I think they have something cookin with Foster... but this is where I think we can really get a edge on the rest of the MAC.
Go out there and get me a Maurice Ndour... Tommy Schmock. I wanna see someone HUNGRY at D2 who just needs a shot.
I'm not saying I wouldn't have offered Wiz... I'm just saying someone like Khalid Gates out of Slippery Rock might've been a better fit.
Kid was a JUCO All American - 15.6 points / 7.8 rebounds / 1 block
or Nordin Kapic, Freshman for LYNN College, 6'8" 240 from Vienna, Austria.
19.4 points / 10.3 rebounds / 2 assists
38% from 3
53% from FG
2 fouls per game
30+ minutes a night
Maurice Ndour claimed Christian promised him $50k to come to Ohio. With your vaunted BBIQ I figure you already knew that.

Trivia Question:
This is the 2nd transfer from Creighton that OHIO has landed.
Put on your memory caps as you'll have to go back to the deep recesses of your mind to pull this one up and tell us who was the first. (Excuse me if there had been others, I only know of one other) I asked a similar question when OHIO met Creighton in the round of 32. Deja vu all over again.
DAVE TEREK. From Mount Lebanon, PA, a 6-4 shooting guard. I was there when he arrived on campus, the year he had to sit out. I was gone by the time he averaged 8.8 points during the 1975-76 season.
That's when I got to meet him as well but also was here for his career as a Bobcat. He hit a mammoth pull up left handed jumper from what would have been beyond the NBA three line to either win it or send it to OT and eventual win vs the Redskins. OHIO didn't have much during those Coach Bandy years so a Convo victory vs the rival was a big deal!
You win FlashGary!

Same day, Creighton adds Utah State transfer guard Steven Ashworth. Here is a quote a don't remember ever seeing about a college player...

Is this a revelation to you, Jeff? I’ve been aware for a long time that the BBIQ on here is so good that if our top guys were given the reigns of the OHIO men’s team we’d be making the Final Four on a regular basis. It’s sort of like listening to a seminar discussion between Jim Naismith, Johnny Wooden, Jim Snyder, Cam Henderson, Mike Krzyzewski, Bobby Knight and Phog Allen, D.O. Just sit back and be enlightened.

And the coaches at these schools as well:
In an article on him committing to Louisville: "The No. 132 prospect in America according to 247 Sports. Wiznitzer also had offers from LSU, Kansas State, Clemson, DePaul, Iowa, Ohio State, West Virginia, Georgia Tech and Iona, among others."

It's amazing to me how much people have gotten into The Wiz. I think this was a case where people thought he'd come in and average a double-double. Dude was playing his first real college minutes this year and Boals still has time to develop him. He will be just fine. Will he ever be a dominating center? Probably not. But he's definitely salvagable for 10 to 15 minutes per game. I think by the time he graduates he can be an 8 and 5 or 8 and 6 kind of guy. I'm ok with that.

Agree with this. He's not going to be a DW3 but he can play good minutes if needed. Yes he was rough to start the year but the dude only played 41 minutes combined in two years at Louisville, which can lead to some rust. I saw the guy completely lock down Freeman and frustrate the hell out of him - I'm remaining hopeful that this year is a pass and with a summer of work he will be just fine next year.

Three minor improvements and the young man will be a productive Bobcat. Run the scoring through Hunter, AJ Brown and James by slashing and popping mid range jumpers and threes. Have Clayton hang out in a corner. Wiznitzer SELDOM setting screens. Like Kansas State, once the guards break down the defense than Wiznitzer moves towards the basket from the backside if/when his man goes to help defense. And result in an O rebound or a Slam. No passing to him other than this quasi- alley oop. He is a pretty good free throw shooter. He then plays high energy defense and knocks the crap out of the opponent with his 4-5 fouls ala Rick Mahorn or Bill Laimbeer and not by setting moving screens.
Oh and for icing, he picks one spot above the key where, like a free throw, he chucks up occasional threes when he is wide open! (Wishful thinking of course)

I would love nothing more for these numbers to become reality, but I don’t see it happening. If it does, I will come back on here and eat my words and admit I was wrong about The Whiz. I truly hope I’m wrong and this dude surprises us all.
As I’ve said numerous times. Find him a big man camp this summer and let’s start with the basics…learning how to set a legal screen. Baby steps.

I'd love to see it. Nothing makes me happier from a personnel perspective than seeing a kid grow and develop into a stronger player. In this transfer portal era, programs like ours will need to do that to keep continuity. Boals doesn't have proven track record of doing this either (maybe except for Miles Brown?).
But...
The dude was lost on the court for most of the season. The rare times when he'd play with some gusto, he'd make a big mistake. Otherwise, he was the most timid player on the floor. I've never seen a coach more demonstrative towards their own player during a game than Boals was towards Gabe.
He never strung 2 decent games together and actually regressed as the season went on.
https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/gabe-wiznitz...
In Jan-Mar he had 51 fouls, 56 rebounds, and 37 FG attempts.
As my grandmother would say, woof.

+1. Would love to see it, but I’ll let myself be pleasantly surprised. There’s a reason bigs are a priority this portal season. Part of that has to do with how far behind Gabe is development wise.

How about that member of the LA Clippers squad?
Dwight Wilson didn't get better?

Agree with this. He's not going to be a DW3 but he can play good minutes if needed. Yes he was rough to start the year but the dude only played 41 minutes combined in two years at Louisville, which can lead to some rust. I saw the guy completely lock down Freeman and frustrate the hell out of him - I'm remaining hopeful that this year is a pass and with a summer of work he will be just fine next year.

In Jan-Mar he had 51 fouls, 56 rebounds, and 37 FG attempts.
As my grandmother would say, woof.
Exactly, I'm confused where the improvement came? I saw the same player in March as I saw in November, very tall but not very coordinated.
The improvement of other players had one thing in common, athleticism. Somebody please point to one skill that Wiz can build on? Being tall? Setting picks? Catching the ball? Not fouling?
Woof is right.

The Wiz is underappreciated
It's amazing to me how much people have gotten into The Wiz. I think this was a case where people thought he'd come in and average a double-double. Dude was playing his first real college minutes this year and Boals still has time to develop him. He will be just fine. Will he ever be a dominating center? Probably not. But he's definitely salvagable for 10 to 15 minutes per game. I think by the time he graduates he can be an 8 and 5 or 8 and 6 kind of guy. I'm ok with that.

Not sure what others have seen that believe he'll take some quantum leap from this year to the next. The Whiz is 7-foot and had 7 blocks in 32 games. At that size, you can accidentally block 20 shots at the rim. In relation, AJ Clayton had 21 blocks in 32 games. Somebody please tell me one thing he does effectively? Yes, he had that one magical night against Freeman. Anything else from November to March?
Again, it's a big mistake if Boals and the program don't spend the money and have The Whiz at a big man camp this summer.

Lars Thiemann to Loyola Marymount. That's one I really would have liked.
Guessing he didn’t want to leave Cali. I’m actually really intrigued by TJ Nesmith of Lenior-Rhyne (D2). I know it’s a level below; but, he’s physical/athletic on both ends of the court (found some highlights). His 36 blocks last year were more than our bigs combined (34). Whether it’s him or someone else, would love to add this type of player profile.

I'm not saying I wouldn't have offered Wiz... I'm just saying someone like Khalid Gates out of Slippery Rock might've been a better fit.
MDWST....your hoops IQ is one of the best on this board. No way you would have offered The Whiz...no way.
So, you are implying that MDWST and you have higher basketball IQs than the Ohio basketball staff?
The staff basketball IQ is still better combined than me and MDWST...haha. However, give MDWST and me 15 minutes with The Whiz, and I bet we can show him how to set a screen without always moving his feet and getting called for a foul.

The fact that Clayton has more blocks than him is kind of mind boggling. While I'm not going to go out and say he absolutely sucks and we should kick him to the curb, I will say it was cringe inducing to watch him at times. Again, he played only 100 minutes COMBINED in two years at Louisville and we immediately transitioned him to an every game player. Also probably new offensive system to learn. But, I will say he would force passes and make ill advised screens / decisions which screwed us over. I really hope we can find a way to salvage him, but if it comes to the point we can't, we have to move on from him.
