Article in the Post regarding DC Jimmy Burrow's son. Hoping to make it to town Friday night to see this kid in action, as I have not seen him play yet this year.

From the article above ~ “I like Ohio a lot. My dad being a coach there is cool, and they were my first offer,” Burrow said. “They’ll always be high on my list. I’m open to all schools that want to come in and recruit me.

There is still hope...

Joey Burrow is pitching a perfect game against Albany Alexander.   First half: 11 for 11, 282 yards, 5 TDs.

At the half, Athens 77, Alexander 7.

And oh yeah, the Bulldogs star running back, Trae Williams is keeping pace.  8 carries...253 yards, 3 scores.

Gotta love way outmatched high school games. I remember when my high school had a guy who ran for 400+ yards in almost half the games one season. Gameplan was give Cannon the ball

I hope that the young man considers Ohio University, Athens, Ohio.  The way that Coach and staff are loading up with talent via the recruiting path--a fine qb looks to be the last piece to put us right up there.

How is this guy doing?

Surprised one of the top QB's in the Midwest and Bobcat fans would rather talk of others.

After hearing so much about him in A-town, I decided I had to check out a game.   I only lasted the first half because that's all I needed to see.

His first half stats: 11 for 11,  282 yards, 5 touchdowns, plus a 50 yard TD pass called back.

It was 77-7 at half.

p.s. sorry, just realized bruthcuth had this above.

Not sure where Joey wants to play, but, there would have to be happier places to play than Bo Pelini's Nebraska.  Honestly, were he my son I would be very pleased for him to choose to play for coach Gdowski, throwing to Dixon's receivers.  If he were to go elsewhere I would hope for him to still be in green, still to an OU, only to be a Duck not a Bobcat. Only two choices I see,

I'd be fine with him going to Michigan as a 4 year starter with a 4-0 record against OSU :)

If he were to come to OHIO, it would remind me of the Todd Snyder recruitment.  O$U wanted him very badly, and Woody never did understand how the mere fact that his father was the OHIO basketball coach could have influenced Todd to sign with OHIO rather than Ohio State.

well, er, Snyder's dad won 300 games as the Bobcat BASKETBALL Coach,  And for every Todd Snyder, there's a Mike Wren.  Mike's dad was the legendary Bobcat baseball coach...and Mike starred at Miami in basketball.  It would be very interesting to ask Mr. Snyder what prompted him to stay at home.  Maybe, just maybe, Bill Hess told him he planned to throw the football while Woody detested the forward pass.  Bill Hess, a former Hayes assistant, would have known all about that.

There is a huge difference between the Snyder family and Burrow family, and kids who played HS sports in the mid 60s and those today.

Well, Mike Wren had a great career at Miami.  He was even instrumental in an NCAA win over Notre Dame.  He would have been even better in the era of the three-point shot.  All that being said, he was not quite in the same league as Todd coming out of high school.  Todd was the kind of athlete that was on almost everyone's recruiting radar.  That was not the case with Mike.  Todd once told me why he decided on Ohio, but I don't think it's correct to talk about that here in any specificity.  I'll just say that it had more to do with loyalty and less with how many passes might be thrown his way.  I also know how much Woody wanted Todd.  After the North-South All Star game in Canton, Woody literally drooled over Todd.  He couldn't believe that Todd wouldn't sign on with the Buckeyes.  I suspect Woody was not used to getting rebuffed like that.  Sure, the Burrow family does not have the long association with Ohio that the Snyder family did (and does), but there is a certain potential parallel here -- hometown boy sought by colleges all across the nation decides to stay home.  It might or might not happen, but it's certainly a possibility.  That's all I was saying.  Go OHIO!

Edit: Yes I corrected the "baseball" typo in my original post.  I'm blaming it on the spellchecker.  Must have mistyped "basketball" in such a way that the spellchecker thought it was "baseball."  That's my excuse and I'm sticking with it.

FWIW, a recent Rivals article says Ohio remains his only offer. Illinois is close to offering and Burrow may visit in November. Ohio St. is showing a little interest and WVU has been in contact.

I watched Joey against Nelsonville the other night.  He does look like a D1 college quarterback in my uneducated opinion, but the lack of competition is concerning.  Most of the schools Athens plays are very very weak.

The Messenger's recent article on TT puts it all in focus. What the QB must do. If the staff is seeing Mr. Burrow doing this better than other hs QBs then there are really no concerns.

For Tettleton, it’s all a part of the same formula — play after play. Get the information, decipher it, and then make the right read, the right throw.

He makes it sound ordinary. It isn’t.

“For me, it’s just about taking what the defense gives us,” Tettleton said. “You go through your reads. You see what’s there.

“And then you make the throw.”

Scout believe insane production overrides a lack of quality comp in some cases. Joey is doing that.

There are people on this site who will take this the wrong way, so let me be clear:
I AM NOT ADVOCATING THE FOLLOWING.  AGAIN, I AM NOT ADVOCATING THE FOLLOWING.

That stated, this is what I believe would be the scenario that would give the Bobcats the best chance of getting Joey Burrow to play for them.

At some point next year, perhaps on his 70th birthday, September 8, Frank Solich announces that he will retire as Ohio University Head Football Coach at the conclusion of the 2014 season.

After a nationwide search for a successor, the university announces that  defensive co-ordinator Jimmy Burrow will become the next Heard Coach of the Bobcats.

Even this might not be enough, but it would give Ohio a fighting chance.

Not here, at least...but has he had reason to? Probably not...

Women's Basketball: Awful program, coach fired. Uhhhh, 'nuff said
Men's Basketball: None of the assistants were ready when Groce left. Let's be honest, here.
Soccer: Mediocre team under previous coach. Needed a change.
Baseball: Best case for internal hire here. Was disappointed, but it's understandable. Program was rather mediocre under Carbone.

If we had the combination of a great program and an assistant coach that was ready, I'm sure he wouldn't hesitate to do it. We just haven't had a scenario like that.

While coaches in some cases look at prolific numbers over quality of competition, sometimes they do not.  The lack of interest is odd - and concerning.  While only a junior, most of his peers have extensive offers and interests, and some have already committed (non-binding of course).

http://recruiting.scout.com/a.z?s=73&p=9&c=4&...

Either coaches are not looking past the competition, or, perhaps, they feel the kid is going to stay home.  Does look like someone worth keeping in the zip code.

Thought we were not going after 3 star type QBs.

Guess I should retract that, Duckworth is a 3 star guy.

On the flip side.  Do coaches/scouts give too much benefit to players that are on powerhouse teams?  Taking a look at OHIO recruit Duckworth's team, Louisville.  They finish 10-0 regular season without the projected starter at the helm.  Either an outstanding backup took over or the team is super or perhaps both.   Does this team success give a kid a boost where if he were on an average team his relative attractiveness suffers? (Louisville lost first playoff game to Aurora/Kent St recruit as QB would have faced OHIO had Duckworth been healthy)

I'd imagine that once Athens moves along in the playoffs and faces stiffer competition, much will be said about this young man.
