Another kid who we had on campus and for whatever reason finds success somewhere else. Pretty sure we couldve used this production last year in receiving and special teams. https://www.foxsports.com/college-football/spencer-schnel...

Wow...So what? As a Junior he scored 4 TD's at Illinois State? And you're lamenting that we let this one "get away"? Trying to find all the hidden gems who we let slip through our fingers is a waste of time. And regardless, I wouldn't even count Spencer Schnell among them. Why don't you find all the players we let get away who didn't end up starting for anyone. I'm sure they outnumber all the lost "big producers" like Schnell.

Just because he wasn't able to earn a scholarship in his short time at Ohio doesn't mean that he had no talent. The fact that he was able to go on to succeed at the FCS level is an indication of the health of Ohio's walkon program. Walkons are not just bodies. They are athletes who have the potential to succeed.

To wit, re walk-ons, I present exhibit A, or some other high letter, Bradd Ellis: perfect? Perhaps not. 2 pick sixes and 19 pbu's last year (3rd in the nation) is a tribute to Ellis and the Ohio walk-on program. Ellis was here at a time of need and he performed admirably.

Ever since Frank has been at Ohio, he's worked to build the walkon program, and attract better players. Knorr, and Grobe before him, always had walkon players that earned scholarships, too, so it didn't originate with Frank. Some people consider having a walkon succeed as a sign that they are choosing poorly who to offer in the first place, but that's not it. Some players are late bloomers. Some players just work harder at improving.

Some years injuries or nonfootball issues cause unforseen attrition. Late bloomers are out there every year. The most recognized high schoolers have often been redshirted in high school. These will have little upside. Every year there are youngsters, mabe 18 months younger than their "peers" who might have only started their senior years without honors from previous years who finally excell. There will have been no film on them. No recruiting service ratings. These youngsters have the upside. They are worth the wait.
