Protecting them from excess demands from coaches is a benefit to the kids. Sure, I could see the NCAA saying "OK, it's a quid pro quo. If the kids are going to be paid, they no longer deserve protection. From now on, they are going to have to put up with more texts, and they are going to have to work out in front of coaches as often as the coaches want", but they haven't.
