At least someone is doing something. The MAC needs to listen.

Won't matter for the Bobcats until a new coaching staff arrives and ups the recruiting to what Buffalo is doing. Or better.

You want a relevant mid-major hoops program? Won't happen recruiting scrubs.

So, where did Ellis Dozier end up?

This is very interesting. Does anybody know if the MAC hierarchy has considered doing something along these lines. The comment suggesting that it won’t help us because of our deficiencies in recruiting notwithstanding, anything that boosts the chances of a league team getting a higher seed with its improved odds of a win or 2 would help all the teams in the league.

There is a part of the article which mentions giving the top teams of these extra conference games double byes in the conference tournament, which the MAC did for a while. I like the idea of them having to earn that. It is important to note that's it not about improving the league as a whole per se, but improving the chances you get a higher seed for your conference champ, which in turn makes it more likely for you to win a tournament game.

I'm skeptical the MAC would ever support something like this as long as we have schools like Eastern Michigan scheduling as many D-3 and NAIA teams as possible to hold back schools interested in competing at this level.

At least now that our 2012 Sweet 16 run is 6 years out everyone can sleep easy in knowing extra NCAA $ gained from those units won't be going into the pockets of the leaches in Ypsilanti

I've seen crazier things happen.

You mean the same Eastern Michigan that has won the Reese Trophy 3 times and has been runner up six times since we last won it?

The very same EMU that just cut 4 sports programs and is currently under investigation by the Feds.

Honestly the Reese trophy means absolutely nothing. They may have a really good golf and track team, doesn't matter. Football and Basketball are all that matters. And they are averaging about 1,000 fans a game.

You mean the same Reese Trophy won by dominance in non-revenue sports? How are they funding these sports?

By punting funding in football and riding $ allotments off units Ohio (and now Buffalo) won in the NCAA tournament. ESPN didn't give the MAC a big $ TV deal to watch EMU Basketball play the 2-3 Zone against D-3 and NAIA competition. Yes, EMU more than any other team in the MAC regularly schedules the bare minimum D-1 games in basketball that allows them to share in the MAC's revenue. If they want to play so many home games against lower division opponents, maybe they should stop bribing Pepsi to buy up tickets to their football game. Yes, that's a perfectly legal loophole to meet the NCAA's attendance requirements, but you have to question the ethics of using revenue generated by other schools to fund your non-revenue sports programs.

Ethical concerns aside, their leaders deserve credit for contributing the absolute bare-minimum. It's good for their student body. Nevermind the other student bodies around the MAC. It's on leadership around the MAC to raise the standards and demand accountability. We are well past the point where EMU needs to start contributing their fair share.

The same way all sports are funded - student fees.

As mentioned this only helps the best teams at the end of the season, but I’d love to know the plan for improving non-con scheduling opportunities for mids. That’s where the real injustice is that he’s referencing.

14 to an 11 seems like a stretch with just this format, but to counter the “recruiting” argument I’d venture that if seed improves and upsets increase, recruitment is automatically improved.

(Not to mention if one and done gets modified. Love to see some research on how that has changed any balance or parity.)
