When an unknown assistant gets promoted to head coach, especially on short notice, it is normal for recruiting to be difficult initially. Potential recruits don't know who he is. Potential recruits don't know what kind of program he is going to run. Potential recruits don't know how long he is going to be around. However, once he establishes what he can do, what kinds of systems he is going to run, and wins enough to show he will be around awhile, that reverses.

Albin has now done that. Regardless of the outcome of the next two games, recruits can see the team's attitude. They can see the aggressive defense, and the wide open offense, one that works both with a passing QB or a running QB. They see that he can win. They see that he now has some job security, at least so far as any college coach ever has job security. I expect to see a big change in recruiting in the year(s) ahead.

All good points. With Rourke back next year and open positions on defense there could be transfers too.

I don't believe in the next CFP era that we will see next level type of recruiting that we did in this one out of the AAC. The AAC had some built in advantages to make that happen. Lineage as the 6th best conference traced back to the Old Big East conference. Willingness to spend on salaries at a time that it mattered. New facilities coming online at the right time.

P5 has always had better salaries than the G5 but now it will have the added advantage of better NIL opportunities. Then of course UCF, UC and Houston are moving into the P5 after a 10 year run of the most notable G5 programs. I don't think it will be possible for a G5 to pierce the Top 50 recruiting classes any more.

24/7 recruiting shows AAC recruiting moving forward in range with MAC.

2022 Recruiting
Memphis 176.39
Tulane 160.73
Miami Oh 153.97
Buffalo 150.25
SMU 146.38
Central Mich. 144.51
ECU 143.29
NIU 142.15
Kent St. 136.64
USF 136.48
Toledo 134.89
Temple 129.57

This is the Top 6 of the AAC and MAC and outside of Memphis the MAC looks slightly better. We all know that Miami's higher recruiting level which is for quite a few years now hasn't translated to MAC dominance. My point is a MAC Championship by Ohio will help but I don't think it will take the program to an appreciable stratosphere in recruiting. The future of success at this level is going to come down to development and winning continuity/staff continuity.

Good data, Wes. One question: 2022 recruiting refers to current college freshmen or high school seniors?

This is for the current college freshman. High school seniors for 2023 are setting up with much of the same pattern aside from Tulane rated lower and SMU the best of the rest.

That's always been true, and will continue to be true. It also comes down to finding gems in the rough. Still, though, Ohio is going to be competing against other G5 teams for the players they want, and you'd like to see Ohio winning a higher share of those battles.

Here is how Ohio's recruiting classes have been ranked in recent years:

2023 10th so far
2022 12th
2021 9th
2020 11th
2019 5th
2018 9th
2017 8th
2015 5th
2014 6th
2013 10th
2012 5th
2011 6th

For a long time, Ohio was pretty consistently in the 5-6th range. Albin's first recruiting class showed a not surprising dropoff. My point is that, now that he has established that he is a winner, classes should pop back up to the upper middle of the MAC, but we shall see.

I'm not saying that Ohio's recruiting classes will instantly go from bottom of the
MAC to the top. I'm saying that success breeds more success. If Ohio can win with bottom of the MAC classes

Are these rankings based on average player rank/score or are they part of the heavily flawed rankings that account too much for class size?

If I was on that staff we would be making a drive to Ironton tonight to see where Ty Perkins is mentally after Luke is leaving UC. Kid is fantastic.

These are the raw numbers based on the heavily flawed rankings that account too much for class size, and which don't really know all that much about the 2 star players. By any measure, though, I expect Ohio to jump back to where they were. Coaching stability and success will have paybacks in recruiting. Success breeds success.

I think Ohio has to really have huge success in the off season in the portal, both in numbers and quality.

I agree, but this is limited by my lack of knowledge in one area. Apparently some players have a year of eligibility more than it would seem, but I have no idea how to know which ones. Ohio has, I think, ten Senior starters on defense. Normally that would mean a rough season next year, as the defense would have to be completely rebuilt, but if 3-4 of those have another year, it won't be as bad.

If all, or nearly all, of this year's Seniors will be gone, Ohio definitely will need a lot of help from the portal. If many return, not so much...

Agree, Jeff (sorry, no "+1" from me). Especially along the defensive front 7. But, as LC points out, the COVID extra year of eligibility might lessen OUr losses in this area.

I hope the extra COVID year works out.

If we can’t keep or bring in some more D linemen it will go from a strength to a weakness.

I’m not even sure if they have offered the kid, I would be begging him to come here and stay close to home. In a world where I am currently wearing green glasses the recruiting is never to my satisfaction.

After seeing our offense I would think that wideouts would be falling over themselves to come play with Kurtis. Look at Sam Wiglusz. Dude didn't hit the field at OSU and is a First Team All-MAC guy who I am guessing may get a sixth round type of look in the NFL Draft (he is a heck of a possession guy). Throw in Bostic who also may get a look just from his physical size. Both guys were Power 5 transfers. If I were a sixth string Power 5 receiver I would flock to Athens next year (although Jacoby and Miles are back). If I were a great pass blocking lineman I would also want to block for him (or run block for Sieh as well!)!!
