ATHENS – Ohio scored an NCAA Division I record 40 straight points and blew out Cleveland State 101-46 on Sunday afternoon at The Convo.

Already leading 46-25 near the end of the first half, the Bobcats scored five more points before the break and then scored the first 35 points of the second half to go up 86-25 before the Vikings ended a nearly 10-minute scoreless stretch.

The previous record scoring run was 39 straight points by Oklahoma against Weber State on Dec. 22, 2014.

Ohio’s run Sunday began with a Ben Vander Plas 3-pointer with 1:03 left in the first half and concluded with a Miles Brown layup with 8:54 remaining in the second half. A free throw by Chris Green at the 8:03 mark finally snapped the run.

“I thought we got off to a great start, the first couple wars of the game,” Ohio coach Jeff Boals said. “Even at halftime we talked about being a mature team, being a disciplined team. We wrote zero zero on the board at halftime. Even though we were up 26, we're just really proud of the way our guys came out and extended that lead. Even when you get as big of a lead that we got, sometimes the second, third guys come in and it can get a little sloppy. I thought our guys did a great job of really trying to execute and do what we do. I'm just proud of them."

Lunden McDay led Ohio with a career-high 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while Dwight Wilson III posted a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds in only 19 minutes and also went 7 of 10 from the field. Jason Preston had a typical near triple-double performance with 12 points, eight assists and seven rebounds in 24 minutes, and Vander Plas had 10 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Ohio (3-1) shot 59.3% from the field and got to the foul line often, going 24 of 37 (64.9%). Cleveland State (0-2) went just 13 of 57 (22.8%) from the field, including 3 of 23 from long range and committed 20 turnovers.

During Ohio’s record-breaking run, the Vikings missed 15 straight field goal tries and two free throws with 12 turnovers. Their missed field streak reached 17 and did not end until there was 5:10 remaining. They made just 3 of 25 attempts in the second half, going 0 for 12 from long range.

The Bobcats already were in firm control before their historic performance that began late in the first half. Wilson put them up on a dunk 14 seconds in and they never trailed. Ohio went up 10-3 on a Vander Plas dunk, and after Cleveland State got to within 12-9, the Bobcats scored 16 consecutive points for a 28-9 advantage.

No one for the Vikings reached double figures. Deante Johnson and Jayson Woodrich scored seven points each to lead the way.

Junior college transfer Rifen Miguel had his best game for Ohio with nine points – seven of them at the foul line – in nine minutes and freshman Mark Sears had nine points in 16 minutes.

Ben Roderick played only the first three minutes of the game and did not return.

Ohio had a 50-24 advantage on the boards, including 14-10 on the offensive end despite Cleveland State having far more of those opportunities with more misses. The Vikings had 20 turnovers, while the Bobcats had 18.

The Bobcats go back on the road to face Marshall at 2 p.m. Sunday.
