Block's sharp shooting helps Bobcats roll past Herd

Ohio breaks out of shooting slump in 101-84 victory

ATHENS – Jason Carter scored 25 points for the second time in three games, and Ohio won its third straight game with a runaway 101-84 victory against rival Marshall on Saturday at The Convo.

Carter added 12 rebounds for the Bobcats (5-2). Gavin Block and Ben Vander Plas each had 18 points off the bench, while Teyvion Kirk finished with 17 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Ohio led 48-31 at halftime, and Marshall got only as close as 11 points in the second half. Jon Elmore had 26 points and C.J. Burks 22 for the Thundering Herd (5-2).

Led by Block, the Bobcats had their best shooting game of the season from beyond the arc, going 9 of 17 (52.9 percent) and finished at 51.4 percent overall while also going 20 of 28 (71.4 percent) at the foul line. Block was 6 of 7 from long range.

Marshall’s only lead was at the start when Elmore opened scoring with a 3-pointer. Ohio took the lead for good on a Carter 3-pointer that made it 10-7 and began an 8-0 run. After a Jarrod West 3-pointer for Marshall, Ohio scored another eight straight to go up 23-12, capped by a Block triple.

After the Thundering Herd cut their deficit to five, the Bobcats came back to score 10 in a row, including six by Carter during that span, taking a 36-21 lead when Carter scored following an offensive rebound. Vander Plas scored a layup just before the buzzer to put Ohio in front 48-31 at the break.

Antonio Cowart Jr. scored on a Carter assist to push the Bobcats’ advantage to 55-34, but Marshall battled back to within 11 at 63-52 on a Jannson Williams 3-pointer with 12:33 remaining.

Doug Taylor scored on a putback, and after two Darius George free throws, Block connected on back-to-back 3-pointers to put Ohio back up by 17 points. Carter later had a three-point play that started an 8-0 run that helped ice the game.

Ohio’s biggest lead was 95-70 with 2:27 remaining on a Vander Plas layup. With Ohio going to its bench, Marshall cut the lead in the closing minutes to 95-82 and fouled a couple of times to try to extend the game. After four free throws for the Bobcats, a Jarrell Reaves dunk on a leakout punctuated the win with six seconds remaining.

The Bobcats travel to face Xavier at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
