Miami's administrators are on crack. First of all, they don't have the money. We all know that, high from sniffing their own parts, they love to pretend that all of their alumni are billionaires, but riddle me this...why is their endowment about the same as Ohio's, less than half of UC and a fraction of OSU? Their AD is just another broke G6 AD running on student subsidies. Where are they coming up with 40M to join and another 10 to 20 every year to up their budget. This is just another example of that school pretending for the public that they're something that they clearly are not.
This is what I see foresee. You're basically spending a ton more money to take in marginally more on tv revenue and even if you did have an increase in attendance (you won't, btw) that would be eaten away by travel expenses. Ask Tim Albin how great the jump is to that conference...
Apparently the CEO of Starbucks and Sean McVay (Rams HC) met this summer to discuss Miami Athletics. They certainly seem to have the want to move, regardless if it makes sense in this P4-heavy world.

Meh. An NFL coach doesn't have the kind of wealth to fund this move. The Starbucks CEO does. He, however, is also the guy who just doubled the health insurance premiums of hourly workers while he commutes to work from LA to Seattle in a private jet, so he's headed to the guillotine pretty soon.

In all seriousness, I'm torn. Half of me wants the AAC to slap Of Ohio back down to their place in the pecking order and give their alumni a harsh reality check. Half of me wants to see them bankrupt themselves in a move of epic failure, thus giving their alumni a harsh reality check.

I'm a bit surprised Miami didn't reach out to Ohio in their exploration. Much like the Brooklyn Dodgers & NY Giants, it makes a lot of sense for strong regional rivals to tie themselves together.

That said I have no interest in the American conference.

While the American Conference wouldn't bring true excitement, I think a change is almost necessary if we want any relevance. We aren't going anywhere in the MAC. That much feels obvious. At this point, I'm a fan of whatever change may occur. The MAC is such a deadend conference with no direction that I'd love to see an attempt to go elsewhere. The MAC audience already knows us. This would open us up to a new audience. And I'd much rather be one of the first to jump instead of be on the ship that everyone else is abandoning.

Wonder if this report about Miami contacting the AAC is accurate? UConn was part of the story and now they have come out and denied it.

There was a recent recent report about Ohio contacting the Sun Belt that we denied.

Well, I will throw out another question… Does Ohio University have $40 million to put into football? If so, who or where is it coming from?
They don't.
Not yet! Wait until SBH and his high-rolling buddies start to release funds from their Swiss bank accounts.

I just can't get on board with this narrative. Why are we a deadend conference while the American is not? We are what we've always been (ignoring the weird Sac St thing)...why is that a bad thing? What direction are you looking for? What new audience would the American open up to us? Are you saying Florida Atlantic and Rice fans would follow Ohio more than Miami & Toledo fans do? I can't understand why anyone would think that.

Love the BG trolling, but also wonder if the report is false as many of this conference realignment things end up being.

It is not a false report. Have heard Miami AD and football/basketball coaches speak and they all talk about joining the ACC when Clemson/Florida State leave. Not the American, the ACC. I'm sure the American would be the first step. It sounds like the American is not interested however.

They are getting snubbed by the American and still think they will land in the ACC? Seriously?

Silly fiami. Delusional much.

Besides, it's UNC to the SEC and Virginia to the Big10 on the horizon. Maybe.

And I'll be the first to say this: With JMU now out of the Sun Belt, that leaves a spot open. A certain team wearing Green and White would make a good fit.

Opportunity knocks.

Honestly, JMU is one of the schools that would make joining the Sun Belt be attractive to me. Marshall and App State still there though.

As much as I would like to dunk on Miami for not being the selection I have a sneaking suspicion that they are likely next and that it could happen soon. We are in a critical time for the MAC, with a clear tier structure in terms of donor support and institutional health (enrollment, funds, etc) with Miami having to be at the top of that list given the sudden wave of funds. In realignment cycles things tend to be really slow moving but once the first domino falls things happen and happen quickly. If the next domino is Miami, the following would also be looking to move:
- Toledo
- UMass (despite their lack of success they have real resources and a clear desire to be good)
- WMU
- Buffalo (one of few schools who has kept enrollment up and is in a true city)
- Ohio

My doomsday scenarios would be:
- Take the place of JMU in the SunBelt. The Sunbelt east is App State, Coastal, ODU, Marshall, Ga State, Ga Southern. Even without JMU that isn't a bad place to be.
- Join forces with the other MAC schools listed above to try to create an east division of the Mountain West with NIU.
- Those are really the only 2 options I can see, unless we suddenly find $40M to try to make a run at the AAC but the AAC honestly feels out of reach.

If this were purely a talent and results move... then no.

You get a collective of Starbucks, Sean McVay, John Harbaugh, Big Ben, Wally, Ron Harper... people start listening.

This is an SMU to the ACC move. Deep pockets over sustained results. Starbucks Guy can dump a sack full of a cash down and make people say no. Considering teams like FSU are literally paying coaches $70M just to go away, I don't think even his money can help them fish in the same pond, but crazier things have happened. They've got enough credible voices to make the calls.

Is the ACC going to be happy with a team that draws like 15K a game being in the conference?

Maybe they could try to fill the stands like the Las Vegas Raiders or the LA NFL teams. 80% away fans. Lord knows those southern fan bases would love to visit Oxford in November.

I don't mean to stereotype the whole school, but...

These are generally the kinda people and alumni who would probably show up if they had a higher level of conference prestige. They have an incredibly high opinion of themselves, I can see a complete 180.

In past years, I had always thought that any conference reshuffle would involve Ohio and Miami (and maybe Toledo and/or WMU) moving together. Now it appears it's every dog for himself. The MAC appears to be a sinking ship with everyone scrambling for a lifeboat.

I don't agree with this characterization. The one report of us talking to SBC was denied and I haven't seen any credible evidence on it. NIU was a good riddance situation as they weren't a core/legacy part of the MAC. Haven't heard of anyone other than Miami "scrambling." If anything, we are the most stable conference around.

I hear what you're saying but I just don't think they could pull a 180 and sustain it. They may get a couple bigger crowds but I really don't think any bump in attendance in any sport is sustainable for them. I also don't think they would win as much so then the consumer has to decide to buy tickets for a team with a losing record, we know how big of a bandwagon their fans are after watching this past basketball season unfold.
