Remembering Coach Hunters greatest Victories at Ohio

In reflecting on Coach Hunter’s time at Ohio I was trying to remember all the great wins and upsets his teams pulled off. I will list a couple of my favorites and would be interested in every one else’s.

My favorite of all time was beating Ohio State in St. John arena in front of thousands of Bobcat fans. I remember a columnist for the Columbus Dispatch writing it may have been the first time ever that Ohio State fans were out numbered by visiting fans. What an atmosphere! While it wasn’t an upset it was still very sweet.

I would say #2 was the very next game going into Charlottesville and beating the eventual ACC Co-Champions Virginia Cavaliers to advance to NYC and Madison Square Garden!

Looking back through some archives there was a 103-72 blowout win vs Xavier (1995) and a win over UConn in 1993. That Ohio team had a 13 game win streak at one point. There was a road win at Stanford in 1992. A couple of nail-biting near misses at Rupp.

Another for the list is an upset win over Syracuse in the first game of the Carrier Classic. I think that may have been LaDrell Whitehead's first game after his transfer. Ohio was never invited back there and Bob Haldeman says Boeheim still might be angry about that one.

By far the UCONN game...beating Donyell and Donny Marshal in Hawaiil. I believe Boals got Donny Marshall ejected.

One of the most heartbreaking losses was to Kansas State during Trent's freshman year. We had that one and that game helped get Larry a contract offer from K-State that he turned down. It was also the first time where you realized that Larry was building something special with Trent's freshman class. Also, crazy to think that in Trent's freshman year...they lost 5 of their first 6 games. Finished 13-8 rest of a year with a crushing buzzer beating loss to Sam Brown and UT in MAC quarterfinals.

Let’s not forget all the victories over WVU! I think Ohio beat the Mountaineers 3 times in that 5 game series.

For me it was the Preseason NIT Final at the Garden.

First time I ever saw O.U. in my neighborhood.

The atmosphere,the 110,overtime win.

Just a great night.

Beating Miami in the 1994 MAC Title game at Battelle Hall in Columbus.

Victory over the Evil Empire in Cowtown in the Preseason NIT. I was present in person for that one and sat next to OHIO journalism professor extraordinaire, Norm Dohn. Some of Larry's other big victories on the road I was only watching on TV, or more often listening to on the radio. The one in that category that I remember best was the UConn victory.

My favorite moments had to be the first three days of the preseason NIT for sure. Many of his biggest victories I wasn't able to be present for, but going up to columbus and taking over St. Johns, even though osu sucked that year, was amazing. I'm a little sad the score wasn't all that impressive, but once we took over the game in the first half we were never really threatened.

Then two days Later going to Virginia and winning... I wasn't there, but we were on National TV when it wasn't a common thing, it was Friday night and lots of people were watching us dismantle nationally ranked VA on their floor... up 20 in the second half, then we almost blew it, but hung on to win. That win got us into the top 25. I remember watching from Lakeview apts and having a bunch of people over and the firecrackers and screaming from all the Balconies when it was over. Great night.

Following the Bobcats as they won the preseason NIT, while taking a road trip though out Northern, California. During the Championship game of that tournament,I swayed a whole bar full of loggers in Eureka to cheer on the 'Cats. There were already rumors at that time that the Portland Trailblazers had their eyes on Gary Trent, and they all seemed to like what they saw. Of course, it was next to impossible not to be won over by the gusty Geno Ford as well.

One of my favorite games, though not a win, is when the Bobcats came to Pauley Pavilion, the Mecca of NCAA Championship basketball, and nearly upset the UCLA Bruins on their own home court. Us visiting Bobcat fans were relegated to a small section way up in the rafters, but we were so collectively loud and pumped that we drowned out the entire arena. This is partly because the UCLA fans were nervously shocked into silence. At one point, one of the Bobcats, who stood at mid court, pointed up toward us, and we all went absolutely crazy.

One of the things that I always liked about a Hunter coached team is that the Bobcats always seemed to be physically, mentally, and emotionally tough, and that, even in a loss, you always felt as though we would psychologically break down and intimidate the other team. The Bobcats during that time seemed to be feared by Major schools, who knew that playing us was a risky venture at best.

UConn got up to a No. 2 ranking for a period of time that season, and we had given the Huskies their only loss to that point. That was really impressive.

One other notable near-miss: the first game after the Preseason NIT triumph, which was a roadie at Kentucky. We were ranked 14th, I believe UK was No. 3, and we cut their lead to a point with a minute or two to play. If we had won that game, we'd probably have been a top 10 team (at least for a week or so). Of course, that was one of about four of five near-upsets our boys have had against UK.

One of my personal favorite Bobcat road wins was under Hahn.

Mon, Dec 21, 1987 win over Tennessee in Knoxville that caused their best player Dyron Nix (averaged 22ppg that season) to melt down after the game and trash his coach Don DeVoe in the post-game.

Dysfunction in Vols-land in any sport always makes a fun soap opera to see.
