One of the aspects that is beyond my understanding in giving Tim Albin such a long-term, lucrative contract to coach our football team is whoever made this decision had to know--suspect?--that Coach Boals has the basketball team on such an rise that we'll probably need a few dollars to keep him from bolting for alleged greener pastures sooner than later. Unless the decision already has been made that we won't (can't?) match a big money offer. Hope not!!!

We can't and we shouldn't. We don't have the money, nor is the potential there in the future. That's the dangerous thinking that gets a lot of schools in trouble financially. "If we only just pay the head coach more money, the wins come in and we jump to the next level and the money will follow." If you want it, get out your checkbook.

I disagree with your premise that Coach Albin’s contract is “long-term”. The university only committed two years to him financially. If at the end of next season the university decides to let him go, no more money is due to him. So, although on paper it’s a four-year contract, where it matters most ($$$) it’s only a two-year contract.

I understand on the money if it's huge, giacomo. But there could be a middle ground the first time around, like there was with Larry Hunter. Maybe coach Boals would take less to stay and see how far he can take us--he has an on-paper outstanding recruiting class coming in with the ability to add to it--than go and try to revive a floundering Power 5 school.
What I disagree with is that we can't go to the next level. There have been several MAC teams that could have gone to the next level if the coach had stayed. Hey, what about us after we went to the Sweet 16 with the entire D.J. Cooper team staying intact for one more year AND Caris LeVert, the MVP of the Ohio State high school hoops tournament, joining that group--until John Groce left. We'll never know what that team could have done and how coach Groce could have built upon it. I realize it's looking back in retrospect, but how did the move to Illinois work out?

A lot of “what if’s”. That kind of dreaming is what gets you in trouble. Someone had a big dream in the late 60’s and built the Convo. Arguably the nicest arena in the state of Ohio, and maybe all of its borders. We were playing a big time schedule. Why didn’t we turn the corner at some point? A lot has to do with our metro area. If at least we were filling the stands as the only game in town, that might encourage me to go for it. But I think not.

The premise is deeply flawed. Just ask Buffalo. They did everything possible to keep Nate Oates, paying him an astounding (for the MAC) base of $837,000. Oates and his wife loved Buffalo. When Alabama came calling with $2.46 million a year, guess what happened! Ditto for PJ Fleck and Western, who was the highest paid MAC football coach at $800,000 when Minnesota came and got him. He’s currently at the midpoint of B1G coaches at over $4.4 million.
If Boals makes another run or has a couple more 20+ win seasons with huge recruiting classes, a suitor will come calling and doubling or tripling his salary with money we don’t have won’t stop him from leaving. The crappiest P5 program in the country can still double anything Ohio can give Boals — and do it without going deeper in the red as an athletic department, which is what any MAC school has to do for any coaching salary..

Its two different subjects entirely. Boals should be extended and with a raise if he wins the MAC again, or even comes close with a 24-25 win season.
Firing Albin after this year and paying for him in 2022 seems to be a waste of money when there is a few position coaches to fill for next season. Albin didn't have to fire his defensive coordinator but he's getting a new one. Its fair to see what he can do with a full year as HC.
If he has a winning season in 2022 Albin will probably be able to ride out his contract. You can make the argument this program should strive for better but in the short term it might be smarter going with the Frank legacy pick. In 3-5 years the expanded playoff is coming which could be a catalyst for a change.

One thing I will add is the larger the salary, the larger the buyout. Due to this I could see Boals making Oates money in an extension. Will it work long term if Boals continues to win in the NCAAs?
In my estimation if you can get a coach to hang around 8 years for an extension and raise you had yourself a long term coach.

The only programs that can sustain it at the top over the longer haul are bluebloods in basketball and football. Smaller P5 programs have the same problem competing.
Solich sustained 7-8 wins a year for over a decade but never really had that one big MAC year with 12 wins. Most on here were frustrated about it but it was realistic success. Basketball had a 5 year period from Groce's second season to JC's final year where it averaged 24-25 wins a year counting postseason. A couple tournament runs but not in the dance every year during that stretch. I consider it to be fairly high level to have won in the NCAAs the last 3 appearance and winning the last 3 bowl games.

Yet you want players to be paid. They ain’t getting paid if the program doesn’t rise.

I think players should be paid at P5 schools where coaches are being paid 10M a year. Look at what James Franklin at Penn State just signed for. We are in a different situation. The NIL deal works for us and the MAC. OSU and Alabama? Nah.
