I saw that the 110's half time show was dedicated to the Lawler Brothers in honor of the 20th Anniversary of their deaths.

I also know that the 110's playing of Salvation is in their honor.

I really teared up when the Alumni Band stood when the 110 started playing it.

All I remember is that the brothers died in an accident.

Does anyone know why their deaths had such a lasting impact on the 110 ?

Not to make light of this, but “6 year members”? Did they want to be professional students?

Almost the exact 20 year anniversary of their death. Very sad.

We’ve had a few in the past that stayed around for awhile. There is a cap now. I believe you must be a full time student and the limit is 5 years for undergraduates. Graduate students get up to another 2 years.

Frank and Jud were from Graham HS in St Paris, OH Graham is one of our feeder schools. There are a few like Washington CH, Olentangy Orange, Johnstown, and Fredericktown that have 110 alums and do 110 shows, then many of their students join the 110. Just a very strong tie between many of those students because they grew up together. Then add in that Frank and Jud probably spanned 10 years in the band and at least 20% of the alumni marched with one of them at some point. I was a senior in 1990, which was Jud’s freshman year. He was a big farm kid you’d think should be playing football instead of marching band. Nicest guy with a laugh that would make you laugh even if you had no idea what you were laughing at.

Graham HS had a celebration a couple weeks ago and the Lawler parents attended. The 110 also performed I know Dr. Suk was close to both because they were upper class men when he took over the 110 in 1996 and I’m sure helped him transition in.

The Lynyrd Synyrd medley performed on Saturday was selected because they were Jud’s favorite band and they were headed to a ZZ Top/ Lynyrd Skynyrd concert the night of their accident 20 years ago yesterday. The Best of Both Worlds was played by alumni band because it was performed in 1996, Dr Suk’s first year and both Jud and Frank would have performed that year.

There are two memorials in Athens for the Lawlers. One is a picture of them in the back of The Pub in “Mayberry Corner”. On Friday afternoon of Homecoming, you’ll find The Pub jammed with 110 alumni (and sometimes his parents) gathering with them before heading to Peden around 5pm to watch the current band practice their halftime show. The other is on East side of Emeriti Park across from Peden Stadium. The alumni normally pass by the memorial as they walk from the parade to the field house for practice, but the area is currently under construction for the new Chem building.

Bobcat110, thanks for all the good information. I knew very little about this tragedy, and I appreciated the way you summarized what it means to the 110 family. Now, in retrospect, I understand the halftime show much better.

My wife and I were pleased that my son received the Jud and Frank Lawler Memorial Scholarship during his time on campus.

"The recipient must be an instrumentalist in the Marching 110 Band who is in at least his/her second year of membership in the band. The selection committee will be comprised of the Marching 110 Band Director, Marching 110 band staff and graduate associates. The committee will select the recipient band member who exhibits the most enthusiasm, spirit and dedication as shown by Jud and Frank Lawler when they were members of the Marching 110"

Actually, it seems even more of an honor at this the 20th anniversary of their passing. RIP.

That is big honor for 110 actives. I have two daughters in the current band and my older daughter received the Jud and Frank honor at the end of last season.

I do not know when it was first played, but know who to ask. It is performed at warmups before every game.

I know this is an old post, but I’d like to add to what others have responded:

I was in the 110 in 1996 one of the most memorable times of my life.

These guys exemplified everything about being in that band, imho. I had not kept track of happenings over the decades and today I found out about this tragedy.

The Lawlers were so impactful that, to date, when I think or recount memories from my single year in that band Jud is a necessary mention… and that was with my assumption he was otherwise alive and well.

Bobcat 110 nailed it, but I'll add a few personal memories.

I became close to Jud freshman year and was his roommate his Junior Year. I was not a 110 member but crashed a bunch of their parties with him. I visited he and his family multiple times in St. Paris and met Frank while he was still in high school.

Jud loved Athens and he and Frank were working in Athens at the time of the accident. The story I heard about the Pub photo is that they ate there for lunch nearly every day. A few months prior to the accident Jud had made plans to finish his degree.

Two of the greatest people to ever walk the planet. Their funeral is still the most emotional event I've ever attended, with the 110 playing a huge role in it.

They loved Athens. Loved the 110. Love performing at all athletic events.
