Thanks for reminding me how much fun it was to watch Grobes teams. Win or lose they always played hard. And, that was a time when guys stayed for four years!

In Grobe's first season - 2-8-1 - you could see that team was playing with iron resolve and visceral spirit.

Soft play calling by Izzy
is he calling plays? isn't this kind of shit why he was bypassed by Brian Smith?
Yup. Brian new how to call plays. Izzy tends to get lost in play calling.
The late game short yardage play calls were terrible.

Predictable and no imagination or balls.

In 1994, Ohio went 0-11. Grobe arrived and started freshman Kareem Wilson at QB. Bad passer but good handler and excellent runner. First season - 1995 - Ohio went 2-8-1. Then 6-6 with road wins at Hawaii and Maryland. Third season 8-3. Fourth season 5-6.
The only thing that people that don't remember need to know about Wilson is that he wore a full set of shoulder pads. Army has done this a few times in recent years but for about a quarter century Ohio was the last team to not attempt a foward pass in a game which is surely the largest gap in history. We ran for over 600 yards in a game against EMU if I recall.

In Knorr's first season he - or his offensive coordinator - decided to start Jackson, not with his accustomed option offense but as a pro-type QB. Disaster. I felt sorry for Dontrell.
We had won 8 games the prior year and returned, I think, 21 of 22 starters. We hired within for continuity. By the end of the year Jackson was playing WR. It seemed inexplicable at the time. I have learned over years on this board that our AD basically forced staff members onto Knorr. If that's the case, I don't just feel sorry for Jackson, but everyone on the team, and even Knorr himself.

Home from Kent.

Observations.

The coeds dress really racy.

Great crowd; lousy bathrooms are at far ends of the field!

OHIO lousy; Kent lousier. Lose by only three when they have a punt blocked, a field goal blocked, one missed. And OHIO QB skillfully grabs a snap he had no idea was coming!

Poulas needs to play; neither OHIO QB's ready for primetime

Tackling seemed okay.

Some really good hits by both team tacklers.

Punt the ball.

OHIO running backs seem slow.

I'd have Levi in as a receiver out of the backfield ala Papi White when he is not playing QB.

We sat behind Kent's bench. I have never seen a less athletic bunch of players in my days (other than their starters) OHO at least looks like they field players.

Did the coach make the stooge who jumped offsides on 4th and short run home to Athens from at least Coolville?

I was at that EMU game in Ypsi. At one point we had a third and 26...and converted with an option run.

I remember one year in the Grobe Era we lead the nation in the category of fewest passes attempted in a season.
