Saw this morning that the EWL and MAC will merge for wrestling.

Not many details yet.

But this is definitely a big step up for the MAC,when it comes to the quality of the conference.

Wow! This would mean that Bloomsburg, Clarion, Cleveland State, Edinboro, George Mason, Lock Haven, and Rider would join the ranks of Missouri, Old Dominion, Northern Illinois, Central Michigan, Kent State, Ohio, and Buffalo. I am guessing that this would be divided up into an East Division/West Division like the current format for both football and basketball.

I would think so too.

But,also think NCAA slots would be based on a conference tournament.
One question that has been raised is,starting out,if the combined conference will maintain the same total number of slots as each conference had before the merger.

Consensus in the wrestling community is that this has the potential to become
the third toughest conference behind the B1G and EIWA.

Good point; however, the NCAA tournament has at large bids decided on by committee, which also make up the thirty-three wrestlers chosen in each weight class. They also have pigtail matches, where losing wrestlers in the initial rounds of the tournament can win their way back into as high as third place in the tournament. Perhaps, I am being naive, but I really think that the NCAA, at least in wrestling, works really hard to get the best wrestlers in the country out on the mat come tournament time. I also think that the combined new league will greatly improve recruiting for all, including the Bobcats.

I agree about the NCAA trying to get the best wrestlers on the mat for the tournament.
It just seems a lot of the at large bids go to the B1G and EIWA.

Not that they aren't great wrestling conferences with strong strength of schedules, but it does seem that some other conferences get lost.

I also agree, the combined conference should be a big boost in recruiting.

I may also finally have a chance to see an O.U. dual, close to home.

The MAC put out their official announcement of the merger on Tuesday.

Pretty good article about it in The Post.

There's been a lot of talk out here about LIU joining a conference next season.

I don't know exactly how the rules work.
Apparently, by combining their Athletic Departments (LIU Brooklyn,LIU Post)and elevating an existing DII wrestling program,to D1 ,they don't have to go through the 4 year Transition Period to before joining a conference.

There were 2 schools of thought on which conference they would join.

One was they may be headed to the MAC,since that would create 2,8 team divisions.

The second was that, based on Geography they'd go to the EIWA.

Just saw a post that that they'll be in the EIWA.

Was kind of hoping for the MAC.

Would have meant another chance to see O.U. wrestle out here.

As an aside,it will be interesting to see how LIU's program develops.
Back when they were "C.W. Post " they were always a local power.

As an additional aside, the school was named after the inventor of Post cereal.
Their campus was Mr.Post's daughter's Long Island Estate.

According to several sources, Mizzouri will be leaving the MAC and returning
to the Big 12 for wrestling.

Official announcement is supposed to be this afternoon.

Its now official,Mizz. goes back to the Big12 for wrestling.

They really had no competition in the MAC.
9 Titles in 9 years.

The move is really good for their program.
But reduces, significantly the MAC's "relevance" in wrestling.

The only good thing is that it opens the MAC Championship up,

It makes complete sense in every way for Missouri when it became an option. Like you said, the MAC will be less competitive on a national level but gives the regular MAC schools a better chance of competing on the league level.

Missouri was clearly on another level and showed it on the mats. I am not sure that their move will diminish the league at all, but, instead, open up opportunities for a lot of other wrestlers and programs.

A good barometer for determining if the loss of Mizzouri "diminishes" the league will be if/how many automatic bids the MAC loses.
