And before it was in Long Island, it was in Cleveland.

Lol. Probably seen them 10 or so times. First time I saw them was at the Blue Gator in spring 2008. Saw Andrew WK on the South Green lawn the same night.

There happens to be a young head coach at UNC Asheville.

https://uncabulldogs.com/coaches.aspx?rc=326&path=mbball

They had a poor record this year, but they also had "the youngest team in Div I"

Mike Morrell was a long time assistant under Shaka Smart and is known for his recruiting abilities.

This flight is probably unrelated to the coaching search, but you never know.

Maybe it will be Boals, even though there is "bad blood" between JS and JB, according to some of the sleuth here on BA. Perhaps, they've buried the hatchet. Or, someone above JS is calling the shots. I doubt the latter, though.

Found this little nugget from press release announcing his hiring at UNC-Ash, last April:

Named the top recruiter in the country under the age of 35 in 2015 by ESPN, Morrell has helped coach a team to the NCAA Tournament in nine of his 11 years at the NCAA Division I level.

So, speculating on posted flight records, we could guess that Schaus spent some time in Cleveland taking in our fantastic women's team on Friday and Saturday. Upon championship game loss, he immediately flew to Long Island to meet with either Boals or Geno.

Sunday's flight to Asheville, the second flight to Asheville within 5 days, could quite possibly be to meet (or pick up) Coach Morrell.

If, (IF!) any/some of above is close to truth, guessing we will have news very soon.

First, tracking the flights out of the OU airport is probably my favorite part of the coaching search process. The speculation is fun and absurd at the same time, so thank you to the folks that post this. Second,Hiring a 4-27 coach would be total madness. Third, the Big South tournament was in Ashville. Bob Richey at Furman wouldnt be a bad candidate.

Finally got a good answer on why Asheville. Edit: Just checked, the Southern Conference tourney was in Ashville, but it ended March 11. So not sure about the timing on those flights. Furman is 64 Miles away, but why not fly into Greenville if it’s the Furman Guy.

I’m with you on a 4-27 guy. That’s not going to cut it with the fans.

I absolutely love this thread.

Bring Boals home or get Ryan Pedon. I'd be happy with either one.

Many people on here think Chris Jans is a crazy idea suggested by BLove. Doesn't look so crazy now. Sometimes you have to give people a second chance if you truly believe that person can lead your program to something much better.

Not sure if I want Morrell. Considering being connected to Shaka right now is not good in terms of the FBI.....Will Wade is a prime example of this along with Shaka himself eventually getting tied in. Sorry, you don't happen to get a kid out of Cincinnati, OH to go to Texas for just a year who's track record of developing bigs is like my ability to identify the best type of tomato.....

I think we are going to see either Geno and or Dustin back in the Convo next year.

The plane is supposed to leave again for Long Island tomorrow at 6am.

Guessing it's Boals and we get an announcement tomorrow.

Bringing a Bobcat home! Jans would have been fun, but I'll sign back up for this ride!

If true, it's the safe choice for Schaus.

Maybe he's feeling the heat.

If those flights are going to pick him up to Athens yesterday and then bringing him back tomorrow then it is a pretty reasonable assumption that Boals is in Athens discussing the details of a contract. It means that Boals wants the job and the AD wants Boals. Its just a matter of money.

Unlike any other flight speculation we can be nearly 100% sure that the fights from a few minutes away from Ohio to a few minutes from Stony Brook are related to Jeff Boals.

My guess would be this went down as follows:

1. Bobcat Women lose in Cleveland on Saturday.
2. Immediately after, Schaus flies from Cleveland to Long Island to meet Boals.
3. They meet for an hour. Boals does the job in cementing Schaus's opinion that he is "The Guy" for the job.
4. Schaus flies back to Athens late Saturday afternoon and meets with Nellis. Nellis signs off on Boals. (Nellis is late to the meeting because he has no idea what day of the week it is)
5. Late Saturday, job offers are exchanged. They negotiate over the phone with the agents and agree in the wee hours. Boals is the new Ohio Coach.
6. They agree on a Monday press conference as the plane is in use for University business on Sunday and the lede will get buried on Selection Sunday.
7. Monday morning, the plane goes to pick Boals up and bring him back for a 2pm or 3pm Presser. Open ended flight log with return flight TBD as there are media and donor obligations to be discussed on Richland.

Let's see. I'll be taking over the Messenger beat in the fall.

I'm with Fear Leon. This is great stuff! It's hard not be excited for the native Son to come home. It's the era of Social Media so everyone will have their outlets to whine on the decision either way.

I'm for Boals so label me away! Bring Geno with you!

Good work. What year did you graduate from the J-school?
