the goal line. Lame.

We kicked Ball State's ass that day though. Kalvin had 200+ and Justin Fitzgerald had a 80 yd TD on a reverse or end-around.

The best defensive play is Dion Byrum's pick six in OT vs. Pitt. That sort of signaled that things were different under the new coach after decades of mostly losing.

The first play offense that came to mind was the sealing TD against Marshall in 2015. Darrius Vick got knocked out of this game early with an injury. JD Sprague played most of the game and had Ohio up 14-10 late in the game. Then as we were trying to seal the game and eat the clock he got hobbled. I don't recall how but if seems like Sprague was nursing minor injuries most a lot of the time and often tried to play through it. They sent 3rd QB Greg Windham in and if I recall he was roughed on a cheap shot flag against Marshall and got knocked out the the game in one play. Sprague came back in, noticeably hurting, and scrambled got knocked out again on a late hit out of bounds near the goal line. The half the distance penalty only gave us 1 yard. Joey Duckworth came in as the 4th string QB, stepped aside to fake an audible, and a direct snap 1 yard TD run by AJ Oulette sealed the win with only a minute or two left. It sticks in my head because we beat a rival with backup QBs and it made me smile because unlike other positions if you stay for 3 or 4 years you will get into a game on special teams and garbage time sometimes unless you are the 4th string QB. As far as I can remember that was the one single play Duckworth got on the field in 3 or 4 years on the roster.

Any play involving a monkey literally jumping off a football player's back has to be one of any fan's favorite plays to have witnessed.

Offense: I'll go with Lavon Brazill's touchdown reception in the Potato Bowl. It was that fake option right and pull back play (I love that play) and about a 50 yard dime from Tett over the middle to a leaping Lavon in stride. So ath-a-letic, so impactful to that game's outcome.

Defense: This is like playing the second place game because if you don't choose Dion's game winning pick six, what could possibly top it? Where would we have been in 09 if Kenny Jackson doesn't have his pick six at North Texas? Curtis Myers' fumble recovery in the end zone at Ohio State for a TD was a great moment to see live, though soured a bit by the end result. Wish I had some way to see Julian Posey's game-sealing pick six vs. NIU in 2009, because I'm told the O Zone went complete ape when he crossed the goal line. Hmm, Muncy had like a 90+ yard fumble return for a score against Buffalo in 2004. This is a tough one...

Special Teams: First thing that came to mind was Chris Garrett's punt return TD against WMU in 2006. This was coming off a laid egg at home to BG the week before (sorry ExCat, I know you were on the roster then). I thought the Garrett return was a pivotal moment in the game and particularly impressive in how many guys he made miss. Pivotal game outcome to how that season turned around. That game also had a key fourth down pass breakup in the end zone by either Tyler Russ or Michael Graham that probably would make my top 10 favorite defensive plays. Special mention to the muffed kickoff vs Marshall in 2013 that we recovered in the end zone for a TD. I busted a gut laughing seeing that poor Herd return man panic trying to pick the ball back up.

These are outstanding plays. As far as the BG homecoming...we were actually flat before we left the locker room. Our AD came into the locker room right after Solich speech and suspended 3 players out of no where. And they were starters (mainly on D). That pre-game drama led to us playing flat.

Offense: Wasn't one play vs Marshall in Peden when each running play on a late drive seemed to net a first down every other carry, just smashing them up the middle.

Defense: perhaps against Temple or NIU when a receiver got blasted and his flying helmet was picked off by I think Nathan Carpenter.

Special teams: LOOOOOONG walk off field goal with windy conditions to beat Ball State in a meaningful game.

OFF TOPIC

Greatest play I have seen in a Bobcat game was made by Kent State in the fall of 1973. My brother flew me down to Athens along with a friend to start our OU adventure freshman year. On quarters then we didn't start till the Wednesday of the 3rd week of September but football games had already started. So we came down on the Saturday before classes to see our first Bobcat game. Kent had won the MAC the year before and was still pretty loaded. Gerald Tinker a Flash wide receiver had won the Olympic Gold in the 4x100 relay in the '72 games.. Heading north on the field, Tinker ran a button hook with two Bobcat defenders behind him and through which Tinker had to go to score. He caught the pass with his back to the goaline about 40 yards away. He turned and started straight up the field, the two Bobcat defenders obviously never having tried tackling someone SO fast converged on him and he was by them before they smacked into each other and coming up completely empty. It was like watching two coyotes trying to catch Road Runner. meep meep!

Interesting thread. I'll give a few that come to mind and, as they say in Congress, I reserve the right revise and extend my remarks . . .

Defense: The one everyone has mentioned -- Dion's pick-six in OT against Pitt. Where I was sitting, in the second row of the Phillips Section on the 50 yard line, I saw that play extremely well and when he made his first cut he headed directly toward where I was sitting until he cut again and ran toward the goal line. This visual memory is locked in a special place in my brain.

Offense, I have several, not in any particular order:

1. At Maryland, 1997. OHIO has a 21-14 lead, OHIO has the ball as the minutes tick away in the final quarter. Bobcat fans start chanting "Go Clock, Go!" OHIO mounts a slow methodological, option-style drive with short gains and eating up clock. Somewhere around midfield we have crucial third-down play. Steve Hookfin runs the ball off guard. Unlike the others in this drive so far this one is not an obvious first down. Time out for a measurement. The officials have trouble telling if we've made the line to gain or not. They pull out the old "credit card" trick. Credit card can't be inserted in the space between the marker and the tip of ball. Officials signal, "First Down, OHIO!" And, the rest is history as OHIO pulls the 21-14 upset after trailing 14-0 early in the contest.

2. Every member of the OHIO offense in the 1960 home game against highly-ranked Southern Illinois Everyone was expecting a close contest. OHIO rips the Salukis 48-6 and clinches the college division national championship.

3. OHIO RB Bill Gary in the 35-6 win over Kentucky in 1971. In that game he was "the Man." Every other play the PA announcer was saying "Gary on the carry." My favorite play of the game, though, was late in the last quarter when OHIO was marching for what looked like another TD. Coach Hess calls a TO. He obviously tells the team they are not going to score again. The next play the OHIO line opens up a big hole and Gary scampers through it and reaches the 20 yard line after about a 15-yard gain. He then "trips" over the painted 20 yard line stripe and falls flat on his belly with no Wildcat within ten yards of him. True sportsmanship in my book!

4. The "fluke" TD against Penn State, and I can't remember the players in this one and it's too late to look it up. But this was the first TD against Penn State in the 2012 upset. A pass toward the end zone that a PSU player jumps up and touches and deflects right to a waiting OHIO player who scampers into the end zone for the score.

I have others, but that's it for now.

My favorite "play" was actually by students. 1979 pregame against BGSU, 2 fraternity guys yanked up a rope along the visitors ramp as BG players ran onto the field. Big pileup, punches thrown...lifelong memories.
